For thinking baby names are getting silly

Hi everyone,

Recently read through a thread with OP who wanted to name her child something completely ridiculous.

I have noticed a lot of threads with the same comments of very odd baby names, think things Like Spartacus or Amicablalette. For some reason this now seems to be the norm.

It seems like people are now either trying to make their normal child sound like a WW2 veteran by naming them Albert or Rodney or the lord or lady of the manner with names like Tarquin or Agatha.

Is it just me or do some of these names not look ridiculous. I know a child at a local nursery with working class parents called Horatio.

I can't imagine naming my children anything other than something normal so that when they finally go for a job interview their names appear professional and easy to read/pronounce.

Are there a list of normal Girls/Boys names you can give me! And does anyone else agree with me?!

AIBU?

I was in the waiting area at my GP practice sometime last year and on the screens which call up the patient name and room to go to, the name Angel-Demin-Blu (surname) came up. Could hear a few patients near me thinking "poor kid".

Couldn't tell what gender the kid was as had long blonde unkempt hair and wasn't wearing anything obvious to determine the gender.

Edenmum2 · 14/07/2024 09:39

Yeah funnily enough when I named my child my first thought wasn't 'how will this look in a job interview'...

Ruby is a gemstone/mineral, there are lots of such names, e.g Pearl, Beryl, Jade, Amber and more recently Emerald.

Edited

Exactly. Not sure why one would be sad over a child being named that.

What is a “chav” name and what makes it one?

Not being funny, I don’t know what the rules are for what makes a name “chavvy”.

I think it points out the snobs more than the chavs here…

CouncilEstate · 14/07/2024 09:40

yabu

I’m from a middle class background, but I married a working class man, and we live on a council estate.
I did English at University, am I not allowed to use classic literary names?
What’s wrong with me using names like Horatio?
Or do I need to stick to a list of names you deem to fit for my station. Probably full of stereotype names like Bailey and Jayden etc.

Your ignorance is astounding.

Looking for a girl name and actually love Emerald - thanks for reminding me of that one!

I'm a primary school supply teacher, and meet thousands of children through a year, and I've heard them all.
I actually did meet a little Agatha earlier this week! It was the first time I'd encountered that name.
I have noticed that younger kids (let's say under 8s) with these traditionally old fashioned names tend to be either black or eastern European first generation kids.

I'm another one who loves Horatio wanted it for ds but dh wasn't keen many says ds has a posh name (Conrad) for me its pretty normal. @someonethatyoulovetoomuch Hector is a brilliant name I love it great choice.

I love names and I love the changes in name fashion.

The only one that has surprised me recently was my friends granddaughter she is named Stephanie. Normal name but I don't recall ever meeting a baby Stephanie.

Aww Conrad was our name if our daughter had been a boy! Love it.

But isn’t it a massive coincidence that both this child’s parents have the same name.. ?

😀 Clearly it was why they fell in love…

I’m surprised no one has thought of changing Lesley to Lesleigh.

Auburngal · 14/07/2024 09:46

Parents who give their children unique spellings of normal names, don't realise that they are giving themselves and the child a lifetime of correcting people how to spell their names. I have that problem with my surname which obviously can't be changed - bar deed poll which I don't want to upset my parents

There is a girl where I live and her name is Kateland - pronounced as Caitlyn.

Then get upset when their friends with proper and common ways of spelling their name can get keyrings and other things with their name (and spelling) on them and leaving the child upset. I know this has been happening for years as had friends with standard spelling, but rare names and missed out.

Naming kids after current celebrities is a no no too as by the time the kid goes to school, that celeb may not be in the limelight.

pointlessopportunity · 14/07/2024 09:48

What about names ending in den or dene for a girl?

Jayden
Tayden
Oakden
Brayden

Those are normal names.

I thought you were talking about those who call their child - Dusty, Peaches, Wave etc etc.

Agatha is a normal name. Rodney is a normal name, Horatio is a normal name!
This post is just uncessarily mean

TBF all those names are equally marmite. I have friends called Dusty, Agatha and Rodney and all hate their names.
You would have to be some character to be able to pull off Horatio.

I grew up with lots of Stevens.

A friend of mine is a Steven and known him since we were in primary school in the 90s.

There were in my school too but it was quite unusual circa 2010.

I read an article recently about Apple Paltrow (or Martin) and how it was considered wacky to name your child after a fruit. They then mentioned in the Victorian era it was considered wacky to name your child after a flower, so Iris, Daisy, Rose etc.

I think the name Wren is weird but does seem to be popular on here.

Basically each to their own...

I think silly names for children have been around for quite a while. I dislike the craze for silly spellings of a name.

When I was born in the 50's my parents wanted to call me Larraine. Not allowed said the registrar!
