To think this isn't cultural appropriation?

JennyBeans141 · 04/07/2024 16:51

It's the print on a jumpsuit I have bought, and love.

To be honest I didn't even register the fact that the illustrations are of black women, but so what if they are?

My OH is of the opinion that I'll raise eyebrows wearing these out and about, given that I'm a white person. We live in a multi cultural area where there are a lot of black people. He thinks somebody might accuse me of "cultural appropriation", particularly our neighbour who we don't get along well with and always seems to be looking for a reason to have a row.

So what do you think? Are they inappropriate or is it a total non event?

Everything seems to be bloody cultural appropriation now days. Don’t do anything outside your race cos it’s cultural appropriation.

No. You can appreciate other peoples culture and still be respectful. It’s when people take the piss such as wearing a traditional Native American head wear for Halloween. That’s the problem. You aren’t showing proper respect for their customs.

The dress is fine for you to wear as a white woman OP

redalex261 · 04/07/2024 16:54

I mean they are absolutely fine - its a cotton print, not traditional garb!! Wear them with joy! Tell your neighbour to bugger off if they start!

spsy · 04/07/2024 16:55

Total none event, it’s cultural appreciation.

Meadowfinch · 04/07/2024 16:58

It's a cotton print. I'm sure the manufacturer didn't limit its sale to only black communities. That's just silly.

Bowling4TomatoSoup · 04/07/2024 16:59

Non event - surely it’s racist to think you shouldn’t be wearing that?

Specialguardianshiporderchild · 04/07/2024 17:05

Hi OP, I'm black. This is not cultural appropriation. If anything, its cultural appreciation!

The other black women I know would love to see a white woman wearing this.

Peonies12 · 04/07/2024 17:12

It's not cultural appropriation. But personally I wouldn't be comfortable wearing this as a white women, however I cannot articulate why that is.

Soontobe60 · 04/07/2024 17:14

I assumed they were PJs!

Exactly this. It’s no different to me wearing a T-shirt with biggie on it. Wear it and enjoy it. My children are mixed and I join in with my children and their grandparents wearing their traditional clothing. Their cousins etc “back home” love that I join in!

Birdingbear · 04/07/2024 17:20

I wouldn't wear this ....definitely raise a few eyebrows.

Is that because it's an unusual style or because of the colour of the people on the print?

where did you buy them? They’re lovely!

SuffolkUnicorn · 04/07/2024 17:27

Where is it from I’d wear it

SuffolkUnicorn · 04/07/2024 17:28

And yes I’m white

wellington77 · 04/07/2024 17:33

cultural appropriation is not this! And a lot of things get classified as it when it’s not. Don’t be afraid to wear trousers with people’s faces on it just because they don’t look like your face, what is the world coming to!

Yes, I agree. It isn't cultural appropriate because there's nothing symbolic or sacred about it but I think it could be asking for trouble/comments/judgemental looks. I would be concerned that black people would think I was maybe taking the piss or making a point of some sort. On the other hand I see a black poster said she would view it as a positive from a white woman so who knows.

FatmanandKnobbin · 04/07/2024 17:41

This isn't cultural appropriation. I think actual cultural appropriation is getting mixed up a lot nowadays by people desperate not to offend.

My heritage is one where there is a lot of appropriation, deeply meaningful things turned into toys, or certain types of people who jump onto my culture and claim parts of it as their own without understanding the significance behind certain things, usually in order to make money, and therefore people seek the cheap option rather than the traditional option, which would put money back into communities who need it.

These, however, are just trousers with a print. My dd has mermaid wallpaper with both black and white mermaids on it, and we are neither.

FateReset · 04/07/2024 17:46

I'd feel very uncomfortable wearing those (white woman) partly the print partly the pj style.

They look a bit 'try-hard to be alternative' as though you're seeking attention by wearing them?

LakeTiticaca · 04/07/2024 17:46

Cultural appropriation doesn't exist. It's something dreamed up by virtue signallers whose only goal is to find offence in anything and everything.
Most folk I have met of a different culture love to share their food, their music, their clothes, everything 😆

@LakeTiticaca But how do you know what other people feel about this?

sonjadog · 04/07/2024 17:49

It isn’t cultural appropriation because that involves taking other people’s cultural practices. There are no cultural practices involved here. That is just a design showing some non-white people. Wear it if you like.

RubySloth · 04/07/2024 17:55

It's a sad time when people are just seeing black faces, surely that isn't your first thought seeing this?

PurpleChrayn · 04/07/2024 17:55

It's not cultural appropriation but it's pretty darn ugly!
