To think no politicians care at all

So I was at a dinner party last night and all my friends where saying they're voting for labour and seemed really enthusiastic that everything will get better.
I too am voting labour but don't think much will change.. I have some American friends and they say Biden is just as bad as trump when it comes to politics even though they're on opposite sides. I feel it's the same in the UK.

I personally think most politicians are in it for themselves and serve the globalist agenda of making us all drones to capitalism and consumerism, and they are just here to manage all the chaos that's created in-between.
I think statistically things may look better but I don't think we will notice it in our daily lives.

I was saying this to my friends last night and they looked at me with sorrow. One of my friends said maybe I was depressed. Maybe I spend to much time on twitter...

Does anyone else feel like this?

I feel similarly OP- you only have to look back at the various 'sleaze' stories, backhanders and expenses scandals to feel quite dispirited.

I think there are a few who genuinely want to serve their constituency, but I suspect that these are rarely the ones who make it in to the Westminster inner circle.

Jutemat · 04/07/2024 19:48

What trough? The backhanders trough? I honestly think most do it for the kudos and the power.

JawJaw · 04/07/2024 19:57

@Oblomov24 really, all of them? Every last one?

LiterallyOnFire · 04/07/2024 19:59

BCBird · 04/07/2024 17:53

Today it was with a heavy heart that I.went to vote. No one party stood out for me as the party who were in tune with issues I was most concerned about. I could not bring myself not to vote, but I did so very reluctantly

Me too.

I remember how happy I was in 1997. Not feeling like that this time.

JawJaw · 04/07/2024 20:10

@Saintmariesleuth I agree it’s probably true that the good ones don’t make it into the Westminster inner circle. But that inner circle is small. Outside it are a majority of MPs just slogging away, answering 300 emails a day (some of them life threatening) going to meetings in the evenings, dealing with constituents issues of every single conceivable type, all of them demanding action and response. On top of that, umpteen late nights and committees in parliament. It is incredibly time consuming, hard work for which an MP is rarely thanked and often threatened. On top of that, many of them are earning less than they could do outside parliament.

We see a handful of the same politicians in the media. Those at the top, and those who have broken the rules. It’s a bit like believing that all actors are rich. In the meantime the majority just get on with their life. One day you will really need an MPs help and perhaps only then you will realise.

I 100% agree with your entire post.... We are all slaves to capitalism, there is no choice for us... even the water we need to live comes at a price.... They absolutely are all the same and that has become transparently clear with kier starmer, he isn't even good at hiding it.... the entire thing is a farse

Your friends haven't awoken to reality and probably never will. We are pitted against eachother with partisan politics to prevent us seeing the real problem....

ExtraOnions · 04/07/2024 20:25

Some are great .. some are dreadful .. some are thieves, some are defrauders, some care, some lie etc

Try to meet the ones on your local area, check the voting record, talk to them. I don’t like my local Tory MP, I don’t like his voting record, and I don’t like that what he says on his electoral leaflets does not match what he has actually done in parliament

I think it’s wrong to say they are all that same, or they all don’t care .. there are some good people out there

Tinkerbot · 04/07/2024 20:29

They are too influenced by headlines and Twitter nonsense - just f…ing ignore it and stop pandering to idiots.

BUT then you get the mugs public going along with the nonsense -the worst thing was T May sorting the elderly care issue -then the oldies who would have most benefitted believed Labour when they called it a dementia tax wtf really do you oldies (I’m one) really think you aren’t at risk -unbelievable idiocy -MPs don’t have a hope with idiots for constituents.

Saintmariesleuth · 04/07/2024 21:30

@jawjaw Unfortunately my interactions with politicians have not been overly positive, but I hope I am proven wrong and meet some of the more effective ones. I am sure that some MPs and local councillors work very hard in their role.

I agree that the politicians who dominate the headlines will likely be those who are controversial or involved in a scandal, so it can come across that all of them are tarred with the same brush.

I also agree with the the poster who suggested that social media has had a negative impact on politics- although populist politics has always occurred, it seems to have ramped up with the rise of social media. I think this means that a lot more time and attention is taken up on image and away from the actual work than ever before.

Rainbow1901 · 04/07/2024 21:53

I hope our former MP makes it back to the Houses of Parliament - he has done so much for our town that had been ignored by the previous two MPs for Labour for years. He has been fighting to get our A&E reinstated as the nearest A&E 15 miles away can't cope with the larger geographic area it is expected to cover. He has started flood control projects to protect areas devastated by recent severe flooding, he is campaigning for a new motorway slip road to ease congestion in the town and many other projects. But his hands were tied by the local council being predominantly Labour run - who spent some of the funds received on projects which were wasteful to say the least.
Even if Labour are in power tomorrow - I hope we will still have a little patch of blue - many people are voting for this man because of the sterling work he has done for the home town and district that he loves. This ethos is something
that many other MPs should follow but don't!

NewName24 · 05/07/2024 00:37

YABU.
There are over 600 MPs (650 seat, I think).
Many of them are genuine people who work hard to serve their constituents.

Sadly, probably a smaller % than 40, 50 years ago, but YABVU to say no politicians care.

NewName24 · 05/07/2024 00:42

Robert Buckland, speaking now on the BBC, is clearly politician who cares. He was even thanked by his opponent for his public service over the previous years. Just one of hundreds. (and no, I don't know him personally and haven't voted for his party).

I understand why your friends looked at you this way - you sound like a conspiracy theorist and very detached from reality.

This serve the globalist agenda of making us all drones to capitalism and consumerism in particular is pure social media conspiracy stuff.

Do you know much about local politics in your area? A lot of hardworking people doing good stuff in all areas of the country.

Teddybarr · 05/07/2024 00:55

Maybe I spend to much time on twitter..

Sounds like you do, yes.

MPs are just people at the end of the day, it's a job; albeit an important one. Some are brilliant and in it for the right reasons, some are in it to build on their career and aren't that bothered about their constituents and the country. Anyone can go through the processes to get nominated as a candidate though, not many people bother as its hard graft to get there but you could do.

Local politics in my area? Well let's see... In the past month

  • 4 teenagers have been stabbed where I live in the past month
  • number of food banks rising in my area
  • my local high street is 90% takeaways, gambling shops and charity shops.
  • most of my friends are working 2 or more jobs and still struggling to pay the bills. (Yes, some of them are educated).
  • in my local area many people don't speak the English language at all
  • ambulance wait times are over 2 hours for a cat 2 call out

I don't need to understand local politics when I experience the decisions of it...

Absolutely! Here's hoping for a genuine change! I voted labour so have to believe but I'm not hopeful.

I felt the same looking at the manifestos for our constituency. I think we had 7 or 8 candidates to choose from and despite them all throwing around comments about our area being "the place I call home" just one leaflet had any information or proposals that were specific to our area. Several candidates don't even live here. Just smacks of career politics and is utterly depressing.

Freyaaaa · 05/07/2024 01:11

I'm sorry did you call me a racist because I'm concerned that many people in my area don't speak English?
Who cares about social cohesion and having shared values...

Yes, I am suggesting you may be racist. The implication is that you want him/her to eradicate non-English people from your neighbourhood and if she/he doesn’t they are uncaring.

Well suggest away! I stand by my comment!! If you move to the UK you should learn English. 💃🏼

We want good and caring people to want to be MPs. Its reasonable to assume some good and caring people are in the process or have achieved that and are MPs. If people then say all MPs are bad and uncaring then why would those people waste their effort when they can't win? Therefore you should target the bad ones.

thanks for all the thanks btw, you're too kind
