Dogs in restaurants

MealDealDreamz · 21/07/2024 10:50

Informal dining and cafes, fine. Pubs, fine. But only if dogs are on the floor and reasonably well behaved (by that I mean not barking all the time).Restaurant not fine. Am I alone in this?
If I am paying to go somewhere specifically to enjoy the food and pay extra for it and want to enjoy a special evening (birthday) why do I have to put up with a dog lying on the floor at the table next to me?. I just don't think this is necessary or acceptable. Am I totally alone in this?

Record number of dog thefts so it's rare for people to leave dogs tied up. People definitely don't leave dogs in cars now

Tourist attractions tend to be full of tourists who are likely to be staying at places eg campsites, holiday parks which all have rules that dogs can't be left on site alone. Lots of holiday cottages have similar rules also.

But then you just can't visit that tourist attraction surely? You have a dog. My little daughter couldn't wee because she was scared of the barking dogs. We had to use the disabled loos to get away from the dogs which isn't right either. Dogs should not be inside that type of building. Apart from assistance dogs obviously.

Grim. 🤢

I wouldn't eat somewhere that allows dogs.

(Assistance dogs exception)

What makes assistance dogs not grim? Just out of curiosity?

No, the people who started the 10000 other threads on this agree with you, but it's been about 2 days since the last one so a new one was definitely needed.

@KenAdams

people can post about what they want. Hth..

SemperIdem · 21/07/2024 13:23

I can’t say it really bothers me, but if it did, I would check if the restaurant is dog friendly before going.

I'm assuming the attraction allows dogs?
They've probably googled where allows dogs and gone. The place is probably advertising on the websites for dog friendly days out etc. It's the attractions choice to do so not the dog owners

It's hardly the crime of the century to go somewhere you're allowed to be or are actively encouraged to visit

Most tourist attractions in touristy areas will need to make a decision about allowing dogs and this one chose to do so

Well they don't have owners that are 'entitled' for a start....

Possibly, yes. But I disagree with that policy. I also disagree with the dog owners who have prioritied their fur baby over human pre-schooler's comfort. Basically, I strongly feel there's too many dogs full stop. A day doesn't go by where I don't see a dog taking a crap or a pile of dog shit or a baggy hanging from a tree. It's grim.

These anti-dogs threads are really getting boring...

There are restaurants and coffee shops that don't allow dogs, so just use those.

End of story.

These anti-dogs threads are really getting boring...

I disagree.

It's dogs and their inconsiderate owners that are getting boring.

Thank you for starting the thread OP. We need more anti-dog threads. I don't think we have enough of them.

Many dog owners can't or won't control their pets when they are outside. It's even worse when they are misbehaving in cafés, pubs or restaurants.

They bark and stink and shouldn't be allowed in any public place where food for humans is prepared or consumed.

So many dog owners think everyone should put up with their horrible pets jumping up at people and harassing them. "He's only being friendly", "He won't bite" "She just wants to play". FFS 🤬

And no. Rowdy adults and naughty children are not worse than dogs.

In my experience no human, adult or child has ever:

Sat under the next table letting off foul stinking farts while I am trying to enjoy a meal.

Tried to steal food from my plate or whined and begged when I told it to fuck off.

Lay across the floor so anyone wanting to pass by has to climb over it.

The fact that there are far, far fewer of them than pampered pet dogs and they are a necessity.

Goldusty · 21/07/2024 13:31

Btw anyone been to the 'Buttsliders Cafe' recently?

What makes assistance dogs not grim? Just out of curiosity?

Assistance dogs are trained to behave in public and the ones that can't be trained don't become assistance dogs. Also, they are far fewer in number, so you will only rarely see one.

this is a great blog run by a rather fab London resident. She takes her dog to some great places. Has given me some great ideas. I think people mean pubs really not restaurants. It’s still quite hard to take your dog to an actual restaurant…

BTW
If I have to put up with buggies everywhere and little Henrietta and Otto screaming the place down, then you can make space for my immaculately behaved Jack Russell. 🤔

Strike 2! 👏

AvrielFinch · 21/07/2024 13:36

Absolutely fine. When we booked a table we were asked if the dog was well behaved. Said yes. People who did not see us walking in with the dog did not know it was there. A small dog underneath the table who never barks and simply stayed there. But she has separation anxiety we are working on and can not be left alone for long at the moment.

I’ve seen children do all three of those things 😂

If you don’t want to eat/visit places that have dogs, just go elsewhere.

YANBU I don’t like them in cafes or restaurants tbh but some people do and that’s the way of the world now in Uk and many other countries. I’ve started to make a habit of calling restaurants in advance if it’s for a special occasion and asking if they’re dog friendly or not. If they are I just don’t go. Simple.

If it’s a more impromptu visit for no particular reason I tend not to call ahead though and for this reason I really wish they’d roll out a nationwide policy where cafes and restaurants etc have some kind of sticker like a paw sticker on their website and window to indicate if they accept dogs.

It would save me and dog owners a lot of hassle knowing instantly without having to ring!

Ddog on the other hand is impeccably behaved.

So don't eat out and make other people feel uncomfortable...your decision to have a dog...not mine

Rebusa · 21/07/2024 13:45

Philandbill · 21/07/2024 13:02

The dogs in the cafe I was in yesterday weren't well behaved. I'd just started my lunch when two different people came in with their dogs. Lots of barking and pathetic owners saying "be good Billy" etc which dogs ignored. No sign on the door to say it was dog friendly. Dog owners like you @Startingagainandagain come across as incredibly entitled...

Yep, I’ve rarely seen a dog friendly OR no dogs on a restaurant window and rarely on a website. I had to call ten places for brunch earlier this year before I found one that was not dog friendly.

I really wish every restaurant would just tell us on their website if it is or not.

I was in an Eastern European city earlier this year. I saw on Google a cool brunch place, got there in an Uber and the minute I stepped in some customers dog run up to at the counter and wouldn’t leave me alone. I have no idea if it’s temperament or intention and was getting worried as it seemed obsessed with me, but I calmly asked the staff member at the counter to get the dog from me.Thankfully she spoke English. She had to proper tug at its collar to get it to move from me and the owner was nowhere in sight. I assume they were at the tables round the corner as that’s where the dog had ran out from.

I was grateful she intervened but after she’d handled the dog it looked like she was going to prepare my food without washing her hands so I decided to give it a miss.

ETA: the problem is almost everyone thinks their dog is well behaved, and is safe around others. I’d just prefer not to have them in restaurants and cafes. I also hate it when they do that shaking thing, I wonder what they’re shaking out their fur into the air and if it’s wet that’s another issue 😭😬

Thanks! Yes, pubs and cafes tend to be okay with dogs. But we get soooo many of these threads bemoaning dogs in restaurants... it is the very rare restaurant round here that allows dogs. I'm off to South Wales next week if anyone wants to complain about dogs in restaurants there... please be specific. And tell me if the food was good.

And I agree, I would prefer your Jack Russell to a place crowded with pushchairs!

TheCoolOliveBalonz · 21/07/2024 13:49

Children are humans. I'm not sure why it's funny to pretend they're similar to dogs. My children should be given priority over dogs every single time. It's weird pretending that dogs are as important as humans. Lots of dog owners have lost site of the fact that dogs are animals and should be treated thus. I'll admit to not knowing much about dogs but I can't imagine it makes a dog healthy or happy to be treated like a human. The last dog I knew who was taken to restaurants was ultimately put down for biting as the owners had failed to do any dog training.

Rebusa · 21/07/2024 13:54

Agreed. I don’t have kids but I’d much prefer children in a restaurant to dogs and have never had a child run up and sniff me or made me worry for my safety the way dogs have .

As you say there’s no comparison so it shouldn’t even be a topic of discussion on the thread as it’s about dogs in restaurants.

Children are just little humans - dogs aren’t! @TheCoolOliveBalonz
