The "baby is too cold!" Comment

Why does it bother me so much? Maybe there's an underlying feeling of not properly knowing my baby's need and someone else has had to step in. BUT I know she's not cold! I have a 7 week old, and there has been a heatwave this weekend, yet when I've come into the room with my in-laws I've repeatedly found baby girl wrapped in a blanket, I've made it clear it's not needed and that she's quite warm in general. I should just ignore it, but does this bother anyone else?

YANBU. It’s 34 degrees in my main room. My in laws walked in and demanded I put socks on my 4 month old. Told no hes too hot. Que a 10 minute long rant about babies getting cold easy. I could’ve screamed. I have a 5 year old .. who I birthed in the middle of a heat wave .. I think we’re quite capable of meeting our own babies needs!!!

At 8 weeks of age, an infant's brain isn't developed enough to understand that they need to cry to get your attention. Therefore it is impossible to 'spoil' a newborn.

Newborns cry for a reason, whether it be hunger, dirty nappy, comfort or illness. They need to be seen to right away.

The idea of leaving a newborn to cry to see if they settle themselves is illogical and unfair on the newborn.

A load of old bollocks.

This is so common and so stupid. I don't know why the older generation love to overheat babies that aren't even theirs

Those nosy people should try keep a hat or socks on a baby, an impossible task

I am of the older generation and think the opposite! DD2 has a new baby and I reminded her that 40+ years ago when DD1 was also born during a heatwave that I let her sleep in just a nappy. The response was a photo of new baby wearing ... a cardigan and little hat while lower half was wrapped in a cotton blanket!

My point still stands - hot babies DO cry. Parents can very easily interpret this to mean their crying baby must be cold, best put more blankets/clothes on .. when actually they’re already too hot. It’s been pointed out this poster actually meant ‘cold babies cry, hot babies die’ .. but her statement does not say or mean this!

I once saw a mum in a cafe with a screaming baby, and I mean screaming. Her friend asked if the baby’s nappy needed changing - her reply was ‘no it’s Pampers, I put in on this morning so it doesn’t need changing til bedtime’ 😮😮 She interpreted their baby dry/stay dry overnight advertising as the nappy is good for 12 hours! 🥺🥺 Equally, the hot baby statement is misleading and can be misinterpreted 🤷‍♀️

I wouldn't be able to help myself- I'd insist PIL's both need to be securely wrapped in a blanket as well if they are feeling 'the cold' that bad, since the circulation does worsen after a certain age.......

I have some beautiful photos of my two sons born in May and August when a heatwave was on. They are in just a nappy and vest, in the garden under a sunshade in their baby carriers in the shade. Really happpy and comfortable. They wore very few clothes for the first few weeks of their lives. So easy to overdress a baby in this hot weather.

I’ll take that as an apology for being called stupid, inaccurate and dangerous 😊

Nope definitely not an apology - no need for one. I also didn’t call you stupid, inaccurate and dangerous - I said your comment was stupid, inaccurate and dangerous - and my view still stands 🤷‍♀️ hot babies do cry 🤷‍♀️

I think telling parents that hot babies will cry is dangerous in my opinion.

We know that overheating is a cause of SIDS. Babies die in their sleep because they get too hot and get too unwell to cry for help.

For example, if you was to tell a new mum that hot babies cry, they may think oh I’ll leave them in this baby grow and sleeping bag as @Unknownsecret told me she’ll cry if she’s hot. But research shows babies are at risk of dying in their sleep if too hot, so the advice you gave this new mother could be very dangerous

Totally agree.

Totally agree.

I would be saying babies cry if they’re too hot or too cold .. not one or the other.
