Losing my hair - is a headscarf cultural appropriation.

I recently had a gastric bypass and I’m affected by hair thinning which I knew could be one of the side effects. Currently I am not thinning evenly but in patches and I have gone from really thick long hair to one side being a bit straggly especially at the temple. So I got out my scarves, had a play around, and generally had problems with the scarves falling off. Meanwhile I saw suggested the use of a Tichel, a type of pre sewn, pre fitted scarf with a band to stop if moving off your hairline. The Jewish lady recommending it on Instagram said that it was ok for anyone to wear one. I bought one, it’s great. Apart from the reaction of my friends, relatives and daughter who say that wearing a headscarf ( not solely a tichel) is culturally insensitive, being that I am white and non-religious. When you Google these things some people say it is culturally insensitive and others say it isn’t.

Oh is this the poster who links to her website selling headscarves!?

Stick it to the PC brigade! Spend money in my shop!!! 😃

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 09/07/2024 16:05

@mitogoshi the plastic ones were rain mates. Not sure if you can still get them

greengreyblue · 09/07/2024 16:06

Headscarf’s are an item of clothing, not a religious symbol.

Crinklycrisp · 09/07/2024 16:09

Helenloveslee4eva · 09/07/2024 16:11

The queen was quite fond of a headscarf as were many of my northern aunties. Non of whom were Jewish or Muslim.
wear what you want !

muddyford · 09/07/2024 16:12

My mother used to wear one. So did the late Queen. The cultural appropriation may be the opposite way to which you are thinking.

JohnSt1 · 09/07/2024 16:12

The fact that headscarves have gone out of fashion doesn't mean you have to ask permission to wear one.

I'm not good at history, but if we just wore what was culturally British wouldn't we be running around naked and painting ourselves with woad?

I had hair loss from chemo. When you google chemo head wear the results often throw up muslim head scarves. I actually found these to be some of the best ones because they fitted firmly.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 09/07/2024 16:17

FFS women all over the world have worn headscarves for thousands of years including my own mum and nanna.
Unless you're wearing a hijab and actually blacking up, no, it's not offensive to anyone unless they are simple.

Nellieinthebarn · 09/07/2024 16:17

This is ridiculous. The late Queen wore a headscarf, it apparently protected her head when horse riding. My Nan wore a headscarf, all the women who worked in factories in the 1940s wore headscarves, it stopped their hair getting caught in the machinery and getting greasy. I wore a headscarf in the 70s (tied backwards though, didn't want to look like my Nan) Many women with hair loss, or no hair loss, wear headscarves every day, for many reasons. A square of cloth tied around the head does not belong to any culture or religion. Wear what you want.

greenpolarbear · 09/07/2024 16:19

Cultural appropriation is an invention. No one actually gets offended by it, they just get offended on imaginary people's behalf.

If anyone tries to bring it up with me I just shut it down by saying, "Do you see Irish people getting mad when the rest of the world appropriates St Patrick's Day? No, they drink with them."

Crinklycrisp · 09/07/2024 16:19

Choose one that matches your plimmies.

HungryLittleCrocodile · 09/07/2024 16:19

A headscarf cultural appropriation? Confused I've heard it all now! Of course it isn't! How on earth is it cultural appropriation?!

Chocolately · 09/07/2024 15:41

That's ridiculous. We all wear parkas in the winter, are we offending eskimos?

‘Eskimo’s’???

What is a plimmy?

summeroccupation · 09/07/2024 16:20

No.

Woman of all types, religions, ages, and races have been wearing headscarves for generations.

My Nana never set foot outside in bad weather without her headsquare, usually folded in half and tied firmly under her chin, just like the Queen.

Soontobe60 · 09/07/2024 16:20

That poster didn't say 'eskimo's,' they said 'eskimos.'

EinekleineKatze · 09/07/2024 16:21

Of course not.
Most cultures have worn headscarves at some point or other - some for religious reasons, some for practical reasons, some for cultural reasons, and so on.
I am Scottish and it was quite common for previous generations of women not to leave the house without a headscarf on! I also had a late friend with alopecia - she wore all manner of head scarves and hats, it was almost part of her personality.
Do what you need to do.

100% this. The people who are apparently offended are never offended IME and IMO. Like, the Asian people in my area don't give a fuck about England flags flying - OR the Union flag. It's just the woke white people who throw tantrums when they see them. 😆

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 09/07/2024 16:23

My grandma always wore a headsquare to keep her perm set. I wore one last week on holiday when I was sunbathing because it's more comfortable to lie down in than a hat.

greengreyblue · 09/07/2024 16:06

Headscarf’s are an item of clothing, not a religious symbol.

Hard agree. How else can I secure my hair when driving my MG down a country lane at speed?

Its a piece of fabric, not a way of life.

LostTheMarble · 09/07/2024 16:25

Wear whatever headscarf you want. Or use the hair from your hands for transplant for your head, win win.
