To order from Tesco when she lives really close by?

Do you think the delivery driver would judge you for getting your shopping delivered if you live really close - 300 meters - from the shop?

My mother is really unwell right now, using a frame to walk and adjusting to being told she has a life long illness which will have huge implications along with all the medication that comes with it. She also can't currently drive.

I've told her to get the shopping delivered but she is so concerned about what the driver will think. So she is just waiting until one of her sister offers. I can't do it, I live 3 hours away, she's just spent the last two weeks with me. But she wanted to go home to sort out a few bits.

TBH if I didn't have a car I'd probably pay for a weekly shop to be delivered anyway instead of trying to carry it home or do two shops

YABU - that is too close to get delivery
YANBU - get the delivery

I do this all the time. Live opposite a huge Sainsbury's but when I'm doing a full shop I can't carry it all so I either drive or get it delivered. Some times the drivers make a little joke but ultimately they don't care at all!

Investinmyself · 17/07/2024 11:26

Is there an Iceland? They do a special offer 10% off on Tues for pensioners and my mum has found the drivers very kind and considerate, they put it in her kitchen. If not I’d do Tesco they won’t care one jot.

mondaytosunday · 17/07/2024 11:29

Driver couldn't care less! In fact if everyone felt that way (try couldn't order as live close by) many drivers would not have a job!
It's not just distance, it's time, convenience, and in your mother's case necessity.

Phoebefail · 17/07/2024 11:31

My experience of Sainsbury's, drivers will not come into the house, puts a crate on floor, customer has to pick up individual items from crate and transfer to own box to take it to kitchen.
Driver stands by van having a smoke or leans on door post watching.
I thought this was standard.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 17/07/2024 11:37

@Phoebefail I’ve ordered from them all and they have always asked me where I want the shopping and offered to bring them into the kitchen.
There’s usually a “notes” section when ordering - I assumed that it was for things like please bring into kitchen.
I’ve never seen a supermarket delivery driver smoking and have had weekly deliveries for 15+ years.

Phoebefail · 17/07/2024 11:42

@SonicTheHodgeheg Will Sainsbugs put shopping into bags? loose items in crate can be a nuisance. I have a bad back so bending over to floor level is not much of a help for me.

ChunkyChips76 · 17/07/2024 11:43

Driver wouldn't give a toss but surely someone could do her shopping for her?!

Sheepadoo · 17/07/2024 11:46

As others have said driver won’t care, I used to regularly order years ago from a Tesco that was ridiculously close, 2 min walk if that. The most that ever got said was along the lines of it being an easy/quick drop off.

Peonies12 · 17/07/2024 11:48

Why would you even think not to? We can practically see a massive Tesco from our house and I sometimes get a delivery - hate shopping. Interestingly the delivery sometimes comes from a store further away! As shows on bank statement

unsync · 17/07/2024 12:08

I have never had Tesco deliver, but is there not a notes section? With Ocado you can leave instructions. If so you could write that you need assistance bringing the shopping indoors as client is unwell. I've always found delivery staff to be very helpful.

YouJustDoYou · 17/07/2024 12:10

Who cares what anyone might think, if your mum needs it just do it op. I used to live very close to asda but in the early days my ds was an utter nightmare toddler (I had 2 under2.5), think a screamer/runner etc, so online shopping saved me. Just do it.

InvestinITMN · 17/07/2024 16:21

has op clarified where she lives where Tesco is the only shop that delivers?

I just take the whole crate into the kitchen, empty it, return it, get the next one.

SherbetSweeties · 17/07/2024 18:05

It won’t come from that shop. It’ll come from a where house.

PeloMom · 17/07/2024 18:08

It’s not like they go to her closest store to get the goods. They go to a warehouse who knows where. Not that it matters. It’s the drivers job even if it’s right across the road from the store

cestlavielife · 17/07/2024 18:09

The delivery shop probably comes from a central warehouse not the local. Tesco does not care neither should you. Anyone can order delivery fir any reason or none

nokidshere · 17/07/2024 18:41

Will she be able to take the shopping in though? The driver will just plonk the box onto her mat and watch her struggle to transfer it.

They will take into the kitchen if she asks them to. I've never had a single, delivery person from any of the stores refuse to do this. At tescos you can say in advance on the notes section that you will need help with the shopping and need it in the kitchen.

They won't "watch". They'll go back to the van and drive off. Usually. They have a schedule to stick to, they are monitored, they don't get paid a lot, and they usually would like to keep their job.

Not if they are asked to help/bring it in.

pontipinemum · 17/07/2024 09:33

Thanks, everyone is saying pretty much what I've said to her. The driver won't care and if they do so what! But I really don't think they will.

Tesco is the only one that deliver in her town.

Edited

My mum would worry about this she would really work herself up into a tizz, I don't know why they are like this.

Hopefully you can get something sorted where she won't care or at least accept that the drivers won't care.
