To sell the house at a loss and move to Spain??

colachive · 09/07/2024 10:37

Absolutely sick to death of this weather. It’s currently sheeting it down in mid July. The house is dark and dingy because there’s no sunlight. I just don’t think we can cope.

we’re in the middle of a renovation so couldn’t sell the house for what we paid for it but we’re both feeling desperate just to get out of this country!!

OP posts:

Currently sat in my house in Leeds on my day off and looking out into dark skies and persistent rain. I'm currently washing my adult daughter's clothes which are caked in mud after she came home from 4 days working and camping at Silverstone - where it flooded on Friday night! This weather is so, so depressing. We both have Turkish citizenship and just had a conversation about moving there! I know exactly how you feel OP!!

Good point! I think this is it.

perhaps we just need a break from the relentless renovation / full-time work cycle. When you wait all year for the sun, saying to each other “it’ll all be so much easier in summer” only to get this, it’s so depressing.

we have been on Rightmove looking at rentals that have pools that are less pcm than our mortgage (2k per month - bought at the height of truss)

thank you Mumsnet for giving us a dose of reality, practicality and perspective!

Do you speak Spanish?

CraftyNavySeal · 09/07/2024 11:30

What about Australia? Might be easier on the visa front. You could also finish the reno and rent out your house

PerfectTravelTote · 09/07/2024 11:38

Don't sell at a loss. It's a knee jerk reaction to the awfulness of living in a house that's undergoing work. Finish the renovation.

You can't just up and move without visas anyway. Post brexit, these things take time and planning.

Finish the renovation and live in it for a while. If you still feel the same then make a plan.

Mmhmmn · 09/07/2024 11:40

Whereabouts are you? Could you just move a bit further south in this country? Spain is pretty tricky nowadays I think since Brexit

Maddy70 · 09/07/2024 11:42

YouveGotAFastCar · 09/07/2024 10:48

Ah, that's not good. You want a company with no Spanish office - that removes the work option above, as one of the requirements is that your company has no Spanish presence.

You'd need your employer to sponsor you to go. You can ask them the question, but they have to show that there is a need for you, specifically, which can't be filled by anyone within the EU or with the right to work there.

Strictly speaking, only one of you needs this, the other could go as a dependant, but there doesn't seem to be much in it for your employer unless one of you is indispensable. Tax levels are higher in Spain so it'll be more costly for your employer.

Edited

Not true. They could apply for a digital nomad visa. Providing you hit the income requirements

chilicrackers · 09/07/2024 11:45

I wouldn’t with the climate changes. I’m in northern Europe and the climate tourists started coming here last summer. This year there are even more. They want to get away from the heat, and they love the rain. So many of them here for this reason, it’s become like the new Benidorm.

It’s not that simple to up sticks and move to sunny Spain, not since Brexit. Book a cheap and cheerful all inclusive on the Costa Dorada instead.

Depends what passport you have doesn't it.? My brother could as he has an Irish passport

Gogogo12345 · 09/07/2024 11:50

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 09/07/2024 11:19

I would finish the reno, or at least everything needed to make is saleable. Consider a short term rental if the dust and mess is getting you down, or just book weekends away to get away from it.
I'd book a holiday somewhere hot asap.
I'd also look at staying in the UK, but perhaps in the south where it is substantially warmer and sunnier.

Lol seriously? It's been pissing down in Essex every since I go back into the country

Snowwhitedove · 09/07/2024 11:55

Yeah, it’s not much better in the south of the country ☹️

CactusMactus · 09/07/2024 12:00

Don't move to Spain... it's really too hot and quite dull.

stickygotstuck · 09/07/2024 12:04

What an odd thing to say. Dull? What, the whole of the country? You should see where I live! (UK)

Sawa75 · 09/07/2024 12:07

What about the British overseas territories if you have a desired profession. I lived in Bermuda under a work permit and it had beautiful weather and stunning sea views (left when starting a family to be closer to family support)

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 09/07/2024 12:08

Spain is SO hard to move to, OP. And I'm an EU citizen, got the passport.
My advice to you, if you are serious about this, is to join the brilliant Facebook group (run by a fabulous and knowledgable admin) Ladies Moving to Spain (even if you have a husband/partner, join this group. It's one of the very best ones I've come across). Natasha Horner is the admin and you can message her privately. She's really proactive and full of great advice.

I came so close to taking the plunge and I've done so much research the past couple of years. It CAN be done. But you'll definitely get your boots muddy while making that move. And honestly, don't try 'life between two countries'. It's a bit 'all or nothing': Leave the UK and live in Spain full on, full time. It's complicated enough going the smoothest route. Trying to live between Spain and UK can become a financial nightmare.

The reason I am not moving is that I realise the change is too great for my younger two children. It's just not the right time for me. Maybe later. It's such a fabulous country and the lifestyle can be beautiful if you get it right.

RobinEllacotStrike · 09/07/2024 12:10

It is a miserable summer. Last night I nearly put the heating on and I added an extra blanket to my bed - IN JULY!!

But I still prefer this misery to the unbearable heat and air conditioning of summer in Spain.

Plus my friends in Spain work, what to us Brits are, unimaginably long hours.

Noosnom · 09/07/2024 12:11

I hear you. I'm really struggling with the lack of sun and warmth.
Heatwaves aren't great but 25°, blue skies and less rain would be nice.

Ariela · 09/07/2024 12:15

Could you ask your company if you can work from the Barcelona office for a few weeks while the renovation is on?

Surprisedbuthappy · 09/07/2024 12:51

CactusMactus · 09/07/2024 12:00

Don't move to Spain... it's really too hot and quite dull.

What a ridiculous and ignorant response! Spain is a big country with different climates from north to south (plus the islands) and a rich history and culture(s). The entire country is not like the Benidorm strip FFS!

HotPipe · 11/07/2024 12:47

Arent the locals really unhappy in Spain especially in Barcelona, stomping through the streets demanding tourists go home. They say they cant afford homes for themselves. They already have 26 nations who can rock up and buy their homes, put pressure on resources with no question and push prices high - are you sure you want to live there - they will view you as the problem too? Plus youth unemployment in Spain is massive and water shortages blight the country.

Then their big neighbour France is on the verge of hard left policies - give it 6 months and it will kick off bigtime and loads will come south into Spain increasing the pressure and feelings of angst.

Stay put for now OP. If you crave some sun, have a little holiday. I recommend Croatia. Reassess once we have vision how these countries will cope over the next year.

Standupcitizen · 11/07/2024 12:53

I'm assuming you're fluent in Spanish?

stargirl1701 · 11/07/2024 12:58

Belize would be far simpler, OP.

mindutopia · 11/07/2024 13:00

Take a holiday to Spain. To a normal Spanish city or town, not a resort.

Got back a few weeks ago from Valencia. It was 28-35c every day. I’ve never been so grateful to step off the plane to a light rain and 14c in my life.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 11/07/2024 13:00

We're in Spain on holiday just now. Nice for a holiday but I couldn't bear the heat on a working day.

Ace56 · 11/07/2024 13:05

Move to the South of England. Yes it’s been raining and grey, but it’s not cold atm - 22 degrees today. I’m wfh in a vest top and shorts and most definitely have my summer duvet on my bed. Can’t believe people saying they’ve got their heating on still!

PontiacFirebird · 11/07/2024 13:07

People saying “ oh but the heat”… you know there is Spain and Spain?? It’s a huge country! Galicia rains more than Wales 😃 Different areas have totally different cultures and even languages too.
I don’t think I’d move to Barcelona but would definitely consider some parts.
