For being fucked off with all the threads about what people on benefits should and should not do?

Apparently not have babies OR go on holiday for starters.

What is it with this obsession with what other people less fortunate are doing? I find it absolutely ludicrous that the so called tax payers are more annoyed at vulnerable people claiming benefits than they are at what the rich are actually doing.

Why is it the spotlight is not on the 'rich' people who tax evade left, right and center meaning there is less in the pot.....what about MPs expenses???? What about non-doms?

I find it ludicrous that people actually think the problem lies with people on benefits when it is the rich who are the abhorrent party in this debacle.

FAQ · 11/04/2008 09:48

well I must confess I was going to start a post suggesting cheap (non-camping) ideas for where to go on holiday with the DS's in the summer holidays for a week.

But (yet another) thread about holidays/benefits/luxuries etc, has rather put me off

MegSophandEmma · 11/04/2008 09:48

Completely agree.

themoon66 · 11/04/2008 09:49

I reckon people do it because it's a lot easier to kick someone who is already down.

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 11/04/2008 09:49

start it anyway, FAQ - perhaps the narrow minded feckers MNers need to see how difficult things are, and how much people do scrimp and save to have the things that most people take for granted...

misdee · 11/04/2008 09:49

i agreee. am feeling very on here a lot lately.

lulumama · 11/04/2008 09:49

YANBU at all

judgey judgey judgey

far easier to point at feckless benefit cheats and single mums getting pregnant to get a free house, than to look at big faceless nom doms etc

FAQ, vast majority of mners would rather you went on holiday!

CountessDracula · 11/04/2008 09:50

If people would just worry about themselves and their lives instead of comparing themselves to people on benefits/rich people/non-doms etc then their lives would be much happier

WHO CARES what someone else has? It's what you have and making the most of that that counts.

I can't imagine sitting around feeling jealous of someone because they have more material wealth than me. Or because they are unfortunate enough to have to live on benefits and have scraped together enough for a week in a caravan in the pissing rain in Skegness.

Look to yourself, not others, for happiness and contentment.

Octothechildherder · 11/04/2008 09:50

I don't think it is the people who are genuinely claiming benefits that causes the irritation in the threads but the fraud - at both ends of the spectrum.

CountessDracula · 11/04/2008 09:50

oh and whinging about it to me smacks of "it's not FAAAAIRRRRRR WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH"

Take responsibility for your own life!

marina · 11/04/2008 09:50

FAQ, try the Youth Hostel Association. They are fantastic for families with small children.
I just ignore that sort of thread connie as themoon says, much more satisfying to kick someone who is already down

shabster · 11/04/2008 09:51

Well said my love. Up until 5 years ago both my DH and I worked full time. We paid vast amounts of tax and struggled to make ends meet. Then DH had an awful accident at work and now we live on benefits

We both hate it BUT I dislike it even more when everybody who relies on benefits are lumped together as a sponger group.

I do understand, because I am not stupid, that there are many people who abuse the system but not all of us.

Yes, we go on holiday every year. We scrimp and save and go without for 50 weeks every year. Penny pinching, shopping at Netto etc etc. The last time I had any new clothes was June, 2007.

We have paid our taxes and national insurance for 30 years EACH.

ppie · 11/04/2008 09:51

I think i deserve to be peed of with some, not all, claimants screwing me over for my hard earned money. I have no problem with my taxes going to legitatmate people requiring it, not at all, but when i see certain folks who blatantly flaunt their new cars, expensive holidays ect whilst moaning that they only get £xxxx amount from the goverment coz they cant be bothered getting a job, then yes its fair.

southeastastra · 11/04/2008 09:51

i'm still shocked that tony blair claimed back expenses for his tv licence

CountessDracula · 11/04/2008 09:51

Clearly every system is going to have its abusers.

MascaraOHara · 11/04/2008 09:52

Actually I think you'll find on the 'holidays' thread there is quite interesting discussion & debate going on talking about all aspects of who misses out due to benefit cheats, the governement, fat cat business men etc

I think you are being unreasonable to want to stop healthy, polite debate and conversation. not one person has been insulted personally.

Haven't read the 'babies' thread so can't comment.

but I think there are lots of healthy threads on lots of different topics where people voice their opinions without it turning into an arguement. what's wrong with that?

Octothechildherder · 11/04/2008 09:52

Yes totally - if MPs do it - why can't everyone else screw the system?

CountessDracula · 11/04/2008 09:53

who is trying to stop debate mascara??

beansmum · 11/04/2008 09:53

I'm going on holiday AGAIN this year. shocking I know. I'm going to sleep on my sister's floor for a week and do all the free things in london, and I will have to really save for the train tickets, but it is a holiday and I suppose I shouldn't expect the tax payer to fund it, maybe I'll stay at home, get fed up with ds and go slightly mad instead.

FAQ · 11/04/2008 09:54

I don't know, not sure I'm really up for any of the snide comments that may appear on it if I do....

After a good couple of days had an awful night last night and not woken up feeling too great

ok, not stopping the debate but hy not join in the debate.. I did raise the issue re. the government expenses etc.. why not join in rather than getting upset and starting another thread about being upset about the first?

the op metnioned that there is no spotlight on 'rich' people etc.. but in fact that has been mentioned

as an aside, tis very odd on MN at the moment.

Youcannotbeserious · 11/04/2008 09:56

I don't think it's about kicking people.

I just think a lot of people who pay tax don't feel rich by any stretch of the imagination.

I think it's totally wrong to assume that it's only people on benefits who have to scrimp and save.

IMHO, though, benefits should be better targetted....... (You are right that Non Doms don't pay tax but can still get all the benefits)

Though, of course, then no doubt someone would be on here moaning that they shouldn't be means tested or vetted for benefits.....

If you are genuinely in need of benefits, then I wouldn't worry about what anyone else says.

I've lost my job because of my pregnancy and will be on benefits for the first few months of my baby's life until I can get back on my feet, employment-wise. I don't lose a moments sleep about it

I hate fraud of any kind - benefit or corporate - but also detest the assumption that anyone on benefit is somehow a scrounger!

FAQ - start your thread. Ignore the ignorant feckers! You deserve a holiday and the self-righteous pompous buggers can sod off.

I am lucky enough that DH earns enough to enable me to stay at home with DD but it wasn't always like this. I grew up in a council house, with very little money and lots of debt, and lived there until I got married. I was extremely happy and had at least one holiday a year (camping ).
