Would you buy a second hand mattress?

The mattress company we’re looking at ordering from are selling some mattresses at a discount. They make it clear they are the ones that have been returned in the 100 day trial period. Apparently they are then inspected, deep cleaned and given a new cover before being relisted for sale at a discount. They’re £200-300 cheaper, so it’s quite the saving.

Would you see issue in this or not? I’m thinking it’s only like staying at a hotel. DH is more of the mind you can’t put a price on a decent quality mattress and we should buy our own from brand new, even if it means paying more.

YABU - no way would I buy one someone else had potentially slept on for a month or two
YANBU - I would totally buy one! Don’t see the problem at all, it’s a bargain

Simba and similar.

I hate their mattresses.

If I did like them then £2-300 is nowhere near enough to save buying used.

Personally, if I'm going to spend x amount on a mattress then I'd buy new.

Comment about hotels. Do you buy used cutlery?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/07/2024 02:32

I would wonder why they had so many matresses returned...and so look at a different manufacturer.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 25/07/2024 02:41

I wouldn't now but many years ago, as a poor single mother, I bought an ex hotel bed of all things.
It was fine. I slept on that bed for nearly ten years. It was hideous but actually very comfortable.
Not actually sure why I wouldn't do it now. I just wouldn't. I suppose now I'm older I'm fussier than I was. And more concerned with proper lumbar support 😂
Edited to add - I wouldn't even consider a memory foam mattress new or second hand. Awful things especially when you're menopausal.

Opalline · 25/07/2024 02:49

No.

The hotel argument isn't persuasive to me - hotels stays are for a short, finite period of time. A decent mattress is for years.

Agree with a pp, £200 - £300 saving is just not worth it (unless it's a financial deal breaker, in which case, just buy a cheaper mattress 😁)

It's because they have a 100 day trial period.

I wouldn't, but I can't give a logical reason to explain why I'll happily stay in a hotel!

I suppose in a hotel you know it’s for a few nights and then you go to your bed.

Kay286 · 25/07/2024 03:50

Ewww no way

dottiedodah · 25/07/2024 04:03

The other thing apart from hygiene is that someone fat / body kneeed or has Been having bouncy sex on it ,!. No I would save for a better one I think

Oreganoandsage · 25/07/2024 04:24

For that small a differential I'd buy new. Mind you I am currently reclining on a very large comfortable bed in a resort in Bali! I suspect it wasn't brand new at the start of our stay.

ForGreyKoala · 25/07/2024 04:31

I bought a second hand mattress around 20 years ago - and I'm still sleeping on it.

Nothing bad has happened to me - so far 😆😆

ForGreyKoala · 25/07/2024 04:33

I forgot to say I've heard too many stories of people buying an expensive mattress only to find it uncomfortable after a while, so I don't think I will ever buy new.

Shineabrightlight · 25/07/2024 06:27

A year or so ago there was a scam with people selling second hand mattresses . They were delivered tightly packaged and it was only when opened they were discovered to be in absolutely disgusting filthy condition.

I'm not saying at all that this is what the company you are intending to buy from does because it sounds a legitimate company. But I just feel totally put off the idea of buying a second hand mattress by what I heard in the past.

It's because they have a 100 day trial period.

I undertstand that, but if so many are being returned it suggests that they are uncomfortable, smell of rubber, are too hot or some other reason that people don't like them.

Theraffarian · 25/07/2024 07:41

No I wouldn’t , the memory foam layer will have had up to 3 months of someone with a totally different body shape squishing it . They have to replace the top cover , as you wouldn’t buy it if you could actually see body fluid stains , but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still on the next layer down , even with a deep clean . Does a deep clean actually kill things like bed bugs and fleas ? If so would you want to sleep on something that had been that heavily treated with the chemicals needed to do that . I wouldn’t have a memory foam mattress anyway , as for me they run way too hot to sleep on , but obviously that’s a personal choice .

willsandnoodle · 25/07/2024 08:41

Is it a temper mattress? They sell their returned mattresses at the outlet stores.

We bought a temper mattress new, and were given a free , waterproof mattress protector with strict instruction to use it otherwise we wouldn't be able to return.

I wouldn't buy second hand as there is no way to know how clean the house is that the mattress has been in, or how clean the people using it are.

A hotel mattress has bedding changed every day and professional room cleaners.

We've had our temper for about 6 months, it was great at first but it's nothing to write home about in my opinion. Its comfortable, but I still wake up stiff. Wen will go pillow top next time.

susiedaisy1912 · 25/07/2024 08:48

It would have to be at least 70% discounted for me to even consider it. Also I'd want to know if they have had a pest control service check for bed bugs eggs etc.

Portakalkedi · 25/07/2024 08:51

No, there are many other things you can save money on. I'd heard these returned mattresses were given to charity ....

seedsandseeds · 25/07/2024 12:36

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles I think most purchase without trying them out first hence the return rate

I wouldn't buy used cutlery because it's cheap to buy anyway. I wouldn't have an issue with used though, presumably you'd wash them first?

Do you take your own cutlery to restaurants? Grin

alwaysmovingforwards · 26/07/2024 13:15

Well I guess I would if I had no money and alternative was to sleep on the floor.

But in answer to the OP, err no.
Luckily I’m in the position of being able to afford a new mattress every few years, so buying a used one wouldn’t even cross my mind tbh.
