Voting - quick advice !

Hi

Not an AIBU , but for traffic !

Moved house 2 years ago - didn’t vote last year . This time last year was a hard time - can’t even remember it being voting day .

Me and my husband strongly want to vote . We have had no cards come through . I emailed about this and was told we are not registered to vote at this address . They asked if their was another address we may be registered at so I gave my old address and have heard nothing back.

If I go to my local polling station with ID , but I’m not registered at this address , will I not be able to vote ? Should we go to the local polling station near my old address with ID ?

Not sure what to do , but feel very strongly about using our votes this year .

Thanks in advance !

You should have registered to vote at your new address. The deadline was about a week ago.

You might be able to get an emergency proxy vote by contacting your local council election team.

BusyCM · 03/07/2024 07:10

No you won't be able to. There's a deadline to register to vote and it was heavily publicised.

iamtheblcksheep · 03/07/2024 07:10

No you will not be able to vote at your local polling station and you are likely to have been removed at your old address too if you are no longer paying council tax there.

BeforeNextWeek · 03/07/2024 07:12

You could try the polling station at your old address just in case you're registered there, but it's definitely too late for your new address.

BusyCM · 03/07/2024 07:12

The deadline was 18th June and could be done online.

Goolagoo · 03/07/2024 07:42

Thank you everyone . Didn’t even hear about a deadline … my own fault I guess x

Contact the campaign office for the party you wanted to vote for and ask if they need help ferrying members to polling stations tomorrow?

GRex · 03/07/2024 08:07

You can register to vote today, then you'll be able to vote in the next elections. It's a shame you missed out, but obviously there has to be a registration process or people could just vote hundreds of times individually.

im not sure what you mean ? How would this allow me to vote ?

It wouldn't let you vote, but you might enable a car full of people who otherwise would not have made it to a polling station to vote for your candidate. So you are helping them more than you would by just voting yourself.

Lovely idea , but I work full time - I don’t have any time of an evening x

Lesson learnt, very surprised you did not enquire earlier.

blacksocks33 · 03/07/2024 20:36

You don't need to take your polling card to vote, just ID.
So can you not ring the council, find out where you're registered and go to the polling station there?

Did you miss this bit of the OP?

I emailed about this and was told we are not registered to vote at this address

blacksocks33 · 03/07/2024 20:40

@Merryoldgoat ahh sorry, yes I don't know how I missed that!

Coffeerum · 03/07/2024 20:41

Clearly not that strongly.

blacksocks33 · 03/07/2024 20:42

No sorry, just re read, I did actually get that! What I was meaning if they are still registered at their previous address can they not go to the polling station there?
I know it may involve voting for an MP that may not be in the area but it is still giving a vote 🤷🏼‍♀️
Not sure if this would/allowed.

I moved since my last vote and I rang up our council and they told me which address I was registered at.

mnahmnah · 03/07/2024 20:45

@blacksocks33

We thought DH hadn’t changed his address in time after moving recently, so we wondered if he could just go to the old polling station. But his ID is in the new address. Not sure if your ID needs matching address? Luckily we got confirmation it is all changed

They mostly likely won't be registered at their old address as the new owners will have removed them when they registered themselves. I'd imagine it's unlikely that they haven't done so, as it's potentially a fraud risk

blacksocks33 · 03/07/2024 20:55

@Butterflyfern @mnahmnah ahhhh fair enough!

I ordered a voting photo ID certificate from the council to vote tomorrow as my driving liscnce has my old address so I think I'm covered! I just need to remember to take it with me 🙈

LadyFeatheringt0n · 03/07/2024 20:58

The best you can do is try and vote near your old address you might still be listed. Its a long shot.

Take photo ID!!

HowIrresponsible · 03/07/2024 20:59

I moved house 2 months ago. I registered to vote here as soon the election called and my poll card came through a week ago

You've had 2 years to do it and no one to blame but yourself

NewName24 · 03/07/2024 21:50

But feel very strongly about using our votes this year

Well, clearly not that strongly, if you haven't got round to registering in two years. Particularly with all the publicity there has been this year about needing ID to vote, which would have prompted memories.

Asparename · 03/07/2024 21:57

Does your ID still have your old address on it? I think if I were you I’d be tempted to go to the old polling station and see if I was on the list there.

Coppercup · 03/07/2024 22:01

'Moved house 2 years ago - didn’t vote last year . This time last year was a hard time - can’t even remember it being voting day .'

Can't remember it being voting day? Do you think we have a general election every July?
