To take dd to A&E or wait to see GP

Hi all?

I know you can’t diagnose on here but concerned I may be wasting A&Es precious resources instead of waiting to see GP tomorrow.

we’ve just come back from holiday in Europe. 2 days ago DD who is teenager woke with a big egg sized lump on one side of forehead. No injury. She said she did squeeze a spot gently but not sure if that did it. Nothing obvious seen other than swelling. Yesterday the lump went down but the swelling spread to center of forehead and in between eyes and top of nose. The swelling has ‘flattened’ out but over a larger area and makes her forehead look slightly distorted. There’s no redness but is slightly warm to touch and tender. Dd said it’s giving her a slight headache and uncomfortable feeling.

Im worried it could be some sort of infection and it’s going near her eyes, or could it be a bug bite and I’m overthinking. So would you take her to A&E or go to GP tomorrow? The swelling isn’t massive but never experienced swelling spreading on forehead like that before (moved away from original lump) so not sure if it’s something I need to be concerned about (also nothing similar on google).

thanks for your advice in advance 🙂

Hey @Dewdrops1 firstly how scary for you. I hope it genuinely is nothing to be concerned about. I only have experience of the swelling you're talking about. My DD age 4 bumped her head at nursery and it was a goose egg which then spread over her forehead and down her nose and puffed up her eyes. The out of hours staff told us it was swelling and fluid and it tends to gravitate downward and is due to the lack of space in their head. Children and I assume teenagers haven't got as much space in their skull as adults and elderly therefore swelling tends to do that. Maybe she knocked her head and didn't think anything of it? In her sleep? Or maybe it was an insect bite that has caused a reaction and fluid/swelling. I hope she's okay but don't hesitate to go back if you're worried.

Could be a tick bite-I'd take her to A&E lyme disease can be serious, tell them where you went.

The threads a week old so it’s safe to say it’s worth looking at the updates before posting

The same thing happened to my son, about the same age. He was at kindergarten and went to the loo. When he came back he tripped and fell and banged his head on the door. The teacher told us when we went to collect him. The following day he had swelled beyond recognising. My friend asked if it was someone visiting. It was so alarming we took him to the hospital. I was nursing there at the time. They had him walking and running to see if that was why he tripped. The hospital spoke to the school about it. My GP gave him pills for bruising. It took a week for the bruising to go. For weeks, every time he tripped, or they thought he did, he would come home with a bandage around his head.

dewdrops - google bulls eye rash. If it looks anything like that, even non typical then get online quick before going to gp, so that you know what to ask for. Do not be fobbed off with ringworm .
