To be a secret Tory voter and feel embarrassed about it?

SecretToryVoter · 04/07/2024 12:41

I’ve just gone to do my vote and had to admit to myself that I’m one of those secret Tory voters and would be embarrassed to admit it to friends / family!

A month ago I was adamant that I would be voting Labour but ended up changing my mind for a number of reasons

  1. Keir seems to have a number of grand ideas of what he wants to do but no substance behind how he’s going to do it (where is he going to find an additional 6,500 teachers as just 1 example)
  2. Womens rights
  3. my Labour candidate has been helicoptered in and doesn’t look good on paper whereas the Tory candidate is a local, well respected councillor
  4. Tory policy is closer to my values overall

anyone else had to admit to themselves that they are a Tory at heart for this election?

If your values accord with Tory policies just get on with voting for them, as you are free to do. What were you looking for from this thread?

WomensRightsRenegade · 04/07/2024 12:49

Or else the left has become so authoritarian that they can’t tolerate any differences of opinion without monstering/ cancelling people

This with bells on.

I think people can’t fathom why you’d vote for the current government. They’ve acted abysmally and you’re giving them the green light and saying ‘hey go ahead, give me more of the same ‘…

I agree. However, it’s about how LP voters (especially on here) are so rude & condescending when anyone suggests they might vote for another party. Like really rude, calling them thick etc.

Let’s not forget, we can all vote for whoever the hell we want. No amount of snarling from the ‘clever’ LP voters will/should change that.

Not including your reply. Just on other threads.

Ime, Labour voters go wild when anyone suggests an alternative vote choice, calling them thick/simple etc.

For evidence, see this thread! I'd add 'emotional blackmail' & 'calling people evil &/or selfish'. They need to accept that other people have rights & opinions - & voting tactics.

User2460177 · 04/07/2024 12:45

I agree op. I haven’t voted Tory (actually ever) but there is good and bad in every party and people should vote for what appeals to them. I do think that the tories have finally got it right on women’s rights which is important to me but luckily I have another candidate locally who is good on this issue who I feel better aligns with my opinions.

Have they got it right or are they just saying it now because they know it is something that could attract swing voters from Labour?? They have been in power for 14 years.

Maddy70 · 04/07/2024 13:12

You're ashamed for a reason

JacquesHarlow · 04/07/2024 13:13

Hang on @SecretToryVoter This is just getting bizarre...

So you're saying that:

"i also think the Tory government have acted awfully (Liz Truss / Covid parties) but I have voted looking forwards rather than backwards"

but in your OP you also said:

Keir seems to have a number of grand ideas of what he wants to do but no substance behind how he’s going to do it

So which is it?

You will hold the Labour Party to the highest standard on their pledges when "looking forward" at what they promise to do.

You won't however criticise anyone in FOURTEEN years who has 'acted awfully', because when it comes to the Tories, you look forward with the memory of someone who has just met Jones and Smith in Men in Black

I give up. I'm out.

MarkWithaC · 04/07/2024 13:13

If Tory policy aligns with your values then they're the party for you.
I'd just say, good luck to you if there's a Tory government when you or any of your loved ones loses their job/becomes ill/gets old.

Brackenfield · 04/07/2024 13:13

You should feel catastrophicallu ashamed never mind embarrassed. Women's rights? Tories? Hilarious.

XelaM · 04/07/2024 13:14

MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned · 04/07/2024 12:43

I honestly can't fathom why you'd vote for a party that you would be ashamed to tell other people you support. You wouldn't want to admit that you agree with them, but think they should be running the country?

Because my child is in private school and I can't afford the VAT increase.

Because I'm already being taxed to the hilt and don't want to pay even more taxes under Labour 🤷‍♀️

ReginaPhalange1989 · 04/07/2024 13:14

"Keir seems to have a number of grand ideas of what he wants to do but no substance behind how he’s going to do it" 😂

Well imagine the billions of £££ wasted by the Tories to line theirs and their friends pockets actually being redirected and spent on things we actually need.

Why don't we focus on what the Tories have done in the past 10 years instead of over analysing what Labour may do?

Anyone who votes for Tory after this past 10 years is deluded IMO and if you're too embarrassed to admit to anyone that you are voting Tory then you obviously know that they're doing something wrong...

ginasevern · 04/07/2024 13:15

"Tory policy is closer to my values overall"

I expect Tory policies are more aligned with your overall privilege and lifestyle. Nobody could honestly say, hand on heart, they've voted Tory for the good of the many. The "values" you describe are self interest. Which is fine, just be honest.

Coffeerum · 04/07/2024 13:15

@ReginaPhalange1989 Why don't we focus on what the Tories have done in the past 10 years instead of over analysing what Labour may do?

Don’t look backwards only forward apparently.

Brackenfield · 04/07/2024 13:13

You should feel catastrophicallu ashamed never mind embarrassed. Women's rights? Tories? Hilarious.

Even more hilarious with Labour who don’t even know what a woman is. I mean if there was the most basic starting point for women’s rights, knowing what one is would be it. Anyone who says they care for women’s rights and then vote Labour should be just as ashamed as any Tory voter.

RayonSunrise · 04/07/2024 13:16

Whenwillitgetwarm · 04/07/2024 12:55

Too transparent OP.

Reads as though it’s from Tory social media team. Trying to convince waverers to come your side of the fence, with the old ‘jump in the water’s fine!’ routine. We see you!

We’re going to have this until 10pm aren’t we?

Actual lol, that's exactly how it reads.

Foxblue · 04/07/2024 13:16

Can anyone direct me to any threads or posts that explain why the tories are better for women or have been better for women in the last 14 years because I literally cannot find any information beyond the trans issue, and I'd quite like to understand what people are basing 'better for women' on in regards to misogyny in society, health care, education, motherhood etc. I don't vote tory, but I think important to understand and consider why people vote for different parties, and all I'm seeing is 'trans people' and 'Starmer etc' - I don't care about what Labour are/aren't doing, what are the tories doing and what have they don't, unrelated to the trans issue.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 04/07/2024 13:16

LostTheMarble · 04/07/2024 13:08

I disagree, I think it’s a pretty dead cert that Labour will win and they will win clearly. Will it be the absolute massacre of the conservatives is another matter, depends how many people actually jumpy to Reform. But it’s true, many people don’t want Labour and for all those hoping for a new government tomorrow, it must be slightly soured by the fact it’s not because they’re the best option but simply because they’re not another few years of Conservative.

This.

Theweepywillow · 04/07/2024 13:16

There is nothing to be embarassed about I understand labour voters can be vociferous though and apply a lot of pressure, but be proud of your politics.

Brackenfield · 04/07/2024 13:13

No she shouldn’t. That’s the beauty of having our vote. We can vote for whoever we want. Its hilarious that you think you get to choose how she should feel!

AnOpinionInTheHand · 04/07/2024 13:17

I’m not happy with how the tories are doing or have done - but I don’t want the Labour alternative so I’ll vote conservative. I don’t discuss politics with friends of family because I suspect we will differ quite a lot. They won’t convince me and I won’t convince them so I don’t get into it.

i think Labour will win but I hope it’s not by the landslide predicted

Figgygal · 04/07/2024 13:18

OhmygodDont · 04/07/2024 13:11

Didn’t take long for the op to be picked apart, told she should be embarrassed and what not did it…

The lovely oh so lovely labour supporting population pushing everyone else to stay silent voters 🤐

I don't and would never vote Labour its not just Labour supporters who question why anyone could look at the decimation of public services and literal shit in our rivers and think the only barrier to the tories doing a good job was that they didn't have enough time lets give them another go.

You should not feel embarassed as you are entitled to your views but given the mess the Tories have left the country in after 14 years of austerity, covid-mishandling and corruption, the foolishness of Brexit, the running down of the NHX and public services and the demonising of migration upon which public services and economic growth depend, it is really very hard to understand why you would vote for a continuation of Tory mis-rule.

This! I am amazed that people admit that they align to Tory values.

If your values are to keep all your money and not pay for public services but still expect the NHS to be there when you need it, your children to be educated, to have a pension when you are old, to feel safe when walking down the street, to have parks and no holes in the road then I really don’t understand you

And that is not me being a shouty lefty it is just being bewildered about what on earth is a Tory value that benefits the majority of the population (and I am a high tax payer who will no doubt pay more under Labour but happy to do so if it means we actually have decent public services that have been decimated over the last 14 years while the mates of the government bought yachts with PPE money)
