For thinking baby names are getting silly

Hi everyone,

Recently read through a thread with OP who wanted to name her child something completely ridiculous.

I have noticed a lot of threads with the same comments of very odd baby names, think things Like Spartacus or Amicablalette. For some reason this now seems to be the norm.

It seems like people are now either trying to make their normal child sound like a WW2 veteran by naming them Albert or Rodney or the lord or lady of the manner with names like Tarquin or Agatha.

Is it just me or do some of these names not look ridiculous. I know a child at a local nursery with working class parents called Horatio.

I can't imagine naming my children anything other than something normal so that when they finally go for a job interview their names appear professional and easy to read/pronounce.

Are there a list of normal Girls/Boys names you can give me! And does anyone else agree with me?!

AIBU?

*manor. If you’re going to be bitchy about a baby’s name at least check your spelling.

AnnaL94 · 13/07/2024 23:33

I know a child at a local nursery with working class parents called Horatio.

Are Horatio’s only allowed to have middle or upper class parents?

Kokomjolk · 13/07/2024 23:34

Some people are just joking to be fair.

Also what is 'normal' does change over time. Old fashioned names do come back into fashion.

Not to mention with globalisation and increased diversity the range of names used has expanded a lot.

splatmouse · 13/07/2024 23:35

Hmm, Amicabliaba 🤔 I quite like it. Ah-mick-ah-blee-ah-ba

Like Spartacus is definitely a joke.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 13/07/2024 23:38

Why is this your problem tho - I can’t see how this affects you, did you just want to have a go at names you find silly? I have two children who have names that are not common - one is a musical reference. Why might that bother you - they are not
your children….

Didimum · 13/07/2024 23:38

Times change. You need to change with them or remain perpetually grumpy, I guess.

P.S The working-class Horatio comment was embarrassing on your part.

BuffaloCauliflower · 13/07/2024 23:39

Horatio is a great name.

Name trends evolve. Before the 70s Jason was considered a ‘posh’ name. Karen was a new modern name at one point. There were no Archie’s at my school in the 90s, now you’ll find a couple in most primary schools. Unless someone’s proposing a name like Phlegm or Buttcrack I wouldn’t worry too much.

If a Spartacus turned up in my kids class I probably wouldn’t give it more than two thoughts though!

ElsaLion · 13/07/2024 23:41

I agree OP, the worst one being that woman who appeared in the tabloids years ago for wanting to name her daughter 'Clamidia' 🤢

Hermittrismegistus · 13/07/2024 23:41

We live in a country full of with people from various cultures and countries. What exactly counts as a normal name anymore?

5128gap · 13/07/2024 23:41

YABU about Albert and Rodney. Nothing ridiculous about them. Perfectly ordinary names that have come round again in the cycle. Names seem to skip a couple of generations. So the baby Mables and Alberts of today should be calling their babies Brenda, Shirley, Trevor and Bernard if my calculations are right. Then next generation will be Sharon, Debbie, Steve and Darren again.

BadeballSkihipto · 13/07/2024 23:42

Think good thoughts.

SanMarzano · 13/07/2024 23:44

Are people seriously pretending no one would raise an eyebrow at Horatio? Classic AIBU 🙄 I’m very middle class and I’d find it pretentious as fuck if a friend named their child Horatio!

You’re right though OP people are definitely becoming less conservative with name choices over time, especially for girls. I guess an easy list of very timeless names is past monarchs + consorts?

Wentie · 13/07/2024 23:52

I agree but what we call “normal” names aren’t normal anymore. There are no Lucy’s, Emily, James or Thomas in my DC class

its Romeo, Roman, India and Willow 🤷‍♀️

46mumof6 · 13/07/2024 23:53

I love the name Horatio but my husband hates it, I'm not middle class at all!!

As long as the child is not called names like Hitler or Crapbag let them get on with it. I think some names people use are awful but that's my opinion.

My kids were born late 90s early noughties and have normal names, I wish I had used the more unusual names I wanted but I didn't due to other people's opinions.

If I had my children would have been called
Casper
Oskar ( unusual spelling in the 90s)
Tuesday
Storm
Tate
Fabian

Bellsandthistle · 13/07/2024 23:56

Well, if you’re on the Baby Names threads, you’re going to encounter a lot of people who are looking for names that are more unique than the “normal names” 🙄 you speak of.

Loads of kids with the names on your first list in my area.
@bulbarsaurus if you want 'normal' in the traditional UK sense then maybe stick to biblical names or names which have local origin. I prefer more traditional names myself.

MrsALambert · 14/07/2024 00:04

What’s wrong with Albert?

Previousreligion · 14/07/2024 00:07

Names have a 100 year cycle ish so it's not surprising there are lots of Audrey and Albies around. I think they're lovely.

I actually don't mind Horatio either.

1980s "normal" names will come back in to fashion again one day.

OkPedro · 14/07/2024 00:07

Oh dear op you have offended the ones who gave their children silly names 😬😆

You are aware that name trends go in a cycle?

Your first list were very 80s and 90s names so of course there are less in classes now.
For the same reason nobody is calling babies Gary or Sharon at the moment.

I sort of agree…I also know a Horatio but his name suits him.

It’s hard for me to understand what the thought process was with some of the kids names I’m aware of locally; Atlas, Pebbles, Bunni, Dusty, Kobi-Bear, Bing, Venice, Buster etc. It just seems that it’s been more important for them to have a “unique” name and “be the only one in the class” than them thinking about what it might be like saddled with such a name.
