Help finding commutable places to Waterloo Station London

helpingDDfindaccomadation · 08/07/2024 19:51

Apologies for using AIBU, I wasn't sure where to post.

My 21 year old DD has secured a job near Waterloo Station. We have been looking at house/flat shares in the area but they are really expensive.

We are not from London. So have very little experience about what areas maybe more affordable, within commuting distance. I am guessing a direct tube/train maybe easier.

Any guidance is really appreciated. We plan to visit and explore areas over next few weeks, but not really sure where to start.

Thank you.

Depending on how far out you want to be you probably want to look at south western railway line as their trains predominantly go into Waterloo.

Places like fleet, Woking, Basingstoke but will also be lots much closer to London.

What’s your budget? Virtually the whole of London is commutable to Waterloo. Somewhere like Clapham Junction might be good, but you might need to be further out depending on budget.

jimmyhill · 08/07/2024 19:56

Look at the railway lines and tube lines heading away from Waterloo and search around stations along the line until you find somewhere you daughter can find.

A vast swathe of the southeast is served by Waterloo, lines down to the south coast and out via South West London as far as Reading.

Nursingadvice · 08/07/2024 19:56

Depends if she wants to be in London still or further out?

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/07/2024 19:57

Another trick is looking at South East London as some areas will have trains in to Charing Cross and those stop at Waterloo East - which is a little mainline station that is attached to Waterloo main station via a foot bridge.

South East London tends to be cheaper as it is not on the tube.

bryceQ · 08/07/2024 19:57

I mean I think up to an hour commute is fairly normal and that's basically most of London so it's really about her budget

Coroico97 · 08/07/2024 19:59

Clapham junction, Balham, Tooting Bec. All really great places. Could she find a flat share? Cheaper and more fun/sociable!

fishonabicycle · 08/07/2024 19:59

My son has just moved into a flat share in battersea near lavender Hill police station! It's an easy walk to Clapham Junction and loads of youngsters and shops/bars etc - he loves it!

helpingDDfindaccomadation · 08/07/2024 20:00

Sorry I should have been clearer. She would like to live in London.

She will have to go into a house share, which she is ok with (currently in student share in the north).

I am not sure about zones in London.

Ideally around £1000 PCM including bills. Not sure if that is possible.

Yes, south east London. Cheap and lots of students/graduates to share with. She may end up somewhere that looks a bit grimy at first (New cross, Deptford, Peckham) but the main thing is getting into town easily and meeting like-minded people.

waterrat · 08/07/2024 20:01

definitely look at SE London - much more affordable than SW London and london is easy to get around generally -

Brockley - forest hill - catford - crystal palace - anerly etc

waterrat · 08/07/2024 20:02

peckham is now gentrified - not so cheap but a great place to live.

helpingDDfindaccomadation · 08/07/2024 20:03

@fishonabicycle I will tell her to look around Clapham junction.

We have no idea about places. So just having some names of places to explore is helpful.

I'm not sure how much it would be these days but I lived in Earlsfield and loved it there 10 years ago. Relatively short train ride to Waterloo but small town feel, lovely restaurants and pubs/bars.

Thank you.

Look at the train lines into Waterloo and Waterloo East.
You also have the tube lines, both direct and ones that go very near ie London Bridge.

helpingDDfindaccomadation · 08/07/2024 20:05

All these suggestions are really helpful. Thank you.

We have only ever voted London for theatre day trips. It's hard to know where to start when you have no idea.

It will definitely be a house share.

Northern line:
Balham
Clapham
Tooting
south Wimbledon
Colliers wood

Victoria line (goes to Vauxhall near wayerloo)
Brixton and nearby SE areas that u can walk to tube

Train:
Clapham Junction
Earlsfiled
Wimbledon

TikehauLilly · 08/07/2024 20:07

And despite walking past Waterloo east everyday I forgot about it

They go to the SE so lots of places with no tube that will be great

notprincehamlet · 08/07/2024 20:08

Queen's Park? Stratford?

helpingDDfindaccomadation · 08/07/2024 20:08

@TikehauLilly thank you

Type Waterloo Station in Righmove and search for rental properties within a 10 mile radius, that should give you a good idea of locations and rental prices.

Tiswa · 08/07/2024 20:11

Wimbledon/Southfields/Earlsfoed and Putney are all very nice as well and should offer flatshares

moving too far out is going to get you into family suburbia and a lot less flatshares theirs areas would definitely have them

ohnoi · 08/07/2024 20:14

Earlsfield is really nice and 12 mins on the train
Kennington and Oval are a quick walk
Camberwell and Elephant and Castle probably slightly cheaper but lots of new flats popping up there
All of London is commutable to Waterloo
1000pcm for a flat share is absolutely achievable
Will she be out late etc? Things to consider if needing to get home when trains stop
(I live near Waterloo myself feel free to ask any questions)
