Naming dog similar name to DD

For context this is light hearted, DD is fine with it and it's all very funny.

DD is 18, she leaves for uni this year. We have decided to get a dog to fill our empty nest and it's confirmed that we will get the puppy a day after DD moves out! The puppy is a little blonde dachshund and DH joked it would be what DD would look like if she was dog (blonde, long and skinny). DD is named Bella - so I'm thinking we name the dog Beau!!
DD thinks it's funny and DH likes it but my family and friends think it's crazy and a bit mean to DD.

AIBU to give my dog a similar name to DD?

I wouldn’t have said they were similar names to be honest!

Wedoourish · 21/07/2024 17:26

Go for it!

Sunnydiary · 21/07/2024 17:27

They aren’t similar names though…

HereForTheFreeLunch · 21/07/2024 17:28

They are by different enough. Go for it. I thought you were going to call her Bella.
Beau will be fine

Ereyraa · 21/07/2024 17:28

They’re not similar

BirthdayRainbow · 21/07/2024 17:29

Literally the only similarity is they start with the same letter!

Isn't Beau a male name..

I would be wondering why I'm letting other people influence a decision of mine too.

PonyPatter44 · 21/07/2024 17:29

They aren't similar names at all. Cute name for a dog, though. Enjoy your puppy!

Bella and Ella or Stella are similar. Beau is not!

Willsean · 21/07/2024 17:32

Similar doesn't mean they rhyme, it means likeness in the word. Of course they're similar as they're different forms of the same meaning.

gynaeissue · 21/07/2024 17:32

For all those saying they’re not similar… Belle and Beau are the feminine and masculine words for “beautiful” in French and Bella is the Italian / Spanish version of Belle.

OP I think it’s great - funny and not offensive! And apparently lots of people don’t even get the connection

Arconialiving · 21/07/2024 17:34

I was going to say the same @gynaeissue

CoffeeBeansGalore · 21/07/2024 17:34

YABU for not including a photo of this gorgeous little pup!!!

Sunnydiary · 21/07/2024 17:39

Puppy Tax!!!

pigsDOfly · 21/07/2024 17:41

The two names might have the same meaning in French but they have no similarity in their pronunciation in French or English and, as is clear from this thread, the 'similarity' is different enough that it will not be picked up by most English speaking people.

It certainly isn't mean to your DD, especially given that she finds the idea amusing.

Ignore your friends and family, they're being a bit silly.

I wouldn’t have said they were similar names to be honest!

This. Absolutely fine.

Darkfire · 21/07/2024 17:48

As I started reading this I thought you were going to say your DD was called Ella and you were naming the dog Bella.
Bella and Beau aren’t that similar for it to be noticeable.

ClarasSisters · 21/07/2024 17:49

Where's the dog pic?!

DSis's rescue dog's name is ds1's nickname. Turns out they are very much alike Grin

blueberryforest · 21/07/2024 17:55

I wouldn't expect most people to make the connection between the names, unless you point it out. If your DD likes the idea, I wouldn't worry about anyone else's opinion.

I sometimes accidentally called one of my past dogs by my youngest sister's name. No idea why, though DSis is dog-obsessed, so maybe it has something to do with that. She thought it was funny!

RuthW · 21/07/2024 18:13

They are completely different names.

WildLemur · 21/07/2024 18:16

I know the etymology but I agree with the majority, they aren't similar names.

Justcallmebebes · 21/07/2024 18:26

I'm so glad others have said it, I thought it was just me

Ketzele · 21/07/2024 18:32

I have a friend whose mum was insistent she wanted to get a new dog. Her dad - let's call him James - said absolutely not. In the end it got so heated (in what was already a very difficult relationship) that he laid down an ultimatum, said it's either me or a dog.

Not long after he got home to find a new dog. Which his wife had named James.

So that was the end of that marriage.

Hairspray123 · 21/07/2024 19:12

I had this exact same situation, my child is called Peter and I called my dog Florence!

FuzzyStripes · 21/07/2024 19:14

I think it’s fine. The meaning might be the same but the wording and sound is very different.
