But not for future kids to act as a deterrant? Just an idea

@Soukmyfalafel people already can't get seen quickly in hospital because services are stretched to breaking point because of overpopulation. I only see it getting better with fewer people born.

Why does anyone NEED more than two kids? Plenty of things people want in life they don't get, why is having children any different. What are you not getting from two kids that more would provide?

And then in another few decades the kids that were born to pay the pensions will need plenty of more kids born to pay for THEIR pensions. That sounds sustainable, NOT! Sometimes I think people forget children will be old themselves one day.

Well, yes. The whole system, both capitalist and socialist, depends on growth, unless you go down the "reducing life expectancy" route. The latter might appeal to 18 year olds or (morally extremely neutral) extraterrestrials, but as one gets older, one tends to find the idea of dying in the next 12 months more and more objectionable.

I have little hope that human society in its current form will still be here in 500 years, but that's pretty moot since I won't be around to be proved right or wrong. In the meantime I was kind of hoping that we could reduce the number of kids going to bed hungry, regardless of our views of their parents' lifestyles.

You don't get extra wages because you choose to have another child, why should you get extra benefits?

LewishamMumNow · 21/07/2024 17:46

This is not true! I can't claim it for my third, but I can claim it for my first 2 - I do not (and have never since you are asking) claimed any other benefits in my life. I have a decent full time job, but I can claim for my first two, and not my third.

You’re totally wrong. I have 3 children. I get child benefit for all 3.

Because it is a stupid cruel policy that punishes children for the decisions of their parents…

And it is not a deterrent unless you want people in general to fear having more than 2 kids - anyone can fall on hard times even if they were once high earners easily capable of sustaining a large family.

Children can be supported in other ways.

it is a deterrent for some.

No . I saw some eejit woman on the news saying it should be easier for her to get benefits , it's her lifestyle choice to have 4 kids and we the taxpayer should help her .
Just no , , if you can't afford to pay for your own kids then don't have them .

It becomes a lifestyle choice - I hope they do t lift this for the sake of the children.

it’s very wrong.

Lammarammma · 21/07/2024 22:10

Don’t lift.

Lammarammma · 21/07/2024 22:12

ebadame · 21/07/2024 17:50

There really wouldn't

Oh some would. Any child born to gain a lifestyle is wrong.

Useruserdoubleuser · 21/07/2024 22:21

Rather see money spent on help for young people who are not on benefits but struggling to ever afford even one child while they both work.
Put the money into childcare for working parents. Yes I know many on benefits are working. Better and cheaper childcare will help them too.

Pennyswimsplash · 21/07/2024 22:26

That's what they did when they brought it in. They gave about two years notice that it was starting in 2017 and any children born before the 5th of April 2017 got benefits and thereafter the 2 child cap came in.

Pennyswimsplash · 21/07/2024 22:28

People think the taxpayer should subsidise them having more kids. Why???

WobblyBoots · 21/07/2024 17:59

'Start shaming feckless parents'. Your tone is a disgrace.

Have a think.

The outcome is the same for the children regardless of whether you think their parents are at fault or not. It's solving nothing just plunging more children into poverty. And guess what? Bringing children up in poverty does not lead to good outcomes for them or society as a whole. So it is within our interest to support all children regardless of how we view their parents choices.

Edited

I don't know why you think it's a disgrace to expect parents to pay for the kids they brought into the world. Maybe people need more education on how expensive kids actually are. Stop blaming the rest of us for kids being in poverty when we didn't conceive them. Some people seem to think they have a god given right to have 4+ kids-they don't. There are some people who aren't even blessed with ONE child! Or stopped at one or two as they couldn't afford any more. Most people would struggle with three kids unless they were on very good wages, it's not bloody rocket science.

I think you're wrong. It literally states on the child benefit government page that you can claim child benefit for all the children that you have. I'd speak to CAB if you're unsure how to claim.

Choirreality · 22/07/2024 05:09

They need to fix absent parents avoiding child maintenance. Setting up LTD companies, taking lower paid jobs etc.

ll09sm · 22/07/2024 06:43

Because it’s some people’s mission in life to be a burden on the taxpayer. And they don’t any further encouragement or rewards for being feckless. And yes, a great many of these people are feckless. They are not in the main salt of the earth types who just fell on hard times.

Just a quick fact though, less than half of the people in this country and net contributors. Probably doesn’t mean much in MN world where freebies are the way to go and why should anyone pay for anything when there is a magic money tree. But this means that we have an ever dwindling number of people in this country praying for the majority who on a net basis contribute nothing. And yes contribution means cold hard economic productivity. Because that’s what pays for the freebies.
