To have taken today off sick?

Worrying my managers will think I was just out last night - I wasn’t!

Spent all day yesterday in bed, no obvious weird symptoms, just extreme fatigue and joint pain. Fell asleep about 9pm last night, woke up at 5am bed soaked (sweaty), horrendous headache and dizziness. Took two paracetomal and fell back asleep. Rang work and told them no way was I managing in, something’s obviously wrong but not sure what.

I woke up again about half an hour ago and feel slightly better, I’ve managed to eat something but still shivery and knackered.

I work in healthcare - in a very specialised role. I’ve spoken to my clinical lead who said to get well soon but staff sickness is looked down on, and I don’t want to make a name for myself. I’m on probation, I’m about a third through (six months, can be extended).

WIU to take the day off?

No - you're obviously ill.
Sounds like something I started 2 weeks ago, and I'm still not completely better - I think it was probably covid which is spiking again at the moment.

TappyGilmore · 15/07/2024 11:03

No, it sounds like you were genuinely unwell.

You must have been there about two months? Is this your first sick day? If so, I wouldn’t worry. If you’ve had more than that in a two month period then yes it is going to start looking a bit concerning, but ultimately if you’re sick then you’re sick.

OrwellianTimes · 15/07/2024 11:03

You work in healthcare, you know you’ve got a flu like virus. Of course you should be taking the day off.

Jackiebrambles · 15/07/2024 11:04

You are ill! I had something similar after having covid a year or so ago. I put it down to post viral stuff but I was exhausted and night sweats!

LuckysDadsHat · 15/07/2024 11:07

This is exactly how my current covid infection started, the same symptoms. I have had a week off so far and just been signed off for another week.

Catza · 15/07/2024 11:07

It doesn't matter what your manager thinks, they have no right to question employees who call in sick unless it is a certain number of "episodes" in a period which will trigger a review. A review is also not the end of the world as it is meant to happen to help the employee manage their health better and not as an excuse to sack them.
What would they rather? You show up for work and infect your patients and colleagues with the same bug just to keep their "stats" up?

FiveTreeHill · 15/07/2024 11:16

Yeah this is exactly how I felt with covid recently

You are ill, you have a flu like virus. You shouldn't be going into work in a heslthcare environment with flu/covid and regardless I doubt you could perform your job properly today

cloudy477654 · 15/07/2024 11:24

No you couldn't have worked in that state and could have made other people sick too. If you get made to feel bad for this then your employer is very unreasonable

YOYOK · 15/07/2024 11:25

You can’t help being unwell.
It is important to rest and take care of your own health. There is only one of you.

It is yes, I did pass out a few weeks from low blood pressure (medication related) but work told me that wasn’t counted as a sick day as they sent me to urgent care. I’ve never felt so tired, I can’t get out of bloody bed.

I tested positive for covid this morning and sounds exactly like how I felt. Have you done a test? I had to do tests for a couple of days before it started showing positive!

Livingtothefull · 15/07/2024 12:24

You are right to take the day off as you are not well enough to be working. Any reasonable employer will not care about the odd sick day; only any concerning sick leave patterns. It would be a very unreasonable manager who made a fuss about one sick day that happened to fall on a Monday - a whole string of Monday sick days might be a different issue.

Don't worry about what your manager 'might' think, just take the time you need & focus on getting well.

PregnantWithHorrors · 15/07/2024 12:49

You're too ill to go in, so no. The timing is unfortunate but that doesn't change the facts here.

Also it sounds like there's a reasonable chance you wont be well tomorrow either. The longer you're off, the less it'll look like a hangover.

PiggieWig · 15/07/2024 12:54

You’re sick. That’s what sick leave is for. It sounds like some kind of virus, and no-one would thank you for sharing it with the department and patients.
Take care of yourself and do what you need to to get better. It might be that you need a few more days off. I was off for a week with Covid- I was still testing positive and really unwell at the 4/5 day mark.

veritusverity · 15/07/2024 14:48

Sounds like covid. I started with extreme fatigue, slept for 14 hours straight (normally average 6), when I woke my joints (ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows etc) ached, and were so stiff, it was as if I'd run a marathon without any training before hand. Eventually took a covid test and it came up positive in nano seconds.

feelreallyguilty · 15/07/2024 14:49

I don’t know what it is. I’ve now got fever, bloody diarrhea, nausea and fatigue. Not sure I’ll manage work tomorrow either tbh.

OP posts:
veritusverity · 15/07/2024 14:53

I think this new strain of covid goes for the joints, as friends who have had it, have said the same, one of my work colleagues could barely mover her neck for 48 hrs, she thought she'd just slept awkwardly until she started running a temperature. (She likened her neck pain to whiplash), she struggled to use her hands too, as her fingers were really stiff, and painful.

If your diarrhoea is actually bloody (rather than you using bloody as an annoyance) then it's possible you have ecoli, i think you should probably ring your GP surgery and see if you can have a telephone appointment.

Justhereforaibu1 · 15/07/2024 14:57

Sounds horrible hope you feel better soon. You definitely shouldn't feel bad about being off!

gleefulstar · 15/07/2024 14:59

That's just how I've been with Covid. Especially the shivers, sweats, headache and diarrhoea

Literally unfortunately. GP surgery told me to ring 111, 111 said bed and GP will ring tomorrow. I’ve had it before where it was ‘just’ a pile that had burst or something like that so not massively alarmed.

If you’re sick, you’re sick.

as long as you aren’t flaky and unprofessional when at work I can’t see why it would be an issue.

CherrySocks · 15/07/2024 15:05

Personally I don't think you should go in tomorrow either.
You might spread a virus amongst the staff and patients.

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 15/07/2024 15:16

Another one saying that your symptoms sound like what I had when I tested positive for covid a few weeks ago. I've never been as lethargic in my life. I had to take a full week off work, I was still tired on my return.

You were right to phone in sick. Get well soon.

feelreallyguilty · 15/07/2024 19:17

Not going in tomorrow, haven’t really moved from bed all day.
