Losing my hair - is a headscarf cultural appropriation.

I recently had a gastric bypass and I’m affected by hair thinning which I knew could be one of the side effects. Currently I am not thinning evenly but in patches and I have gone from really thick long hair to one side being a bit straggly especially at the temple. So I got out my scarves, had a play around, and generally had problems with the scarves falling off. Meanwhile I saw suggested the use of a Tichel, a type of pre sewn, pre fitted scarf with a band to stop if moving off your hairline. The Jewish lady recommending it on Instagram said that it was ok for anyone to wear one. I bought one, it’s great. Apart from the reaction of my friends, relatives and daughter who say that wearing a headscarf ( not solely a tichel) is culturally insensitive, being that I am white and non-religious. When you Google these things some people say it is culturally insensitive and others say it isn’t.

It's fine. Wear what you want and what makes you feel comfortable

mitogoshi · 09/07/2024 15:38

It's fine to wear a head scarf! Both my grandmothers wore them, was quite normal here in the uk to keep your hair in place in the wind! Also remember the plastic bonnets! Honestly this cultural appropriation has gone way too far, as long as you aren't making a joke out of another culture's clothing it's fine to wear different attire

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 09/07/2024 15:38

Many women from many cultures wear headscarves no it’s not appropriation.

MereDintofPandiculation · 09/07/2024 15:40

If it’s cultural appropriation, where does that put the late Queen?

Chersfrozenface · 09/07/2024 15:41

Look at the wide variety of head coverings women wear after hair loss because of chemotherapy.

Pick some you like and will feel comfortable wearing. Ignore any comments.

Chocolately · 09/07/2024 15:41

That's ridiculous. We all wear parkas in the winter, are we offending eskimos?

Anywherebuthere · 09/07/2024 15:42

It isnt cultural appropriation. Ignore anyone that says it is.

People have worn a variety of headscarves for years and years for many different reasons.

You don't owe anyone an explanation either.

vodkaredbullgirl · 09/07/2024 15:43

🤔

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 09/07/2024 15:43

"Cultural appropriation" is an American concept designed to give the permanently irritated something more to complain about.

Wear what you please. It's a free country.

Evenstar · 09/07/2024 15:44

I think if a Jewish lady said it was fine and not inappropriate, you shouldn’t worry about it.

EffortlesslyInelegant · 09/07/2024 15:44

You again? Stop feeding it people.

Lifeisamysterytome · 09/07/2024 15:44

I have a medical condition that means I have had virtually no hair for quire a few years now.
There are various Web sites that cater for people with hair loss. On these as well as wigs there are various head coverings such as snoods, caps and different types of head scarves. The models wearing these aren't of any particular culture or religion. There is also advice for different ways of tying scarves.
So it's perfectly ok for any one to wear a headscarf as far as I'm aware.

BIWI · 09/07/2024 15:45

Oh hello. You're back again?

JohnTheRevelator · 09/07/2024 15:45

I'm surprised you even had to ask this question! If you are losing your hair, what right does anyone have to judge you?

IncompleteSenten · 09/07/2024 15:45

No it is not.

People do not seem to understand what cultural appropriation actually is and why it is a problem and just fling the term about in complete ignorance, which creates issues dealing with the damaging effects of genuine cultural appropriation.

Oh is this the poster who links to her website selling headscarves!?

GoThatWay · 09/07/2024 15:48

Oh, you're back.

Birdthatswallowedaplate · 09/07/2024 15:49

My mum had alopecia when she was in her 20s and her hair never grew back. She has worn a scarf around her head since and is now in her 70s. It’s ridiculous to say it’s cultural appropriation. It’s a comfortable way of covering your head. Hope you find some scarves you like - I always find thought my mum looked great xx

vodkaredbullgirl · 09/07/2024 15:49

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks the OPs not real

qazxc · 09/07/2024 15:52

People wear head coverings or hair scarves for all sort of reasons, not necessarily religious or cultural. People with hair loss, people with sensory issues or people who just like the way they look. It's not cultural appropriation.

CharlotteRumpling · 09/07/2024 15:53

Adviceneeeeded · 09/07/2024 15:46

Yes, I think so.

AzureAnt · 09/07/2024 15:55

Tell them to sod off. Its not cultural appropriation and even if it was, its not illegal

cheezncrackers · 09/07/2024 15:57

Tell them you're channeling the Queen (Elizabeth II) who often wore a scarf over her hair.
