To hate going to the hairdresser!

Sleepdeprived42long · 18/07/2024 14:03

I’m an introvert and I just hate going to the hairdresser-all the small talk, feeling like I have to share information about myself! I’m not hugely interested in developing an ongoing relationship with them and I always feel like it takes forever like they think I want to be there for as long as possible. Then have to pay £££ for the privilege. Have tried to colour at home and have tried many many different hairdressers over the years. All the same!

I’ve been putting it off for months now contemplating going grey but I’m only in my early 40s so not quite ready for that yet. Just wish there was a ‘quick and quiet’ appointment I could book! Anyone else feel the same way?

I feel the same way, if that helps. In the end, I just get on with it, but only like once or twice a year, and then afterwards I try to shake off the cringe feelings I have about my social interactions. Alternatively, pretend to speak a foreign language 😂

Bumbers · 18/07/2024 14:10

I hate it too! My husband now cuts my (long, but straight cut hair). So much better!

Yellowcarrot · 18/07/2024 14:11

I’m the same OP, I really hate going to the hairdressers. The whole experience is torture. I only went to the hairdressers once last year. But last time I went I tried a different hairdressers and just booked in for a dry cut. I was in and out within about 15mins it was amazing. I have no idea why I always booked cut and blow dry before so expensive and horrible. I do have a bit of grey and used to get my hair dyed sometimes but I’m blond so the grey isn’t too obvious so I’ve decided to embrace it! The way forward for me is a quick dry cut and then out of there!

spicysamosahotcupoftea · 18/07/2024 14:11

Maybe specify when you call to book that you'd like a 'quick and quiet' appointment?

No need to give a reason. Hairdresser would probably appreciate it

SummerDays2020 · 18/07/2024 14:12

Absolutely. The small talk, strangers touching me and yes, it going on forever!

Comedycook · 18/07/2024 14:14

I hate it...the talking isn't too bad...I just find it a massive chore.

Dettolallin · 18/07/2024 14:14

This is a case of needing to find the right hairdresser/salon! I work in a salon and we have a stylist who'd be super happy to do a quiet appointment, and another who I direct clients to who like to talk but hate small talk or personal chat, and prefer to discuss current affairs in depth! Maybe ask around on a local Facebook group for a recommendation.

Lolatusernamesuggestions · 18/07/2024 14:14

I really hate it. I go to a different one each time even though they are always nice. It is a me problem stemming from not liking to be touched maybe. When It starts looking a bit Lego hair I have to do something about it. I'd leave it as long as I could otherwise.

TheGlitterFairy · 18/07/2024 14:15

Agreed it’s awful…takes way too long and is v expensive

What exactly do you expect if you want it done properly?

twomanyfrogsinabox · 18/07/2024 14:18

Can you not do your own wash in colour? There must be tons of Youtube tutorials, try an easy wash out one first in case of disasters.

TheGlitterFairy · 18/07/2024 14:18

@Nanny0gg but it usually isn’t done properly though which is why it’s irritating.
Plenty of others on here seem to agree. Good for you if you don’t have that experience

I've recently had a breakthrough in that I'm neurodivergent and have found a neurodivergent hairdresser!!!

She works alone in a very calming salon.

Only takes one client at a time most of the time.

Uses the quietest hairdryer on the market.

Has done everything possible to make it a relaxing experience for the client as she understands that many people find hairdressers overwhelming.

I had to ask around on Facebook but on my enquiries found a few salons with "silent" appointments in the back of the salon in a quiter space. And had a few mobile/home salon recs as well. Shop around,
you will eventually find a good fit.

My town isn't all that big and my hairdressers is only 20 mins away in a quiet village. So you don't have to be in a major city to find these sorts of places.

ilovesooty · 18/07/2024 14:18

No. I like going to the hairdresser. I've been using the same one for over 40 years anyway.

SickofCovid · 18/07/2024 14:20

Ask hairdresser do they have a quiet chair?

PointsSouth · 18/07/2024 14:20

Hate it. I'd rather go to the dentist.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 18/07/2024 14:21

I love it, but my hairdresser understands that sometimes I really need to sit quietly, especially if I go straight after work. You'll notice lots of people sit in silence, it's not unusual.

I go to a nice salon very close to home with massage chairs and decent coffee, and I'm happy to pay for something I can't do myself.

Sleepdeprived42long · 18/07/2024 14:22

@PointsSouth you've summed it up there-I actually prefer going to the dentist 🙈

My DH cuts mine as well. I genuinely haven't been to a hairdresser since 1988 🤣

Ponderingwindow · 18/07/2024 14:23

I’ve hated it my whole life. Them adult onset allergies made it truly difficult. I had someone that was working with me, but it was still hard just to get a cut and stay safe. When Covid hit I resorted to trimming my own hair. I never went back.

at this point I have good scissors and some thinning shears. I’ve gotten good enough at cutting it myself that I’ve even started doing a bit more than a blunt cut.

DancingLions · 18/07/2024 14:24

Yeah it's the fact it takes hours that I struggle with. I also feel self conscious sitting there with a huge mirror in front of me! I'm older than you but have let my hair go grey now. It's so freeing

My hair used to look lovely straight after being done but my roots used to come through so quick and I never got the hang of doing a good blow dry at home.

My hair is in much better condition now it's not dyed anymore and I keep it long enough that I can just put it up so it's minimal effort.

Superscientist · 18/07/2024 14:24

Yep!
About 15 years ago my partner learnt how to cut my hair, I had already been doing his. I haven't been to a hairdressers since.

That's amazing. Years ago I joked about wanting to train as a hairdresser so I could open a salon without all the small talk. Could somehow look at you and know what hairstyle would work.
I hadn't been to a hairdressers since pre-lockdown but spotted one literally on my doorstep and popped in last week. The woman was lovely but made a comment about how she feels like twenty different people at the end of the day so I imagine she just matches your energy when you go in.
We ended up grumbling about the Tory government, talking about the need for MH services to be funded better and conspiracy theories.

nobodysdaughter · 18/07/2024 14:28

"I'm bored!" I cried out last time, and "I feel so TRAPPED!". I was like a child. It took HOURS though, and despite having work to do, I always find it extremely challenging. My hair ended up looking amazing though. I work in a similar industry, so it's helpful to see the clients side sometimes as well. Getting my nails done as I type this, and I'm beyond desperate for it to be over!

romany4 · 18/07/2024 14:28

Yanbu.

I'm an introvert. I hate the small talk and it makes me really uncomfortable staring at myself in the mirror and the focus all being on me.
I wish there was a salon specifically for quiet, socially anxious and introverted people where you don't have to speak!
