To ask what goes in your beach day picnic?

Family day out to the beach is planned, not something we have done for years, 7 of us in total.

We park a short walk away from the beach and don't have a trailer to transport although think we may need one!

Beach towels, blanket, buckets and spades as well as camping chairs will be out little set up.

But I'm struggling with the picnic - do I freeze loads of bottled water and fill a cool bag with snacks or do we just go somewhere cheap for lunch? Trying to keep costs down!

Picnic ideas are welcomed, was thinking

Sausages in rolls
Fruit - what is easiest to eat - bananas?
Snacky things like soreen bars
Would carrot sticks work?

I feel a bit out of practice so what are the easy things to fill us up and last us the day?

For lightweight portable picnics I often take more of German style rye or pumpernickel bread sandwiches. It’s denser so less likely to get squashed, I just pile a few into a small Tupperware for us.

Crunchy apples also good. Fairly clean, don’t get squished like bananas. Seagulls probably hate them also.

Lemon shortbread or cookies

We just take things like cheese sandwiches/rolls, crisps, apples, rich tea/digestive/plain biscuits, pepperami, crackers, nuts, cereal bars etc c

No chocolate or sweet/sticky things like haribo or doughnuts etc

So basically food that's easily eaten, ambient and not going to give us good poisoning if it's gets a bit warm. Not that there's much chance because the 4½ year old always wants to eat her entire lunch as soon as we stake our claim on the beach ha ha , she's been known to eat everything by 10:30am

A seagull came and took my husband's doughnut right out of his hand (mid bite) in Whitby! We also live in a coastal town and the seagulls are bolshy! I do like them but I think they can be a bit lethal.
Love a picnic - crisps, sandwiches, cake and fruit oh, and plenty of water.

We should be able to shoot the flying rats seagulls. They're fucking awful

Cobblersorchard · 25/07/2024 20:58

I love a picnic normally but not on the beach, everything just tastes of sand. We usually buy chips but take lots of drinks, some low effort fruit and wrapped snacks. We also get an ice cream.

Picnics away from the beach are usually wraps, sausage rolls, scotch eggs, salad, fruit and some sort of cake.

As soon as sand gets near anything though I don’t fancy it at all.

No wonder kids are so desperately fat and unhealthy in the UK.
Have you heard of vegetables, fruit, fish, real meat?

No @Omlettes never heard of any of that shite, where do you get this stuff?

Sounds vile though....🤮

😃I like you, Bluebirdover

Do you really not know what to pack in a picnic??

MikeRafone · 26/07/2024 15:08

Some people

get hot dog sausages, cook them, pop in hot food flask ( warm up with boiling water. Take hot dog rolls or French stick with you

leeverarch · 26/07/2024 15:36

Cheese sandwiches or rolls - I find they are easiest because they don't suffer if they get a bit warm.

Mr Kipling cakes or flapjacks.

Cherry tomatoes and sliced cucumber in a tupperware container.

Apples - we also used to take little packs of raisins when dc small.

Crisps

Water & little cartons of fruit juice (don't load yourself down with drink though as it weighs a ton and you can always refill a water bottle)

Meadowwild · 26/07/2024 15:52

We used to take what they'd have for school packed lunch plus a few treats - so:
Cheese/ham/chicken/salami rolls with some carrots sticks, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and iceberg or rocket. Apples, bananas, mini cheddars, pretzels or crisps, juice boxes and yoghurt tubes. Maybe some cocktail sausages, sausage rolls or mini scotch eggs if staying a long time. Got to leave room for an ice cream, though.

I'm sure they can get all that at home. Picnics are supposed to be a treat, so treat food is entirely appropriate.

"Treat food"...bleugh 🙄Does it go with 'sweet treats'

If you keep the cos lettuce whole you can fill the leaves like wraps

We do this at home. Chicken and chorizo salad boats. Yummy
