Any worries? It is chaos out there by the look of the news.

My experience is that I’m not able to work today and had trouble using my debit card this morning. The transaction eventually went through but it’s not showing on my account.

Planes grounded as mass worldwide IT outage hits airlines, media and banks

The cause of the outage is unclear - but Microsoft says it's taking "mitigation issues".

Just goes to show though that Mr Putin wouldn't have to bomb us. He just needs to mess with tech to cause absolute chaos and unrest.

All he'd have to do is install a board of directors who think that "testing is for pussies" and then sit back and wait for the inevitable.

If you were so minded (luckily for aforementioned executives our press isn't) then you would be able to show that 80% of the major outages these past 5 years have been caused by cost cutting firms with eye watering bonuses but no QA team, and the other 20% form actual criminal activity.

Although I personally would happily see releasing untested code made a criminal offence.

Imagine being halfway over the Atlantic and the planes systems crashed ....

Twodozenroses · 19/07/2024 11:28

I wasn’t aware of the issue until I heard it on the radio. I’d been to the garage which was (oddly) asking for card payments only no cash which was fine, I paid with Apple Pay. I also paid on Apple Pay at greggs. I used my online banking and my work laptop is sadly fine. The only issue I had was when I got dog food at the pet shop and they said it was cash only so I went to Tesco and got money out at the cash point without an issue. That’s when I heard of the issue on the radio.

sounds like an absolute nightmare if you’re at the airport or in a hospital though.

There you go.

It’s blatantly a cyber attack, despite the denials from the cyber security company. They would never admit this or the value of the firm plummets. Russians are probably behind it.

You really know nothing about modern IT, do you?

Differentstarts · 19/07/2024 11:31

It honestly amazes me that the government has to say this do people seriously have no common sense but then I guess this is why every product has to have warning labels plastered all over it because it seems adults also need to be told not to drink cleaning products and to remove a child from clothes before putting them in the washing machine

Summermightbegreat · 19/07/2024 10:21

Well the important thing is we've all managed to get on Mumsnet.

🤣🤣🤣

HowardTJMoon · 19/07/2024 11:33

You've never come across "But it worked on my test VM!"?

The problem - well, one of the many problems - with IT these days is that there are so many platforms and combinations of OS/applications/patches/config that it's impossible to test for all of them or even a significant subset of them. That's not to give CrowdStrike a pass for this but it's very easy to tick a "We've tested this" box but for those tests to be borderline useless.

shellyleppard · 19/07/2024 11:33

@GoldieLocks09 apparently its causing problems with house exchange too.... sorry 😐

Arghgerroffyabastard · 19/07/2024 11:34

If you want the technical details, this is down to a crowdstrike software update that includes a dodgy windows kernel driver that crashes the server.

The temporary fix is to access the system’s volume through an emergency boot (or similar) and delete the driver.

It’s not a cyberattack.

TeamPineapple · 19/07/2024 11:35

I work in the NHS, primary care, and can't access patient records, which means I can't help any patients today. Thankfully my role doesn't work on an appointment system so it's not chaos for me, but the poor clinical team and receptionists can't function if they can't get onto they system 😟I'm working remotely today, but I can bet there's a lot of very unhappy patients (understandably) giving the understaffed receptionists a hard time, and the clinical team, who already work incredibly hard, must be hellishly stressed too.

Caththegreat · 19/07/2024 11:36

That's people today.as long as they and their remarkable kids are OK who cares about anyone else

PerkingFaintly · 19/07/2024 11:36

What is this weirdness of simltaneously:

a) suggesting that people should keep a stock of essential perishable goods in their house in case of emergencies (good); but

b) deriding the idea of keeping a stock of a non-perishable, flexible essential ie cash, also for emergencies?

Sometimes what's on your store shelf will meet whatever the emergency need turns out to be, and sometimes it won't. Keeping cash as one of your emergencies stores, if you're financially able, is part of the same common sense as keeping concrete goods.

Newsenmum · 19/07/2024 11:38

Blinketyblinkblank · 19/07/2024 09:21

Yes I'm worried about this.
A week or so ago Sainsbury's couldn't process card payments when I was in doing my shopping.. I had some cash on me that day but I'm off to the supermarket today and don't have any cash as back up .

Some are ok and some are cash only

TokyoSushi · 19/07/2024 11:38

Why is pretty much everything affected, except for my work computer?! Bad times!

*Looking at you DH, sitting in the garden, cos outage, innit...'

PoliteCritic · 19/07/2024 11:38

Home delivery cancelled as payment could not be taken.

Cornflakelover · 19/07/2024 11:39

I often get paid in cash
mobile hairdresser
a lot of my older clients pay cash
plus I get tips in cash

I always have a stash of cash in the house
£20 in my car and all my small change I put in one of those cash bottles to save it
i keep at least £100 in my purse
and I pay cash wherever I can

Hoppinggreen · 19/07/2024 11:39

Arghgerroffyabastard · 19/07/2024 11:26

This is exactly the wrong response.

Given the complexity and interconnectedness of systems these days, and how easily things can go wrong, outages are inevitable. It’s very seldom caused by incompetence or recklessness (unless it’s the business recklessly underfunding or defunding their technical teams).

Most often this happens because of some unexpected combination of software or settings that didn’t exist in the environment where the testing happened, but does exist out in the world, as evidenced by the fact that not all crowdstrike customers are having outages.

The thing this company needs most now are people that understand what’s happened, can get it fixed fast and roll out the fix. The people involved in this one will have that understanding, and be very well placed if this happens again - they’re now more valuable to the company, not less.

I think people not in IT have no idea how close most systems are to a balls up on a daily basis.
Its why some people get paid £££ to prevent and/or fix it.
DH could shut down all of one huge Govt dept with a few keystrokes and when Brexit happened him and his colleagues spent hours over a weekend making sure everything worked.
People only value IT when it doesn't work.
The Geeks have certainly inherited The Earth.

Nice plop and run @SSpratt
I can confirm it is not chaos out there. Just did my shopping, all fine with card payments.

It wasn't a cyber attack, it was a dodgy code update at Crowdstrike. Someone is losing their job after this!

Believe that if you like…..

And who’s paying you to say that?

PerkingFaintly · 19/07/2024 11:41

Ditto the peculiar snipes about paying utility bills by cash.

Posters who keep a cash stash are not saying, "I never, ever use Direct Debits or online banking."

They are saying, "I use a mixed strategy, to hedge risk."

This is entirely sensible.

Some posters attacking folk for doing this is weird! Some people seem to be so in love with their tech they can't cope with other people not sharing their devotion.

Where would I store 3 days worth of bottled water? On the living room floor.
