To take dd to A&E or wait to see GP

Hi all?

I know you can’t diagnose on here but concerned I may be wasting A&Es precious resources instead of waiting to see GP tomorrow.

we’ve just come back from holiday in Europe. 2 days ago DD who is teenager woke with a big egg sized lump on one side of forehead. No injury. She said she did squeeze a spot gently but not sure if that did it. Nothing obvious seen other than swelling. Yesterday the lump went down but the swelling spread to center of forehead and in between eyes and top of nose. The swelling has ‘flattened’ out but over a larger area and makes her forehead look slightly distorted. There’s no redness but is slightly warm to touch and tender. Dd said it’s giving her a slight headache and uncomfortable feeling.

Im worried it could be some sort of infection and it’s going near her eyes, or could it be a bug bite and I’m overthinking. So would you take her to A&E or go to GP tomorrow? The swelling isn’t massive but never experienced swelling spreading on forehead like that before (moved away from original lump) so not sure if it’s something I need to be concerned about (also nothing similar on google).

thanks for your advice in advance 🙂

A&E today I think, she needs some blood tests.

Cadela · 07/07/2024 16:05

A&E for sure. Infections like that on the head are not to be messed with.

OnlyFannys · 07/07/2024 16:05

Wow looking at the photos I would definitely get to a&e! Hope she is ok

I've had cellulitis three times. This looks like it. Please don't delay and as others have advised, ring 111 to see if they can get you in somewhere quicker than A&E - oral antibiotics might be sufficient, or if the clinician thinks IV is needed they should be able to get her prioritised at A&E.

Thanks @MoMandaS thats what I was concerned about. It’s not red though and she feels ok in herself. Did yours start like that?

Sometimes when a swelling goes down it just kind of dissipates over a wider area and you get that effect but it's really odd to have such a bump with no trauma in the first place.
I think it needs seeing face to face today however you can get that done

Have you phoned 111? Hopefully it won’t be too busy on a Sunday afternoon

Alwaystired23 · 07/07/2024 16:07

I'd ring 111.

I can't believe someone has suggested germoline.

Absolutely go to a&e. Pronto.

You can't make it up, can you? Swelling on the forehead, which is spreading and people would really just put germolene on it?

I hope your daughter gets seen soon, OP and that she is ok.

hendoop · 07/07/2024 16:08

Take her a &e - that's the advice, stop trying to talk yourself out of it, your initial instinct was correct, take a charger and snacks a

Wheresthebeach · 07/07/2024 16:09

A&E. Not worth taking any risks.

My friend's cellulitis looked like this. A&E OP

Haggisfish3 · 07/07/2024 16:10

I think an and e as well op.

Yousaidwhatagain · 07/07/2024 16:11

Gosh that looks quite big op. A and E definitely, hope she's ok.

VJBR · 07/07/2024 16:12

Time is with the essence with cellulitis. Please go to A and E.

catgirl1976 · 07/07/2024 16:12

111 to see if they can get you an immediate urgent care appointment. A and E if they can’t.

MaryShelley1818 · 07/07/2024 16:12

A&E no question.

ApiratesaysYarrr · 07/07/2024 16:13

Seeing your pictures I would be worried about an infection - not cellulitis (infection of the fat/soft tissue just under the skin), but osteomyelitis (infection of the bone). There is something called Pott's puffy tumour - depsite the name it is not a cancer, but infection, and if I saw your daughter, I would want to do a scan to check for bone infection (I'm a dr)

TimeGoesBySoSlowlyForThoseWhoWait · 07/07/2024 16:14

111 ad a minimum to see the Gp who will likely send you to hospital. But it might be admissions then rather than A&E.
How old is she and where did you travel too?

ChishiyaBat · 07/07/2024 16:14

I hope you manage to get her seen somewhere.

viccat · 07/07/2024 16:15

Getting a GP appointment on a Monday morning is so tricky anyway, so for that reason too I'd like to get it seen somewhere today.

Tiswa · 07/07/2024 16:16

A&E if it is cellulitis you will need iv antibiotics potentially so I woild
go straight away

Cocolapew · 07/07/2024 16:17

Id be going to A&E

A&E OP

PleaseletitbeSpring · 07/07/2024 16:19

Any swelling near the brain and eyes should be seen immediately. Take her to A&E.
