to be put off by this with potential date?

Someone from OLD who I'm meant to meet for the first time Monday, have only spoken to them on the app so unsure what they sound like.

They say 'like' after every single sentence. It's a regional thing, I'm aware, I do it myself sometimes.

However this man does it constantly.
'yeah my evening was good like', "yeah I enjoy my job like', 'the film was alright like' , 'yeah I'll probably go there like'.

I mean every single sentence.
Would this put you off?

@cigarette999 it would put me off BUT I wouldn't go on a date without a phone call first. You can learn a lot (but not everything, of course) about someone from their voice.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 13/07/2024 18:22

If it’s annoying you now before even meeting then I wouldn’t bother. It’ll drive you mad.

Clichetastic · 13/07/2024 18:22

It would put me off massively and make me think they were a bit thick.

SouthLondonMum22 · 13/07/2024 18:23

Try at least a phone call first. They maybe type that way but not actually speak that way or at least, not as much.

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 13/07/2024 18:23

I’m afraid it would drive me insane. But maybe he writes it more than he says it…..

BobbyBiscuits · 13/07/2024 18:24

Funnily enough this type of use of 'like' would put me off a lot less than the American version. Which just seems to be peppering sentences with it so liberally that's it's every second word. I heard that a lot in the states and I couldn't bear it. This sounds a bit annoying, but not a deal breaker if he's lovely in other ways.

Isseywith3witchycats · 13/07/2024 18:24

That would drive me mad after about ten minutes maybe fix the date and if he does it in real life mention do you know you add like to every sentence will be a test of wether he dosent realise hes doing it and can change or if its deeply entrenched in his speech pattern

Sagarmatha · 13/07/2024 18:25

So he's typing the word like into every message he sends you?

That's bizarre!!!

Would put me off 💯

Arlanymor · 13/07/2024 18:25

Why does it matter if it would put other people off? It’s your dating life, would it put you off? And it seems to?

I think we all have factors that make us less attracted to people. And those factors are all different, what puts me off probably wouldn’t be the same as what puts you off. (I hate lovebombing, people calling me their partner or girlfriend on the first date - happened to me twice recently, stop it!)

IwillNOTplayfastandloosewithpublicfinances · 13/07/2024 18:25

Yes I couldn’t be doing with it.,

Olika · 13/07/2024 18:26

I did online dating for years before meeting DH (online) and I think you should have a phone call with any man before meeting them face to face. This gives you an idea if you actually want to meet him as at least for me I found lots of men I got along on chat an absolute no when I spoke with them.

PashaMinaMio · 13/07/2024 18:26

No no no!
Yuk.

hattie43 · 13/07/2024 18:30

Nope not for me , I'm a speech snob

XChrome · 13/07/2024 18:48

Yes it would put me off. It makes people sound moronic. It would drive me batty having to listen to it.

Rfthyhuj · 13/07/2024 18:50

I assume he’s a geordie?

That is just how we talk.

I agree. That version is worse. The; "So, like, I went out last night and like, met this like, really cute guy." sort of thing.
🤢

That was my first thought too like! 😀

MercutiosFiddlestick · 13/07/2024 18:53

I’m guessing he’s from the north east? If so, I think it’s very much a regional thing. A relative does this. I find it endearing!

Berlinlover · 13/07/2024 18:53

I find it really strange that he writes it. I would find it very off putting.

cigarette999 · 13/07/2024 18:53

Nope, Scouser :)

Bearybasket · 13/07/2024 18:53

I don’t mind it when people are actually speaking but it would be off putting to me that he types that way!
Tho my nose is bothering me whether he’s a geordie or from fife Grin

Basilsage · 13/07/2024 18:54

South Wales do that, and all, like

Bearybasket · 13/07/2024 18:54

Nvm I was wrong on both counts!

maggiemuff · 13/07/2024 18:57

Northern Irish say like a lot at the end of a sentence. But if I was texting or emailing I wouldn't type it.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 13/07/2024 18:57

That happens in big lumps if Ireland as well, like. I wouldn't be a huge fan but if he's lovely otherwise, I could live with it (and would probably end up doing it myself).
