To be a secret Tory voter and feel embarrassed about it?

SecretToryVoter · 04/07/2024 12:41

I’ve just gone to do my vote and had to admit to myself that I’m one of those secret Tory voters and would be embarrassed to admit it to friends / family!

A month ago I was adamant that I would be voting Labour but ended up changing my mind for a number of reasons

  1. Keir seems to have a number of grand ideas of what he wants to do but no substance behind how he’s going to do it (where is he going to find an additional 6,500 teachers as just 1 example)
  2. Womens rights
  3. my Labour candidate has been helicoptered in and doesn’t look good on paper whereas the Tory candidate is a local, well respected councillor
  4. Tory policy is closer to my values overall

anyone else had to admit to themselves that they are a Tory at heart for this election?

To be honest though it’s an apt description.

Of some people no doubt. I also imagine there there's plenty of intolerance on the other side of the aisle. But you really can't write them all off as intolerant lefties for having opinions which they're perfectly entitled to have. Sometimes people are left literally seething with rage over a desire for change and you can't blame them. It will be interesting to see what comes next.

lifelong Labour voter here. But for the first time ever am considering voting Tory. Mainly because they're the only party which seem clear about protecting vulnerable women. But it's really, really hard...

I am exactly the same. The traditional values of Labour and the Libdems and Greens have gone to pot when it comes to womens rights. I dont want to be scared to use a bathroom and I don’t want to feel I have to use disabled facilities to be safe. I wont feel safe changing at the swimming pool or in shops. I don’t want myself or my nieces or any women to be scared.

No one should be ashamed of that,

I wouldn't vote for them, and never have, but you don't have to reveal your vote. But why are you voting for a party you're embarrassed to admit you're voting for?

She’s explained. Do keep up.

Respectisnotoptional · 04/07/2024 14:01

I voted Tory, I could never bring myself to vote labour, to think that Angela Rayner would be our deputy prime minister is almost laughable, to imagine that she could in any way represent us in the worldwide politics arena.
The tories have made mistakes but heaven help us if labour win a big majority, our children’s futures are decimated.

I have voted Tory. I don't want them to win. I want labour to win, but I don't want a supermajority without a decent opposition. I am in a tory/libdem split seat. No chance for labour here at all, so voting for them would be a waste of a vote in that sense. The new local Tory seems nice and is standing up for local values that matter a lot to me. The libdems will almost certainly win but have lied about various things and buggered up the local council so they are not my favourites. So I have voted Tory despite wanting labour to win.

Are you bonkers? Read your post back to yourself.

If you have multiple children in private school you obviously aren’t being ‘taxed to the hilt’, despite the Tories massively increasing the tax burden. You have vast amounts of disposable income sloshing about and want to keep it all. Just be honest.

Are You saying that you want people to pay over half of their salary in NI and income tax? Is wanting to keep at least half of your salary “wanting to keep it all”?

Well you should be embaressed.

The idiots' response, maybe concentrate on your spelling.

Fightthepower · 04/07/2024 14:02

Why would you feel embarrassed if you think you've done the right thing? Obviously, there's a part of you that recognises that it's not.

I thought the same but didn’t want to be mean. Mental gymnastics at its finest.

Obviously not. She just doesn’t want abuse from people like you.

I can't fathom this. If you want Labour to win, vote Labour

Because it’s not true, it just another phrasing of shy Tory. I don’t vote for them because I like them …

Absolutely. I’m in Scotland and there’s a girl formerly at my child’s primary school trying to get cross sex hormones and a masectomy. I’m horrified at the effects this ideology has had on our children- especially girls

EasternStandard · 04/07/2024 14:03

On these threads it’s really vote as you wish and don’t worry about what others would do

It’s your vote, you only get one.

blanketjune · 04/07/2024 14:04

DanielGault · 04/07/2024 13:49

Do you realise the irony of referring to people who disagree with you 'intolerant lefties'? Not coming across as too open minded yourself there.

I don't call them intolerant because they disagree with me. They're intolerant because of the anger they have towards anyone on the right, or even in the centre.

It's amusing to watch them get their knickers in a twist but it's very sad that they think they can bully people into agreeing with them. It is what politicians have encouraged the masses to do - bicker amongst ourselves and the left have fallen hard for it.

Don't worry about Rayner being Deputy PM, she'll be PM within a couple of years then we'll be set for ruination, as with the extreme Left everywhere, and you can really start to worry.

Goodness, yes. Imagine Britain being represented on the world stage by someone who is working class instead of the usual privately educated types.

Genuine question to the shy Tory voters, as I don't know any who's done their come out. What have the Tories done for you in the past 14 years? What have they promised that's appealing to you (and that they couldn't have done in the past 14 years)? I don't want to hear about Labour or any other party. I want to know why the Tories. If you have valid reasons, surely there is no reason to be shy in your allegiance.

I’m not shy, I voted Conservative because I don’t want Labour. It’s a vote between a shit rock and a shit place, I went for the shit rock. Labour are going to win the seat in my area, and it’s a shame because our local Tory MP aligns with my values even if the party as a whole does not. The Labour candidate is just a mouthpiece for the Labour policies, nothing about local issues (which are huge, you’d understand if I shared where I live). When I messaged them about a particular issue they just parroted back party lines to me. I’m entitled to vote and of all the parties in my area, the Conservative candidate is the only one I feel truly cares about the people of our area.

AIstolemylunch · 04/07/2024 12:46

Some people i know are voting Tory tactically in margibal areas to try and rrduce the 'super majority' a bit so Labour are less likely to 'have a mandate' to do some of their more bonkers stuff. These people dont actually want them to win.

These people are also stupid. A supermajority isn’t a thing in British politics. A majority is a majority, and while a narrow one can limit what’s done, once you get a lightly more sizeable one you are sound. Johnson. Had an 80 seat majority. The Tories didn’t care about that, did they?

ImplacableDiscernment · 04/07/2024 14:06

How you vote is up to you.

What about underfunding of the public sector, particularly NHS, PPE corruption and Covid parties? I am not baiting you, I am truly interested in how you reconcile these actions.

I understand in a way. Maybe it all about being forward thinking about what is better for the future than these terrible things that have happened.

I will never vote for them. I don't ask my friends how they vote.

LostTheMarble · 04/07/2024 14:06

Shortfatsuit · 04/07/2024 14:05

That’s not what they meant and you know it.

Personally I think anyone who looks at the decisions and policies of the last almost decade and a half and thinks “yeah more of that please” should be embarrassed.
So many people in the country have been shafted and I guess you’re in the small percentage of people who prosper under the tories and you’re fine with that.

It's easy to be polite when you're rich, and benefiting isn't it? If you're on the breadline, can't feed your kids, queuing at food banks despite working your arse off full time, let's see how polite you'll be??
Oh and all while an entitled out of touch lying twerp goes on about sky TV and sandwiches 🤮

VoteLabour · 04/07/2024 14:07

What are this week's lottery numbers? Oh, maybe not.

Who would we have as PM in 6 months if we voted the Tories in?
