To be a secret Tory voter and feel embarrassed about it?

SecretToryVoter · 04/07/2024 12:41

I’ve just gone to do my vote and had to admit to myself that I’m one of those secret Tory voters and would be embarrassed to admit it to friends / family!

A month ago I was adamant that I would be voting Labour but ended up changing my mind for a number of reasons

  1. Keir seems to have a number of grand ideas of what he wants to do but no substance behind how he’s going to do it (where is he going to find an additional 6,500 teachers as just 1 example)
  2. Womens rights
  3. my Labour candidate has been helicoptered in and doesn’t look good on paper whereas the Tory candidate is a local, well respected councillor
  4. Tory policy is closer to my values overall

anyone else had to admit to themselves that they are a Tory at heart for this election?

I don't and would never vote Labour its not just Labour supporters who question why anyone could look at the decimation of public services and literal shit in our rivers and think the only barrier to the tories doing a good job was that they didn't have enough time lets give them another go.

Tell me you’ve no grasp of current affairs without telling me you’ve no grasp of current affairs,

ler me spell it out. Putin. Brexit.covid. Want me to go on?

AnOpinionInTheHand · 04/07/2024 13:17

I’m not happy with how the tories are doing or have done - but I don’t want the Labour alternative so I’ll vote conservative. I don’t discuss politics with friends of family because I suspect we will differ quite a lot. They won’t convince me and I won’t convince them so I don’t get into it.

i think Labour will win but I hope it’s not by the landslide predicted

But why stick with Conservative? Why not lib dem or green? Wont offer reform as an alternative as they shouldn't be anywhere near any reasonable conversation

Coffeerum · 04/07/2024 13:20

@LostTheMarble Even more hilarious with Labour who don’t even know what a woman is.

Ding ding ding. Bingo line complete!

Itisjustmyopinion · 04/07/2024 13:19

This! I am amazed that people admit that they align to Tory values.

If your values are to keep all your money and not pay for public services but still expect the NHS to be there when you need it, your children to be educated, to have a pension when you are old, to feel safe when walking down the street, to have parks and no holes in the road then I really don’t understand you

And that is not me being a shouty lefty it is just being bewildered about what on earth is a Tory value that benefits the majority of the population (and I am a high tax payer who will no doubt pay more under Labour but happy to do so if it means we actually have decent public services that have been decimated over the last 14 years while the mates of the government bought yachts with PPE money)

Glad you’ll be happy, as you will be digging deep in those High earning pockets.

enjoy

rainbow126 · 04/07/2024 13:21

Labour and Conservatives aren’t the only two options - what about Lib Dem or Green Party, OP?

Everyone is entitled to their vote and their opinion so don’t feel bad if your vote is what’s right for you.

(At least it’s not Reform who want to pull immigrants out of boats!!)

If you are embarrassed by who you are voting for, you are voting the wrong way

We have anonymous voting in the UK. Its a really important cornerstone of democracy. if someone doesn't want to say who they are voting for, they have every right.

In theory I guess, it would be better to feel proud of who you are voting for. But are there any parties you could genuinely say that about? Most people are holding their noses...

Billyballyboo · 04/07/2024 13:21

I'm with you OP. I'm a Conservative at heart but voting Reform. I'm not embarrassed by that and feel it's right for me. However, there are some friends I won't be telling as they would react badly. I care for them very much and don't want bad feeling between us.

Tandora · 04/07/2024 13:21

LlynTegid · 04/07/2024 12:51

Women's rights? How about not having to wait years for justice if you are sexually assaulted?

She just means they are intolerant and discriminatory about trans people, which OP likes.

FeatherBoas · 04/07/2024 13:22

SecretToryVoter · 04/07/2024 12:52

Good question on why I feel embarrassed. I guess there’s a lot of anti-Tory rhetoric in my circles and therefore indirect peer pressure

i also think the Tory government have acted awfully (Liz Truss / Covid parties) but I have voted looking forwards rather than backwards

i think I need to just accept that i voted for the right reasons for me personally and own it

So you are not embarrassed just worried about the reaction you may get, which is understandable the way politics is so polarised these days. It used to be you could discuss politics with people even when you were on opposite sides, now it goes immediately to personal abuse.

Genevieva · 04/07/2024 13:22

I’ve voted YANBU. However, you are being unreasonable to be embarrassed. There is a reason voting takes place in private. It allows you to choose for yourself with no influence from friends family or social media. The whole point of democracy is that you get to vote any way you want for any reason you want. There is no hierarchy of voters or reasons.

Yep, the Tories don't have "values". They're a self interest focus group, always have been since they were formed in 1834.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 04/07/2024 13:22

Franzkafkascat · 04/07/2024 13:09

But why ? Their values are very different. Hey ho, let’s hope you like it as much when we leave the ECHR. Or your kids are drafted into National Service.

Because I don't agree with several of Labour's 2024 policies which will affect me personally (no, not the private school one) & I don't believe they will/ will be able to do the things people seem to think they will. So I didn't vote for them.

I assume Labour will win the election, so in my constituency I'm voting for an opposition MP. I don't agree with the LD's opinion of women. So I didn't vote for them. That's how it works.

I'm not going to engage further, as the Labour supporters here seem stuck in a boring argumentative cycle. I'm happy with what I did today. I'm not happy about the overall situation, but that's different.

Emmanuelll · 04/07/2024 13:22

You can vote for who you want. A lot of people are selfish - that's nothing new. And will vote Tory if it benefits them financially.

LostTheMarble · 04/07/2024 13:22

Figgygal · 04/07/2024 13:19

But why stick with Conservative? Why not lib dem or green? Wont offer reform as an alternative as they shouldn't be anywhere near any reasonable conversation

And the other two should be? When will people get it into their heads - women’s rights are a key issue for many of us. You can dismiss it as not the case but it doesn’t stop it being true. And all the parties on the left have shown not to care for women’s single sex spaces or even will say in simple terms what a woman is. Some have show utter vitriol towards those of us showing even the slightest concern.

CovertPiggery · 04/07/2024 13:23

JassyRadlett · 04/07/2024 12:56

I think this may be a perception issue or an issue of extrapolating personal bubbles. I've certainly seen lots of Conservative voters in different social/family groups be very rude (from the patronisingly sneering to the flat out offensive) to those who they perceived as left-wing.

Same here in my family.

I've also noticed far more anti-Labour posts on here with Labour voters being called anti-women, fantasies and mean, than I've seen the other way around.

Beezknees · 04/07/2024 13:23

I'm a labour voter but I don't care who others vote for to be honest, I do find it baffling that anyone would think the Tories care about women's rights though.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 04/07/2024 13:23

I think this thread is demonstrating exactly why so many people are shy Tories.

ExtraOnions · 04/07/2024 13:23

…because the Tories have a great record on Women’s Rights.

There are more than 2 parties

Vote for things you believe in, and be comfortable with that

@Theweepywillow
Maybe reread my post.
Id never vote Conservative either Its not just Labour voters who would question why anyone would was my point.

Emmanuelll · 04/07/2024 13:24

I am rather confused as to why Reform voters are not shy. They should be!

Payattentioninclass · 04/07/2024 13:24

AIstolemylunch · 04/07/2024 12:46

Some people i know are voting Tory tactically in margibal areas to try and rrduce the 'super majority' a bit so Labour are less likely to 'have a mandate' to do some of their more bonkers stuff. These people dont actually want them to win.

What exactly is the 'bonkers' stuff Labour want to do? And I mean the stuff they want to do and not the stuff the Tories have been lying and scaremongering about.

Coffeerum · 04/07/2024 13:25

Beezknees · 04/07/2024 13:23

I don’t think anyone actually thinks that, even the people who say it.

baroqueandblue · 04/07/2024 13:25

WomensRightsRenegade · 04/07/2024 12:49

Or else the left has become so authoritarian that they can’t tolerate any differences of opinion without monstering/ cancelling people

Had to reread that, because you described the Tories to a fucking T.

aloha90210 · 04/07/2024 13:25

Presumably you want to keep it to yourself because there are so many judgmental Labour supporters who can't resist sticking the boot in.

CovertPiggery · 04/07/2024 13:25

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 04/07/2024 13:23

I think this thread is demonstrating exactly why so many people are shy Tories.

It's not different to the posts you see on Labour threads.

Overall, people are just less tolerant nowadays.
