Why is McDonald's so popular?

Not really an AIBU but posting here for traffic.

A new McDonald's is opening in my town centre and there are so many posts about it on local social media. The majority of people are delighted about it and as is often the case, shouting down those who are not and who have concerns about the increase in traffic, parking, rubbish etc in an already busy area.

There are lots of people already milling about outside it, looking in the windows, and it hasn't even opened yet. Will probably get shot down for saying this but said people were very overweight or obese, and in ubiquitous leggings or tracksuit bottoms.

Why do so many people want to eat McDonald's so often?

What is the obsession with it and other fast food?

IMO it's ok as an occasional treat, but surely not every day or thereabouts?

Hash browns ❤️

RedExpert · 07/07/2024 15:35

Or you could ask yourself why you are so obsessed with other people’s weight. Now that’s unhealthy.

Salt + sugar + fat. Humans crave this combination.

I think that this nails it. It is barely food imo and kids should be nowhere hear this shit.

OvernightOatsAgain · 07/07/2024 15:36

No idea .... dreadful, over-priced rubbish. YUK!!!

Of course Hmm

So why do you think they will eat it daily, do explain?

RosesAndHellebores · 07/07/2024 15:40

When the dc were little it was an occasional treat. Nothing wrong with a happy meal once a month. Nobody is forced to eat it regularly.

Itsallsostressful · 07/07/2024 15:40

I'm not a v regular customer but me and the husband enjoy a mcdonalds on occasion. It's quick and cheap and 'fills a hole!' Oh and horror of horrors I sometimes wear trackies or a pair of leggings ! We've even been known to munch a McD's on holiday !

A lot of the ND kids I work with feel safe with McD's as they know exactly what they are getting.

It's cheap, convenient and addictive.
But it's also ultra processed, full of fat/salt/sugar, and is unhealthy.
Our food industry is completely screwed and as a result, so are we.

Yes agree.

Chenecinquantecinq · 07/07/2024 15:40

Cheap and easy and tastes good what is not to understand about this?

BotterMon · 07/07/2024 15:41

McD's is fine occasionally like everything else in moderation. What amazes me are people that have it (and other fast food) delivered. Maybe the delivery companies should also be blamed for the increase in consumption of fast/UP food and associated health issues.

FinalCeleryScheme · 07/07/2024 15:41

I understand your puzzlement OP. I too feel strongly about the beef, the baps, the sauces and the fries. And I see lots of ill-fitting leggings on people who go in and of McDonalds.

I was saying this just the other day to my friend as we sat and ate our delightful French meal. Steak frites with peppercorn sauce we had, plus loads of baguette. Tarte aux pommes for pudding. Plus a bottle of decent red.

It was a ‘good luck’ meal for my friend who’s going to a private hospital next week for a gastric band.

But it was all organic and the restaurant is a bijou business, so I think we’re a cut above, frankly.

Maybe a few more people should crack on with overnight oats and put the greasy burgers down? We are a massively unhealthy nation.

RubySloth · 07/07/2024 15:43

I actually don't think its cheap especially if you aren't buying off the savers menu and you have to buy for the family. Would much rather have a local Chinese.

Mrsredlipstick · 07/07/2024 15:43

McDonald's were the first fast company to declare the calories on their menu.

EddieSweety · 07/07/2024 15:09

Because Big Macs are amazing

I think a Big Mac (on its own, no fries, no Coke), 563 calories, plus an apple for dessert, is actually a pretty healthy lunch.

BrandyandGinger · 07/07/2024 15:45

Taking kids out for a happy meal is a cheap treat. You can tell younger teens to meet you in McDonalds when they are waiting to be collected after shopping or the cinema because they are usually well lit and safe. Older teens often get their first jobs there. The chips are delicious.

mydogisthebest · 07/07/2024 15:45

Punkrockprincess · 07/07/2024 14:31

Because its delicious and cheap.

It's not either of those things

Ithinktomyselfwhatawonderfulworld · 07/07/2024 15:46

We tend to have it once every 6 weeks or so. It’s the only takeaway or fast food we have. It’s cheap in relation to other takeaways and hits the spot if we’ve had a busy week. We don’t feed it to the children though.

Deadringer · 07/07/2024 15:46

It's quick cheap and tasty. I think most people eat it only occasionally though?

buttnut · 07/07/2024 15:47

Then the first day when McD’s etc reopened there were folk sitting in 2 hour queues at their drive thru’s.

Tbf there wasn’t much else to do. This was back when we used to stand outside clapping for fun.

emscot · 07/07/2024 15:47

I really don't get it either. We went past the one near us on fri evening and the queue for the drive thru was out of the car park and onto the road. Ridiculous!
I would eat it very occasionally if it was late and we were travelling or unable to cook for whatever reason but I wouldn't say it's enjoyable, it just does the job

Disturbia81 · 07/07/2024 15:48

Gemzee · 07/07/2024 14:26

I don't get the hype either! About any fast food/takeaways. Most of the time maccyds is not tasty & just tastes salty to me .. however a big mac while hungover is delicious 😋

So you do like it 😂

Isobel201 · 07/07/2024 15:49

I like their breakfast baps, but I don't do it every day, just once or twice a week if I've run out of something and can't pop to a supermarket.

LadyLolaRuben · 07/07/2024 15:49

Because you get exactly what you expect, quickly and at a decent price. The standard is the same and you never get food poisoning
