Sunscreen liar

I'm part of a what's app group and rarely contribute.

One person asked for recommendations for suncreams. One poster pipes in and claims nivea was applied every 45 mins to an hour and she still burnt.

A few months ago she shared a Which? Article where nivea failed the test. She didn't realize it was outdated but still, I very much doubt she would buy nivea and she didn't burn (including 14 month old) with it being applied so frequently.

Shes forever sharing links about safety products and what to avoid etc.

Aibu in thinking she's being dramatic?

She might be but if she was out in the sun for hours she probably did burn, reapplying sun cream doesn't make the protection last longer.

JMSA · 05/07/2024 17:42

Why not just leave the group? Confused I don't see the issue.

useitorlose · 05/07/2024 17:45

Why do you care?

Nivea sun cream is the only one that we’ve ever burnt with, rubbish stuff, why would you think she would lie about this??

She posted a few weeks ago about it not passing Which so why than buy it? Also apply it every 45 mins to 1 hour and burn? That seems far fetched tbh

Just put in your own opinion on which sunscreen is best and the person asking can them make up her own mind.

MumDoingMyBest · 05/07/2024 18:25

Surely it depends on how quickly she burns without suncream, the factor she was applying, how well it was applied, the activity she was doing and the UV count on the day? It's possible certainly to burn even when applying suncream frequently.

But just leave or mute the WhatsApp group if it bothers you. Life is too short to be giving this much headspace.

PardonSmardon · 05/07/2024 18:26

Some spoke burn very easily even with sunscreen. The only sunscreen that properly blocks the sun for me is Ultrasun face factor 50

No they should all be lasting more than 1 hours, with it being 50 plus.... And her kid burnt.

Can depend on what country she was in, as the UV index and temp can hit differently. I've found that some UK branded creams just don't cut it in certain countries. This is anecdotal of course, from my times working abroad and seeing many a British lobster.

It’s not far fetched at all. Suncream only multiplies your natural sun protection, no matter how many times you put it on.

So if you are fair skinned and burn in 15mins with no SPF on, then SPF 30 only gets you 7.5hrs of protection. This can be further reduced if you are in the sun during peak UV hours or swimming or haven’t put it on thick enough.

LoremIpsumCici · 05/07/2024 18:34

Reapplying doesn’t increase the time you have in the sun without burning.

Could be an application issue. There's a specific technique to applying sunscreen and making sure its pushed into and penetrates the skin sufficiently, which most British people don't do. Many apply it in a way that most of it just sits on top of the skin and slips off or is transferred to clothing. Perhaps she is particularly bad at application.

But you do post on it sometimes? And you’re reading it and you think she’s spreading false information, so just send a message with the one you think is best.

Topofthemountain · 05/07/2024 18:47

I'm not sure what the issue is. Someone asked for recommendations, she offered a 'do not buy' based on her experience.

She isn't telling people to not use sunscreen, just not that one.

A few weeks prior she spread an out of date Which article for that suncream so why now use it?

What false info?

OP posts:
Topofthemountain · 05/07/2024 18:51

I'm guessing people told her it was out of date, so she got some and shared her new experience.

Some sunscreen doesn't suit some people, my DD is allergic to the blue Nivea, so she doesn't use it.
