How often do you eat takeaways?

I work in a pretty stressful job and often have to work overtime. Lately, I've noticed that I'm eating 4-5 takeaways a week and sticking to simple foods like sandwiches when I'm at home.

While I haven't put on weight yet (I'm still in my mid-20s). Using "Just Eat" is so easy and convenient, but I'm becoming increasingly concerned about my health.

I came to this realisation when the takeaway driver said the staff at the shop were surprised when they found out I was a female in my 20's apparently they thought I'd be a bloke in my 40's.

Now I'm too ashamed to order from them again. 😭😂

How often do you eat takeaways & how do you make time to prepare your own food?

Mmm, takeaways and deliveries are massive greasy treats where you have no idea of how much fat they've added. So don't do it.

My takeaways (salad, Nando’s, Greek) aren’t massive and greasy and do have the calories on them 😄 deliveroo…

DuesToTheDirt · 07/07/2024 11:59

Once every 2-3 months, maybe, as a treat.

I weigh myself every morning, and the morning after a takeaway I'm inevitably 2-3 lb heavier. As it's a rare treat I pig out a bit I suppose, and the weight does go down again after a day or two, but I imagine if I had takeways regularly I'd be putting on weight.

SummerTimeIsTheBest · 07/07/2024 12:17

It used to be a minimum of twice a week plus two meals out a month 🤦‍♀️ Since we started our health kick 6 weeks ago, we’ve had one takeaway and one meal out. Both our waistlines and wallets have thanked us 😝

Oblomov24 · 07/07/2024 12:44

Once a month. Or when I just can't be bothered to cook.

blackandwhitestripes · 07/07/2024 13:16

I think it depends on where you live! We we crustal so have to drive and I'd say every couple of months.

If I lived in a city it would be once a week!

Elphame · 07/07/2024 13:19

Couple of times a year maybe? There's not a great choice around here and what there is isn't great. In fact they are dreadful. Expensive and poor quality.

I have a repertoire of meals that take about 20-30 minutes max to prepare and cook and make good use of my slow cooker.I also make double amounts and freeze one wherever possible for a quick meal

Mountainhowl · 07/07/2024 14:18

Normally 1-2 times a month, but it will be more if we're travelling to visit family as we often stop for a McDonald's on the way, get chips at the beach, and might have to get McDonald's (it's a guaranteed hit with 2 ND kids) on the way home again depending on timing of travel, so then we will have it a few times within a few days

We're actually surrounded by takeaways in our little village - kebab/pizza shop, Chinese, fish & chips and an Indian. Thankfully none of us like Indian, the chippy isn't great and the kebab house is cash only, so there's not a huge temptation locally and we cant get uber eats/just eat delivery in our area. Now if we had a domino's close by that could be an issue, I used to love domino's before we moved (they won't deliver here)

LadyFeatheringt0n · 07/07/2024 14:22

Once or twice a month. It must be costing you a fortune to get takeaway 4 or 5 times each week.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 07/07/2024 14:36

We have a Payday takeaway once a month.

Then if DH is away over the weekend looking after his mum and ds isn't working, I'll sometimes splurge on a pile of samosas and some daal. DH hates lamb and it's only about once a month.

The rest of the time I cook from scratch which is a tad wearying, but I use Rukmini Iyers One pan books so I can just throw everything in the oven and forget for an hour.

I live alone and hate cooking. However, I have never ordered a takeaway just for myself! Maybe I should start?!

I am fortunate enough to live a stone’s throw from a gigantic M and S and buy a lot of ready meals and bags of salad, jacket potatoes, etc.

I usually cook a roast chicken meal once a week and eat it over two days (DDog assists) so I keep scurvy at bay.

I order takeaway just for me. But I usually order extra so I can have it 2 nights in a row.

Cerialkiller · 07/07/2024 14:57

We used to do every Friday, but with costs going up and (imo) quality dropping it just wasn't worth it. Might as well eat out instead and get the whole experience. Now maybe once or twice a year for birthdays or when we have guests.

Op there are takeaways and takeaways. A chicken shish kebab with salad and tzatziki is a different kettle of fish to an extra large double cheese and pepperoni pizza. One contain vegetables and less salt for one.

I would cut back but let yourself have one once a week or whatever, but make better choices. Less fried/battered food, more vegetables. Indian is good for this too, Chinese is difficult!

Tbh the main thing putting me off buying takeaway is cost over health, there are lots of healthier options. If cost is the issue then pp have made lots of good and convenient suggestions. Meal kits, mands ready meals. Most supermarkets do those foil trays of various meats you can chuck in the oven and serve with your own veg/carbs. Done faster then waiting for delivery too.

Yes I know about those deliveroo calories. To the cost of my figure.

Pichee · 07/07/2024 17:44

Weekly. Any more and I feel lazy. We usually deliveroo something like Wagas. Not much travels well. Can’t go wrong with a pizza or curry.

Having said that I’ve got something coming now after having one yesterday - which I could only have a few bites of. Tasted good but I wasn’t hungry so gave to dog (burger). Just did a massive chore so treating myself again.

Londonrach1 · 07/07/2024 17:45

I think we had one about 3 or 4 years ago. Almost never. However when we had no kitchen 6 years ago had to have one most nights for a week ..so glad it was only a week

Londonrach1 · 07/07/2024 17:47

Just realized McDonald's is a takeaway although we stay in to use the soft play hence why we go...once or twice in the school holidays although not been since Christmas this year...so twice a year fur McDonald's but for a child certainly not me. Never for the rest although as I said we did get one 3-4 years ago...

Afternoonteavirgin · 07/07/2024 17:50

Never, is my default
I've ordered one off my own bat, in my entire life, maybe 4-5 times not of my own free will but perhaps if hungry and friends were ordering ones and I felt like I should join in, or someone I was with at their house ordered one and I'd get a side order as to not appear rude. Nowadays if that happens (was much younger then) I'd choose to go to the shop and get 'real' food, or if I had friends round I'd opt to make something.
I like cooking, like healthy food and they're extortionate and full of crap, why would you?

PumpkinPie2016 · 07/07/2024 17:54

Very rarely - can't remember when we last had take away, but we live rurally so very few options near by and more hassle than it's worth explaining how to find our address 😂

There's nothing wrong with simple things like sandwhich/soup/something on toast a couple of times a week. We sometimes do this if we have something on in the evening or the day has been particularly busy.

My job is very busy so in the week, I tend to cook simple things e.g. baked fish, use frozen veg a bit, to save time. Then cook other things on weekends/quieter evenings.

I try to make a couple of things that will do more than one meal too e.g. curry/spaghetti bolognaise. You can freeze half for another day.

CobaltQueen · 07/07/2024 18:03

Hardly ever and if I do it will be the chip shop. I used to get takeaways all the time in my twenties as well. Now more money and health conscious.

It is taking alot of my income.amd making me feel like shit! I really want to quit and then at times I really don't.

I've been hearing this! Spag Bolognese does seem to be a great option!
Sadly I live in a city so everything is available at the click of a button! I think they now have McDonald's here delivering until 3 am!

I don't understand why I'm like this as I was brought up with freshly cooked food!

I think I may just go onto microwave meals and then switch to freshly health food a few months later. I feel if I jump into the deep end then I will just quit after a few days.

Rarely .. apart from fish and chips there aren't any good takeaways near us. I think they are just so expensive for what they and I am a confident cook. If I 'can't be bothered to cook' I am just happy with something simple like cheese and biscuits or a sandwich, I don't feel I need a 'proper' meal each evening.

Freyaaaa · 07/07/2024 20:21

If I only I had someone to go with! I'm looking for a partner online and that's a another thread in itself. 😭😂

Not much that is good quality where I live and I often think I can do better at home BUT occasional chicken shish or fish and chips. However love one when I am in London, price has got a bit eye watering now though

henlake7 · 07/07/2024 20:30

Back when I was seriously obese it was a couple of times a week. Nowadays it's a couple of times a year.

Not that I can always be bothered cooking though. Tonight I just had a giant plate of crudites, hummus and rice cakes!
