To think this isn't cultural appropriation?

It's the print on a jumpsuit I have bought, and love.

To be honest I didn't even register the fact that the illustrations are of black women, but so what if they are?

My OH is of the opinion that I'll raise eyebrows wearing these out and about, given that I'm a white person. We live in a multi cultural area where there are a lot of black people. He thinks somebody might accuse me of "cultural appropriation", particularly our neighbour who we don't get along well with and always seems to be looking for a reason to have a row.

So what do you think? Are they inappropriate or is it a total non event?

Ask Lucy & Yak or the designer Asaph Lucas, (PreachyKeen), what their intended customer is.

You'll get a mixed reaction. I wouldn't wear them for fear of offending and having to deal with that.

@Sunnytwobridges "This. I’m black too and it would make me happy to see a white person wearing this."

Why would it make you happy?

Personally wouldn't wear this because it's very gearish. But I see you're donning pink Crocs too so ..... hehe. I'm poking fun but no, not cultural appropriation. What exactly would you be appropriating by wearing this garment?

I had a t shirt from ASOS that said “miso fancy” and it was cute graphic of a bowl of happy noodles. It was so cute I loved it. I wore it out shopping one day and I was told twice that it was cultural appropriation etc

I have never worn it since. I bought a jumper just to cover it up I was so ashamed.

Tread carefully OP - your DH may be correct in his thinking. I certainly wouldn’t after my experiences.

That is OUTRAGEOUS! Don't bow down to these divisive freaks. Wear your t shirt with pride.

This whole cultural appropriation thing is crazy. By their very nature cultures are supposed to be shared and adopted. It’s literally how humans share knowledge and adapt.

Im half Indian and love seeing non-Indian women wearing bindis, saris at weddings, Jhumka earrings, henna etc.

Am I going to be pissed that people eat curry and do yoga? No enjoy!

Is that because it's an unusual style or because of the colour of the people on the print?

I'm fine with bold ....but even if the trousers had white faces on it, it just doesn't sit comfortable for me personally. I definitely think that if youre a white person and wearing faces of a black person ....not sure how others who are black would feel about it. I guess they would be the best people to answer that question. It's definitely a no from me just incase it's classified as offensive
