Would you buy a second hand mattress?

The mattress company we’re looking at ordering from are selling some mattresses at a discount. They make it clear they are the ones that have been returned in the 100 day trial period. Apparently they are then inspected, deep cleaned and given a new cover before being relisted for sale at a discount. They’re £200-300 cheaper, so it’s quite the saving.

Would you see issue in this or not? I’m thinking it’s only like staying at a hotel. DH is more of the mind you can’t put a price on a decent quality mattress and we should buy our own from brand new, even if it means paying more.

YABU - no way would I buy one someone else had potentially slept on for a month or two
YANBU - I would totally buy one! Don’t see the problem at all, it’s a bargain

Yes. Think hotels

Perfectlystill · 24/07/2024 23:40

Absolutely not.

Sparrowball · 24/07/2024 23:43

I wouldn't, but I can't give a logical reason to explain why I'll happily stay in a hotel!

MissingKitty · 24/07/2024 23:46

It’s been deep cleaned so maybe 🤷‍♀️ but a mattress is an important purchase so if one person isn’t happy with used I’d buy new.

JC03745 · 24/07/2024 23:46

I want to know if their deep clean included removal of every, single moth egg, bed bug egg, flea egg etc?

longdistanceclaraclara · 24/07/2024 23:47

Nope

TomatoSandwiches · 24/07/2024 23:50

Not for me thank you.

Airyfairy99 · 24/07/2024 23:51

Hmmmmm do they REALLY deep clean it though ? Saying that , hotels dont clean a mattress between guests they just change the bedding ?! Not sure if hotels use mattress protectors but if they do(i hope so) then they will change them at each change over day. People trying a mattress may not use a protector so id be wary of buying second hand. As i type i get a shiver down my spine at the body fluids that could be on that mattress ? Sorry, its a no from me ! Id rather pay a little extra , save a few month longer and buy new.

JaceLancs · 24/07/2024 23:51

No problem for me

TwattyMcFuckFace · 24/07/2024 23:51

No, I'd be too worried about beg bugs and/or fleas.

Sisterdeloris · 24/07/2024 23:52

No chance for many reasons...

They're probably sunken from some fat guy sleeping them. This can happen within a few nights let alone up to 100.
The filth obviously - cant trust them to have fully cleaned it.
It's bound to be damaged in some way, after all it was returned for a reason.
I dont understand the inspection and then recovering it - it's like polishing a turd.
You really cant compare a week or 2 in a hotel bed to one you'll sleep in for years.
Would you buy a second hand pair of shoes.

I'm assuming this is a highly expensive bed.

novocaine4thesoul · 24/07/2024 23:52

I would if I needed to save the money and have a really good mattress for a fraction of the price. I would only buy it if I could return it though after a thorough inspection and it didn't seem like all they said. And I would probably put a mattress protector on it, then you have a sheet etc. anyway - God knows, most of us are sleeping on mattresses that have been slept on by hundreds of others in hotel rooms and that does not seem to give anyone the ick.

Airyfairy99 · 24/07/2024 23:53

How would you REALLY know it was deep cleaned ?

MadameMassiveSalad · 24/07/2024 23:54

Nope

Aquamarine1029 · 24/07/2024 23:54

£200-300 in savings is no incentive at ALL to buy a used mattress in my opinion. Hard pass.

DramaAlpaca · 25/07/2024 00:00

Nope. I don't fancy the thought of that at all.

caringcarer · 25/07/2024 00:03

No.

Pallisers · 25/07/2024 00:04

No. It is actually illegal to sell a second-hand mattress where I live.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 25/07/2024 00:04

Airyfairy99 · 24/07/2024 23:53

How would you REALLY know it was deep cleaned ?

You wouldn't, and you wouldn't know if it had been done properly either.

Fleas in the pupae stage can remain dormant for up to 9 months, and bed bugs can lay dormant for up to 365 days!

My DS works for a removals firm and he said this sort of thing can be fairly rife.

MrsApplepants · 25/07/2024 00:04

No. Too afraid of bed bugs.

Sisterdeloris · 25/07/2024 00:08

I did always wonder what they did with retuned mattresses.

MonsteraMama · 25/07/2024 00:10

No. I don't have an issue sleeping on a hotel mattress for a couple of weeks, but I wouldn't be taking it home with me to put on my own bed. I want my mattress that I will be sleeping on every night, presumably for years, to be mine. I'll happily pay a few hundred quid extra for that!

lemmein · 25/07/2024 01:17

I did - it looked brand new.

Unfortunately it was shit and I replaced it within 6 months. If you're thinking of getting a memory foam I really wouldn't bother unless you like sleeping in a pool of your own sweat 😐

QueenBitch666 · 25/07/2024 01:27

Not in a million years 🤢

Imnotarestaurant · 25/07/2024 01:34

My first instinct was ‘No’ but then I happily sleep in hotel rooms that presumably have had hundreds of other people sleep (and the rest) on them.

So I guess if that was the only way I could afford a decent one I would.
