To think LIDL's deciin to remove the shoulder handle on their bags for life was made by a man?

I probably am but honestly, this is just another example of the decline in our civilisation. I am very weak and struggle to carry shopping in ordinary hand carrier bags. Most supermarkets just have regular handles on their bags for life so, imo, LIDL's were massively superior in providing two handle options. I use them everywhere, and refuse any other bags.

However, the other day I went out without my BFL and was forced to spend 65p on a new one in LIDL. I assumed I was given a reject as it only had small handles. I called the manager even. But no, it turns out the new stock has only regular handles. Why? Cost reasons, I imagine. But seriously, is it only me who has to carry heavy things in a shoulder bag?

That's why I think the decision was made by a man. They seem to be happy to carry everything in their hands.

Anyway, when LIDL stop blahing on about the euros, I plan to send them a complaint on social media. 😡

Is this serious?

feathermucker · 17/07/2024 17:39

Those unimaginable bastards 😉

LibertyDuck · 17/07/2024 17:39

But the shoulder handles are a total pain because when you're carrying the bag with the normal handles (as most people do) they just get in the way. So well done Mr Lidl, good decision!

DazedandConfused1234 · 17/07/2024 17:40

Well, not in the scheme of major national problems, no, but it is annoying.

Buy your own bags and take them with you. We should all be doing this as much as possible anyway.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 17/07/2024 17:41

Were the bags a different size? In the Co Op our 40p bags just have carry handles, but our £1 ones have both types of handle.

This!

maybe you would be best getting a backpack to put your shopping in?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/07/2024 17:44

I’m totally with you Op! You absolutely need the shoulder handles. I never carry shopping bags by the hand handles - if they only have these, I need to get the bag up on my shoulder.

Mind you, I get my shopping delivered.

JaninaDuszejko · 17/07/2024 17:44

IKea big blue bags have double handles. I you'r got arthris in your hands carrying bags can be painful.

Yes they were large long-lasting ones, not standard plastic bags. Good to know the Co-op are maintaining standards 😁

Maybe they should do two types because yeah I can see long handles being a right pain in the arse when your carrying it normally. I’d probably end up putting my foot in it or something and face planting.

No I do usually. I just forgot that day. Hence why I was surprised about the change. It may not be that recent.

I think it’s pure cost cutting and I’m with you OP! Love the shoulder handles and I will now treasure my older ones with the long handles.

see also how they used to be massively thicker and bigger and now are all papery.

Destiny123 · 17/07/2024 17:47

The only lidl ones I've had with 2 handle choices were Spanish. They were cool so I bought them home as my default bag

ThePoshUns · 17/07/2024 17:55

You're kidding, I love the shoulder straps. Means I can carry 4 bags from the car to kitchen in one go.
So annoying

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/07/2024 17:57

Why not get your own bags? I have 2 very heavy cotton shopping bags with broad, thick fabric handles that are very comfortable over your shoulder. One came from Waterstones, the other from a holiday somewhere. I’ve had them for years, still fine, and they’re washable, too.

I would buy a trolley, life will be so much easier

TheTripThatWasnt · 17/07/2024 18:13

I'm with you OP. It's the thing that makes (made) Lidl bags better than any other supermarket - they're always the ones I grab from the pile at home for going shopping with.

I have a longstanding injury in the backs of both hands, and can't carry heavy bags from the till to the car by gripping them, so the ability to put them on my shoulders is much needed (and I don't every shop with a trolley thanks to Lidl having nice big baskets on wheels so I don't need to use a trolley and never have a coin with me to unlock one anyway!).

Of course in the grand scheme of things it's not a massive deal. But it's the little things that make life easier.

Persiancouscous · 17/07/2024 18:17

Shopping trolley? My mum loved hers.

You can get way more into 2 Lidl shoulder bags than one of those! Plus that doesn't fold up small enough to live in your handbag for spontaneous shopping visits.

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/07/2024 18:33

Primark do shoulder bags at their tills. They might work for you.

sadabouti · 17/07/2024 20:53

I am a man. I love Lidl. I have big hands though and hadn't realised they were shoulder straps 😂. I thought they were man sized handles, useful when you've got 40kg and four inches of shopping poking out the top. It pulls in nice and tight with the big man handles when you're lifting up two such bags at once on each side 😂. I'm thinking after the big shop with your 10% voucher 😂.

sadabouti · 17/07/2024 20:55

My point is a man wouldn't have sacrificed this advantage. It must have been an androgynous bean counter.

catscalledbeanz · 17/07/2024 21:01

I love the long handles! I too am disappointed

Motherhubbardscupboard · 17/07/2024 21:07

I'm with you OP, I love them. I have one Lidl bag and one from a French supermarket that also has shoulder handles, and they're my favourite bags for life.
