Royal Children - Time for State school?

microplastic · 17/07/2024 15:45

Should the Royal Family children be educated in state schools? Why do they get to attend private schools on taxpayers money? Is this something the Labour government could push for?

Do we actually pay… doesn’t the Dutchy pay presumably for their schooling if
they are of that part of the line. Id hazard a guess Charles would of used the Dutchy to pay for both Williams and Harry’s children when he was Prince rather then king (had harrry had school age children at the time)

Presumably Harry from his income will pay for his children abroad.

The sisters (Andrew’s daughters) will pay for their childrens via their jobs/their husband.

The whole history of how the Duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster came to own so much land and solely benefit the Monarch and the heir is not a democratic history.

serialcatbuyer · 17/07/2024 17:12

I don't understand why the english are so disrespectful to the royal family. Of course not

Hankunamatata · 17/07/2024 17:13

I may be wrong but I dont think l the taxes pay for royal children's school fees. It's their own investments and income I believe

artandtalk · 17/07/2024 17:13

And where did the Duchy of Cornwall money come from? They didn’t earn it. There’s a strong argument that every single thing they own belongs to us really.

And totally agree with the PP who said that a state boarding school would be totally doable.

Yes.

The op isn’t English and you can see it’s not the majority just a tiny minority and I suspect that’s due to resentment and envy over the privalge.

Sorry don't understand. Do you mean the UK doesn't have a democratically elected PM?

No, I mean that on the whole they aren’t state school educated.

florasl · 17/07/2024 17:15

@llamajohn the MOD (aka the taxpayer) pay up to 90% of school fees, most places provide a bursary for the remaining 10% that we looked at. You don’t have to be posted overseas, just reasonably expect that you might be posted more than 50 miles away in the next four years, as postings are 2/3 years it’s reasonably likely for most people.

Why not? We've had threads heavily debating the VAT, with posters saying that private school parents are snobs. Surely the UK state school system is good enough for the royal family. It's good enough for the rest of us.

That's the problem

At the moment it's not good enough for my cat

Cheetahcubs · 17/07/2024 17:16

What a silly thread! I think OP is trying to wind people up and it’s working!

Well it doesn’t belong to us, no matter how much you want it to, and they can send their kids any where they please. Their money, their kids, their choice,

They currently are, if you check out the current cabinet for example and the PM was state educated. However I take your point that in the past, many politicians have been privately educated.

Precipice · 17/07/2024 15:47

There shouldn't be "royal" children at all. The UK should become a democracy.

The UK is a democracy. I think you mean a republic.

Cheetahcubs · 17/07/2024 17:19

Do the Starmer sprogs go to a state school? Curious

Janieforever · 17/07/2024 17:19

LiterallyOnFire · 17/07/2024 17:09

I think a village school and then state boarding are eminently doable.

So. What does it matter what you think or if it’s doable. It’s their choice where they send their kids.

I want a republic. I don't envy the royal family, I wouldn't want to live my life like that but I oppose their inherited position and status.

GoFigure235 · 17/07/2024 17:20

I couldn't be bothered with all the fuss that would come from having the Royal children at school with my children, so would definitely want to avoid this if possible.

I imagine it's easier at a private school to "police" parent and pupil behaviour and make all the parents sign NDAs and stuff so that the Royal children have privacy at school and are treated like normal children. Much harder to do this at a state school where you can't kick people out if they leak stuff to the press.

It shouldn't be so very ludicrous that state education is good enough for the ruling family, though, should it?

Even if they had a state education until 8 or 11, it would broaden their horizons.

LiterallyOnFire · 17/07/2024 17:21

So. What does it matter what you think or if it’s doable. It’s their choice where they send their kids.

Yes and no.

They're not a private family.

It's odd that we allow anybody involved in ruling over us to completely eschew any element of state education.

DeadlyKnightshade · 17/07/2024 17:22

@microplastic
I think you will find security at school for the royal children would cost more than their private education. There would need to be at least one security agent per child at any one time and that likely to be a fair bit more expensive than the school fees. Not ideal for the other pupils either.

LiterallyOnFire · 17/07/2024 17:23

You'd think OP had suggested sending the royal children up chimneys by the reaction she's getting (from some). 🤷🏼‍♀️

What’s ludicrous is thinking you should get a say on where any parent sends their kids.

What about a democratically elected head of state?

Like Trump or Biden?
