Just that really?! I know Rishi will start making more money on the circuit now so to speak. But what do all the others do? What sort of jobs?

The sort of jobs they did previously!

ExitPursuedByABare · 04/07/2024 23:28

I think they get a tidy pay off.

But yes, back to what they did before.

AutismHelp1980 · 04/07/2024 23:29

And all their staff? They’re just redundant?

Some go into the media, some go into lobbying, some enjoy being in Britain’s grandest retirement home ; the House of Lords.

Others go back to their old careers. Some Labour MPs become academics, some Tories pick up company directorships.

Liz truss was prime minister for 30 days and will get £90,000 every year PENSION for it

Absolutely sickening

TheShellBeach · 04/07/2024 23:30

They just go back to the jobs they had before they were MPs.

A lot of MPs are lawyers by profession including, of course, our new PM. Many of them go back to the law.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/07/2024 23:31

One Some of them end up presenting one railway programme after another across every terrestrial channel.

Tristram Hunt was an academic first wasn't he? Also labour have made plenty of peers.

I came here to say the same thing but got engrossed in reading the thread.

Moonshine5 · 04/07/2024 23:32

Didn't a lot of them hold 2/3 other roles while being MP's lol

Feelingstrange2 · 04/07/2024 23:33

They get good redundancy.

But it's part of the problem really. How many of us could even contemplate trying to be an MP with the lack of definite secure employment.

And so it leaves it open to those with money to stand.

catin8oots · 04/07/2024 23:34

I've always head scratched over this.
Even if they were a successful lawyer or whatever before, surely they can't just rock up back to their old firm and be instantly employed tomorrow morning?

Why not?

AutismHelp1980 · 04/07/2024 23:43

I guess there has to be a job for them at their old firm?

I agree it's only an accessible career if you are confident you can make money 'after' if the after comes.

They usually do very well because of the contacts they've made during their time in government. They become consultants very often. The odd one ends up in the Lords which is paid work. A few write memoirs.

It’s not really a pension. It’s more an allowance for maintaining an office/team that every ex-PM is entitled to.

I don’t agree with it though - obviously it’s crazy money and I think most of us agree she wasn’t around long enough to deserve it.

Floatingandundecided · 04/07/2024 23:35

Why not?

Because presumably when they left their job to become an MP their job was filled by someone else and there isn't necessarily a vacancy for them.

TeenLifeMum · 04/07/2024 23:47

Consultancy work and public speaking.

Not if they’re a lawyer (as an example). Or a doctor. As their training and skills would need refreshing. That’s why some MPs continue practising as doctors and lawyers in Parliament, alongside their role as an MP - e.g. Rosena Allin-Khan has done shifts in A&E when possible and Geoffrey Cox has worked on and off as a lawyer.

Well they're mate/relative probably owns the firm or they own it themselves. So they'll be alright no doubt.
