My 5yr old bumped her leg running up some wooden steps. She's having trouble putting weight on it now and is quite upset.

Any advice much appreciated

FFS take her to A+E

DontBiteTheCat · 03/07/2024 22:01

She needs to be seen.

A&E

Overthebow · 03/07/2024 22:01

You need to get her seen, especially as she’s not weight bearing well. A&E.

Aquamarine1029 · 03/07/2024 22:03

It's most likely a hematoma and will clear up on it's own, but given her age and her discomfort level, I would not hesitate to go to A&E to be sure it's not something more serious.

Coulddowithanap · 03/07/2024 22:04

Absolutely go to a&e .

Especially as she's only 5.

Sapphire387 · 03/07/2024 22:09

It looks like bad bruising to me... but did you actually see the accident happen? If she's genuinely struggling to weight bear, not doing that kiddy drama thing and then running off when she forgets about it... then I would give her painkillers and see about getting her seen by a doctor.

Gcsunnyside23 · 03/07/2024 22:13

How upset are we talking? And what is she currently doing? It's definitely a huge bruise and probably really sore and will be for a couple of days but that depends on how she currently is

79givenup67 · 03/07/2024 22:23

She couldn't put weight on it at all at first. Now she is walking a bit but limping. I'm thinking about phoning the docfirst thing tomorrow? Does that make me bad?

OP posts:
YouCanRingMyBellingham · 03/07/2024 22:36

She needs an X-ray. What's the point in phoning the gp, they'll only tell you to go and get an X-ray.

Ispini · 03/07/2024 22:52

Absolutely A&E. My daughter walked around on a fractured ankle for a couple of hours in school and her teacher told me she had fallen over and thought she had sprained it. I took her to the clinic and she ended up in a cast for 8 weeks with a fracture. Her poor teacher and school were mortified but she seemed genuinely fine. Some kids can cope with injuries more than others, Maybe because their bones aren’t as old and decrepit as us!
I hope she feels ok soon.

Jodie782 · 03/07/2024 22:54

Call 111

SantaBarbaraMonica · 03/07/2024 22:57

My son had one of those but twice as big from playing football with no shin guards. I was so shocked when I saw it! But it wasn’t broken or anything. So get it checked if she can’t bear weight but the mad lump is not necessarily a sign of a break.

vipersnest1 · 03/07/2024 23:00

I'm struggling to believe you are a genuine poster, tbh. If one of my DCs had come to me with this I'd have taken them straight away to A&E or a minor injuries unit with x-ray facilities straight away - I have done so in the past with DC2 when the school thought they had sprained their wrist. It was broken.

Turquoise19 · 03/07/2024 23:00

Yes waiting until tomorrow makes you ‘bad’. Go and get her seen at A&E for god sake. What do you think a GP is going to do, use their x-ray vision?

TBF my mum (ex nurse) wouldn't have even taken me to the doctor with that
I broke my ankle so badly it was facing the wrong way and she said to my dad "maybe it's not an a&e job?"
Me, and my dad simultaneously ConfusedConfusedConfused

Notchangingnameagain · 03/07/2024 23:10

This is something for MIU or A & E not GP.

vipersnest1 · 03/07/2024 23:12

@spikeandbuffy, my mum didn't believe that I was ill for two weeks when I had glandular fever..... It's part of the reason why if I had a sore throat for doubt in my mind I got it checked out for my DC.

Startrekkeruniverse · 03/07/2024 23:13

I’d take her to the GP in the morning if she’s unable to weight bear. Not an a&e job in my opinion but I’m not a doctor.

Allnewtometoo · 03/07/2024 23:14

I'm no medical expert but if she can walk on it, and isn't crying, I'd take her to get it seen in the morning.

vipersnest1 · 03/07/2024 23:20

a single

TheShellBeach · 03/07/2024 23:23

Please take her to A and E because she needs an X Ray.

Your GP can do nothing.
