Afraid I won’t wake up

Trycod · 08/07/2024 02:30

Stupidly today I did a deep clean of my kitchen - used an entire bottle of bleach. The fumes were getting to me - eyes watering, nose running etc and I just soldiered through. God knows why I didn’t crack a window.

Anyway, I now keeping coughing up phlegm and when I take take a deep breath there is a rasping sound - like when you have a chest infection.

Have I caused permanent damage does anyone know? My mum once told me this horror story of a teen who had inhaled deodorant and never woke up. So feeling paranoid.

I finished cleaning at 5pm. Have been outside in the fresh air since.

Any help would be appreciated.’

I'd think you'd be fine, but you could ring 111 to put your mind at rest.

thaegumathteth · 08/07/2024 02:39

I would think you will be ok but as with any breathing concerns ring 111 for advice.

Fwiw bleach is really not needed - I can't even imagine using a whole bottle in one go. Horrendous for the environment as well as your own health.

I do hope you feel better soon.

Trycod · 08/07/2024 02:41

Thanks both. My oven was filthy and the leave on stuff did nothing. I just chucked bleach at the problem.

Just checking - you used no other products with the bleach?

Yup pure bleach. Would have added bicarbonate but ran out

You used a whole bottle of bleach in just your oven??

Were you then also in there scrubbing?

Yes, three hours of scrubbing. Head really close to chemicals. What an idiot

I'm honestly aghast but glad you didn't have bicarbonate as that would've made things even worse

I'd def call 111 given your level of exposure

Babyshambles90 · 08/07/2024 02:45

i would phone 111 and ask their advice. I don’t think you’re not going to wake up, and I don’t think you’ll have permanent damage, but you could have caused lung irritation - if you are sounding wheezy / rattly when you breathe, that may be the case and you might need something to help the irritation while your body heals. You could have been coming down with a virus that coincided with the cleaning, but I’d be looking to get checked out tbh. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Was all of the leave on stuff definitely thoroughly rinsed off?? Lots of things react with bleach in a way that is really bad for your lungs.

suburberphobe · 08/07/2024 03:00

Three hours of scrubbing your oven with bleach?! 😮

I only ever use bleach to clean the loo.

I think most of it had been steam cleaned off

Indeed, acids and alcohol mostly.

TorturedPoetsDepartmentAnthology · 08/07/2024 03:31

Phone 111 to get an assessment of your breathing if you are worried or straight to A&E if anything changes and you are struggling to breathe. Don’t risk it if your breathing isn’t right.

ZoomDoomZoom · 08/07/2024 04:07

Use Pink stuff or astonish for the oven, never use bleach as its corrosive & will damage your oven.

After I finish using the oven for cooking, I spray fairy liquid mixed with water & leave it for 30 mins while oven cools down. It makes scrubbing easier as the soapy water & heat has loosened the grease.

Poolstream · 08/07/2024 04:43

If you run out of bicarbonate op you can use baking powder.
I often use expired baking powder for cleaning.

A whole bottle of bleach is a lot in a confined area.
We have a pool and buy 20 litre drums of 14% chlorine, acid and alkaline powders and small strong chlorine tablets. Even though we’re outside we are very careful when handling chemicals. And never mix them.

In future open windows and wear a mask.

In future don't use bleach.

There are loads of natural, non-toxic cleaning materials which are either ready made or you buy the ingredients and make them up yourself. Bicarb of Soda and white vinegar are pretty much multi purpose cleaning products and while the odour of the vinegar hangs around for a bit, it is nowhere near as bad as bleach.

The internet is full of natural cleaning products and ideas, so next time you do a deep clean check these out first.

Also you could try oven liners or even tin foil to catch drips and prevent the worst of the problem.

Weetabbix · 08/07/2024 05:05

OP, what on earth were you thinking?

I am a clean person but there's never been a situation when I have used a whole bottle of bleach to clean anything! Bleach should be used very sparingly.

I hope you are OK but please learn about how to clean in a less dangerous way - for both yourself and the environment.

Weetabbix · 08/07/2024 05:07

@Poolstream Or just don't use that much bleach!! No one should need to wear a mask when cleaning their kitchen! 😕

On the rare occasions I’ve used oven cleaners I always wear a mask.

Right now in California it’s 10pm Sunday night.
It’s 100F (37C) outside where I live and my A/C is broken.
It’s 88 (31C) in my home.
I’m not feeling all that great myself, but going outside and breathing fresh air sounds like a good idea.
I hope you feel better.

dottydodah · 08/07/2024 06:43

I cleaned mould from bathroom with bleach. Didnt wear a mask .Afterwards coughing for about a week .I would ring 111 just to check

Arlott · 08/07/2024 06:50

How are you feeling OP?

marmoet · 08/07/2024 07:43

Never heard of putting bleach in an oven!! Hope you are Ok OP

VeryHappyBunny · 08/07/2024 10:22

Another thing about putting bleach in an oven is, what happens to the bleach at high temperatures when you turn on the oven? What noxious fumes and chemicals will be released, potentially even more hazardous than when cold? and will they have any impact on the food you cook?

If you are still feeling ropey then get to the Drs, A&E or chemist for checks and/or advice.

And for goodness sake let us know how you are.
