Any worries? It is chaos out there by the look of the news.

My experience is that I’m not able to work today and had trouble using my debit card this morning. The transaction eventually went through but it’s not showing on my account.

Planes grounded as mass worldwide IT outage hits airlines, media and banks

The cause of the outage is unclear - but Microsoft says it's taking "mitigation issues".

Relevant xkcd

I referred to this very cartoon in a recent job interview - apparently it's one of the factors that went in my favour...

Your shopping day and essentials aren’t the same thing, that’s pretty obvious. I’m sure they’ll be fine for a couple days without the weekly shop.

I don’t have a shopping day, I run everything down until the fridge is empty. If I had to go shopping today it would be because I absolutely had to. Not all of us keep lots of things to keep us going for days on end. Maybe that’s something I should rectify, but when you are living on a budget that’s not always possible. Could keep beans/soup and fruit in a tin, but that’s about it. Toilet paper, milk, bread etc, absolutely not.

ClaudiaWankleman · 19/07/2024 13:49

I've just returned from Tesco and the fishmonger and had absolutely no issue using card with either. No sense of chaos to be found in east London.

Not if you have enough fibre with it.

He's consuming the 18 eggs for the "protein". There are other foods with protein available, or he can buy some (tasteless) protein powder and mix it in with his normal food.

Yes it's the protein. He did say he might get the protein powder but I felt more comfortable with him eating actual food. Any ideas about cheap protein are welcome, he does eat Greek yogurt, cheese, drink milk and we eat chicken regularly, I think he'd happily get his protein hit from sirloin steak but that would impact how much he is saving for university in September. He does eat other food and to be fair he's eaten lots of eggs this week as I've been away, he's working long hours and eggs are quick and easy if he's done a 15 hour day.

If he was eating fewer eggs I'd probably have only bought six so would still have needed to buy some today.

AFmammaG · 19/07/2024 13:54

I just walked to my GP appointment. They couldn’t see me because of the outage. Obviously they couldn’t call me either in advance because they had no idea who was turning up or when. Ridiculous!

“A weeks worth”

Enough food for a week. Autocorrect took out the ‘ . Where has the Government said that?

There was a campaign about this recently and threads on here speculating about the reasons behind it - war, contamination of water supply and so on. Apocalypse aside, its basic life skills to have previsions for emergencies - medicines, bottled water, torch, tinned food. The poorer you are the more important it is to prepare because its going to be harder for you when everyone starts competing for resources.

Noone needs to eat 18 eggs in a week. It’s insane. But if he insists surely he should buy and pay for them himself. And make sure he doesn’t eat everything so that everyone else have to go without or buy more.

There are lots of things that no one needs to eat, I buy chocolate every week and while I know I don't need it I like it and lots of foods fall into that category.

I buy food with the strange idea that people in the house will eat it and every week, Thursday or Friday, I go out and buy more which seems pretty normal to me.

Who pays for food in this house isn't actually up for discussion as this thread is about the outrage and I was explaining that there may be days when people haven't got much in because it is shopping day for them.

I've got an online delivery booked for this afternoon with essentials in that for elderly neighbour (86) and MIL (81)- Ocado

Also pharmacy has not received prescription from the GPs so no Oestrogel for me over the weekend

This is not a computer issue.

This is an incompetence issue.

There should be a back up system, like we have for air traffic control.

Guardian is reporting it's all fixed now.

Not even slightly. The massive companies who can use remote KVM control of non-booted systems will probably have managed it. Small businesses will have been scrambling around for that IT-literate friend-of-a-friend who can sort it for them. Medium-sized businesses affected by it will still be cleaning up a week from now.

DP got booked on another flight out of Schipol but that has now been cancelled. They’re handing out info about hotels. He thinks he will book a hotel and try again tomorrow when hopefully things have settled down. I know it’s stupid in the grand scheme of things but I am so upset - he’s been away a fortnight and I was so looking forward to him getting home!

.I hope he makes it tomorrow. I've been away for a few days and my train home got cancelled, my DP was upset. I managed to get to a nearby town and he drove to pick me up which I thought was nice after 40 years that he couldn't wait to see me.

In my opinion, it simply shows how foolish the business community has ALWAYS been in believing Microsoft’s rhetoric. There has always been better software but their marketing machine is very good and scares companies into submission. This is the result 😢

Why? This is nothing to do with Microsoft. It was caused by a product from another company...the only link to Microsoft is that product runs on Windows.

Only Windows is affected, not Linux and Apple for example.

Yes

Because the software that caused the problem only runs on Windows.

Yes, and??

There are CrowdStrike agents for OSX and Linux as well. It was only the Windows agent that had the problem.

Orangesandlemons77 · 19/07/2024 14:07

So how on earth is ranting about Microsoft even remotely relevant? Microsoft did not cause the problem.

Precisely. It'd be like ranting at Ford because someone lost control of a Fiesta and mowed down a row of children outside a school.

Yep, but different operating systems, so different CrowdStrike, so different patches that could cause a problem. This is down to incompetent testing before deployment.

Never change, aibu. The 4 horsemen of the apocalypse could be riding in and someone would still log on to be the food police.
