To be a secret Tory voter and feel embarrassed about it?

SecretToryVoter · 04/07/2024 12:41

I’ve just gone to do my vote and had to admit to myself that I’m one of those secret Tory voters and would be embarrassed to admit it to friends / family!

A month ago I was adamant that I would be voting Labour but ended up changing my mind for a number of reasons

  1. Keir seems to have a number of grand ideas of what he wants to do but no substance behind how he’s going to do it (where is he going to find an additional 6,500 teachers as just 1 example)
  2. Womens rights
  3. my Labour candidate has been helicoptered in and doesn’t look good on paper whereas the Tory candidate is a local, well respected councillor
  4. Tory policy is closer to my values overall

anyone else had to admit to themselves that they are a Tory at heart for this election?

"Tory policy is closer to my values overall"

I expect Tory policies are more aligned with your overall privilege and lifestyle. Nobody could honestly say, hand on heart, they've voted Tory for the good of the many. The "values" you describe are self interest. Which is fine, just be honest.

I value many things including

personal safety
freedom of speech without hate
an opportunity to give my children something when I die
the ability to save and improve myself without it all being taken away

We are a Capitalist Democratic country….I value applauding that ethos.

Except the economy had not been laid waste by Labour. There was a global banking crisis in 2008. By 2010 the economy was recovering but the Coalition chose to impose austerity rather than go for growth and started the decline in public services which the Tories then continued.

Quantitative easing screwed the economy as it set asset prices skyrocketing, locking millions out of the housing market for a lifetime. Hyper low interest rates meant speculative landlords and rentiers, screwing over non homeowners even more.

Gordon Brown has a LOT to answer for.

Didimum · 04/07/2024 14:08

I have never voted Conservative and don’t align with their ethos, but you should never let people belittle who you vote far.

RickyBobbysKFC · 04/07/2024 14:08

Haven’t RTFT so I don’t know if things have moved on, but please don’t feel embarrassed OP.

I voted for Tory today, but I might vote for someone else in the future. No one is entitled to know who you voted as it it your decision.

I would, however, be embarrassed if I blindly voted for the same party time and time again and did no research on current policies etc.

But nit as much as Truss and Kwarteng.

Gettingbysomehow · 04/07/2024 14:09

Its the afternoon already, I need to go and vote. I have not a clue who to vote for and don't want to vote for any of this lot. I am truly stumped. I may as well just go and draw a large penis on my ballot paper.

I don't call them intolerant because they disagree with me. They're intolerant because of the anger they have towards anyone on the right, or even in the centre.

It's amusing to watch them get their knickers in a twist but it's very sad that they think they can bully people into agreeing with them. It is what politicians have encouraged the masses to do - bicker amongst ourselves and the left have fallen hard for it.

That attitude though - we're better than you - it breeds division. There's very little respect shown between either side it seems. If they speak passionately they're bullying etc. they aren't all doing that. Like not all conservatives are hyacinth bouquets who don't GAF about society in general.

Ontopofthesunset · 04/07/2024 14:09

It's funny how all these people who are suddenly scared of a 'supermajority' weren't urging people not to vote Conservative when BJ got in in case he got too big a majority.

A supermajority is not a thing in this country. Any secure majority means that the ruling party can pass most bills in the house. It's only if the majority is tiny, maybe under 10, that this becomes difficult. So a the strength of the opposition in numerical terms doesn't really mean much as bills are passed with a simple majority.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 04/07/2024 14:10

I've voted YABU, NOT because of who you voted for, but because you feel the need to justify it to anyone.
Who you vote for is your business OP. It's a secret ballot for a reason, so voters can vote for who the hell they want to with no judgement or ramifications for their choice.

HebburnPokemon · 04/07/2024 14:10

VoteLabour · 04/07/2024 14:06

Who I vote for is my own business. I don't tell anyone in real life. They know anyway.

😁

I voted Tory, I could never bring myself to vote labour, to think that Angela Rayner would be our deputy prime minister is almost laughable, to imagine that she could in any way represent us in the worldwide politics arena.
The tories have made mistakes but heaven help us if labour win a big majority, our children’s futures are decimated.

I feel the same about Angela Rayner. This time tomorrow she’ll be Deputy PM. 🤦‍♀️

NOTthisOldchestnut · 04/07/2024 14:10

'The tories have made mistakes but heaven help us if labour win a big majority, our children’s futures are decimated.'

And they're doing great now aren't they? Cereal for dinner, surviving on free school meals? Or is it just the rich children you are referring to?

Shortfatsuit · 04/07/2024 13:07

I think you should own your choice.

If you want more of what the Tories have given us over the last 14 years, why not just say that and articulate what it is that you value. Yes, others may judge you for it, but so what...as long as your choice is aligned with your own personal values, why would it matter?

This is the only answer you need.

Angela Rayner, a talented female politician from a working class background who has a regional accent. Oh dear, yes, how awful that she might have to talk to foreign politicians.

Shortfatsuit · 04/07/2024 14:10

LostTheMarble · 04/07/2024 14:06

That’s not what they meant and you know it.

I don't know it at all. I suspect that an awful lot of the vitriol aimed at Angela Rayner is from people who are furious that a working class woman doesn't seem to know her rightful place. They might dress it up as something else, but a lot of it is pure classism and misogyny.

This is what I’m doing.

yoive been taken in by a Tory propaganda lie then. No such thing as a supermajority in British politics.

Tory policy is closer to my values overall

But what about the people executing those policies? Are their values closer to yours too?

Did you see any benefits of their policies in last 14 years?

Spinet · 04/07/2024 14:11

God I feel GREAT about the possibility of Angela Raynor as deputy prime minister. A working class northern woman? Bloody BRILLIANT.

m00rfarm · 04/07/2024 14:12

berksandbeyond · 04/07/2024 12:47

Well I think you should sit with that feeling a bit, if you’re ashamed to say out loud who you are voting for, there’s a reason for that and maybe you’re on the wrong side?

She said embarrassed. Not ashamed. There is too much pressure on people to vote the way their "friends" are voting. Voting is private and you should vote for whom you want without feeling peer pressure to conform to the majority view. Anyway, back to being embarrassed not ashamed. They have totally different meanings. And the OP has considered her vote placement, which is more than many people. Just voting for ANY party without understanding the policies (presumably due to an element of peer pressure) - now that would be something to be ashamed about.

corkscrewedup · 04/07/2024 14:13

But people are very secretive when it comes to politics.

They are legally entitled to be secretive!

The ballot is a secret ballot - it's confidential. How you vote is your private and confidential information and you legally have a right to no one knowing.

To try to finde out how someon voted is illegal:

https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/guidance-candidates-and-agents-uk-parliamentary-elections-great-britain/polling-day/who-can-support-you-polling-day/maintaining-secrecy-ballot

Precisely because peer pressure can adversely affect how someone otherwise would vote

Obviously not. She just doesn’t want abuse from people like you.

Well then don't post on a public forum then? And I haven't abused anyone thank you.

Don’t lecture me about misogyny in politics. People have been happy to let many women in politics become the butt of jokes and even racism, but apparently it’s only a problem to Labour voters now that it’s directed at Rayner. Same Labour voters have been nowhere to be seen when Rosie Duffle has faced actual misogyny.
