To ask what goes in your beach day picnic?

Family day out to the beach is planned, not something we have done for years, 7 of us in total.

We park a short walk away from the beach and don't have a trailer to transport although think we may need one!

Beach towels, blanket, buckets and spades as well as camping chairs will be out little set up.

But I'm struggling with the picnic - do I freeze loads of bottled water and fill a cool bag with snacks or do we just go somewhere cheap for lunch? Trying to keep costs down!

Picnic ideas are welcomed, was thinking

Sausages in rolls
Fruit - what is easiest to eat - bananas?
Snacky things like soreen bars
Would carrot sticks work?

I feel a bit out of practice so what are the easy things to fill us up and last us the day?

Today I stood with my egg sandwich and was ATTACKED by a sea gull. Never have I seen the likes. It swooped into a group of twenty of us and TOOK it and bit my finger. It then came and took all the kids sandwiches. It left the crisps, fruit, cake and jam sandwich.

Four pack of Stella, a bottle of Blossom Hill, and some Quavers.

Best suggestion 👌

Cheese and chive flapjacks
Pasta salads in individual pots (I normally use a tomato based sauce)
Chicken drumsticks
Beetroot and apple coleslaw
Picnic loaf (take the full loaf stuffed with whatever you fancy and slice it while there)
Crisps
Fruit
I like watermelon and feta salad too.

We normally take frozen bottled water - it keeps my wine cool 😂

Cash to buy chips, donuts and vodka slushes 😅

I don't think a picnic is necessarily supposed to be a treat, or it certainly wasn't when I was a child. The day at the beach is the treat, the picnic is just a means of not staving or spending a fortune while you're there.

My day out picnic is generally very similar to a school packed lunch.

When my children were young a picnic for a day out was definitely a treat. Usually a piece of brown sugar and mustard gammon or a chicken to go in rolls or baguettes, salad, crisps, homemade scotch eggs and a cake. Like a PP Delia’s lemon iced preserved ginger cake or a Bakewell slice.

Last time I went to the beach with my now adult children they had been out to buy fresh fish for supper and having demolished the oysters and turbot we made a pile of crab sandwiches the next day to take to the beach.

Favourite sandwiches (in rolls), crisps, mini cake bars, strawberries, water, a flask of coffee.

longdistanceclaraclara · 24/07/2024 15:38

If you're brave about the seagulls- baguette ,butter, cheese, deli meat, hummous, olives, crudités etc.

If they're fuckers where you are a quick sandwich in the car for safety.

The seagulls on our nearest beach recognise a Tesco bag now and will circle and circle until food comes out...

RenoDakota · 24/07/2024 15:39

And mini sausage rolls. Delicious ones like Higgidy.

Tagyoureit · 24/07/2024 15:41

I've been pondering the same today.

I remember when I was little, my mum would cook chicken drumsticks and then wrap them up to keep warm. She'd take a pot of rice and salad and proper plates and cutlery!! It was lovely she was an excellent cook but I could never understand why we could just have sandwiches at the beach especially after one windy day when our lettuce was blowing away! 🤣

A couple of mentions of sea gulls is putting me on edge a bit about having what in my mind seems like a lovely beach picnic.

I go via Tesco and buy a meal deal each, no soggy sandwiches wrapped in cling film. Make sure you take wet wipes and hand sanitizer.

My kind of picnic😂

CinnamonTart · 24/07/2024 16:12

We buy sarnies, crisps, fruit and drink on the way. Making a picnic for us all makes my head explode, so this works quite well for us.

Heydiddlediddlethecatandthefiddle · 24/07/2024 16:14

Fish and chips surely!? Especiallly if you’ve not been in years!
Failing that, I tend to do similar for most picnics we have - sandwiches or wraps, fruit, cucumber etc and then I’d buy an ice cream.

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 24/07/2024 16:21

Rolls with cheese, tuna and cucumber, ham.
Pot of humous with carrots and celery.
Crisps
Quiche
Some kind of homemade cake like lemon drizzle or victoria sponge, don't take one with butter icing or you'll get a melty mess.
Grapes or strawberries or any easy to handle fruit.
Frozen bottles of water.
Hot water in flask and take teabags and milk separately, ready made tea in a flask always tastes horrible.
Ice cream from kiosk on the way back to the car.

No wonder kids are so desperately fat and unhealthy in the UK.
Have you heard of vegetables, fruit, fish, real meat?

Oh bore off! It's a once in a while picnic treat. They probably have fruit and veg all the time at home but it's just a one off!

ChristmasFluff · 24/07/2024 16:25

My beach picnics always include boiled eggs in their shells and a wrap of salt to sprinkle on them. It tastes of my childhood holidays.

A couple of mentions of sea gulls is putting me on edge a bit about having what in my mind seems like a lovely beach picnic.

I go to the beach quite a lot( about half hour drive) and have never had my food taken by a seagull, there are some there but they don't take food directly from people at all, but I know they can be a problem in some places.

VivaLaSpag · 24/07/2024 16:32

If you’re going to Weymouth then I’d recommend only eating under cover of darkness-the seagulls there are savage predators!

Pereroni sticks
Pasties
Apples
Melon
Bananas
Strawberries
Flask of coffee
Bottle of orange juice

Comment back and I'll give you some more. Hand hold at this difficult time.

sofasofa42 · 24/07/2024 16:56

Hard boiled eggs . Everyone goes nuts for them on the beach. I probably do a beach picnic 2/3 times a week ( I don't live in uk!). Fruit salad. Boiled eggs. Rice cakes. Baguette and pate? Popcorn, rice cakes.
Popular here , which isn't my bag at all, is cold hot dogs.... kids love it .
I always always pack a flask of tea.
Cold mini pizzas are fun as well .

hari27 · 24/07/2024 16:59

@ISeriouslyDoubtIt I know!!! We have a caravan at the beach. Never in my ever have I seen that or would have believed it. No shame. I was still recovering from the shock of losing my sandwich when back it came and took the kids ones. Right in amongst the parasols and chairs. I didn't bring those, friends who are much more organised did.

OhmygodDont · 24/07/2024 17:01

We got chased on skeggy beach once by seagulls. Had apparently make the error of a child dropping one single chip and that’s it they darted in like missiles. Chips chips 2oclock.

Told the boy… just drop the chips and run!!! 🏃
