To think dermaplaning is risky!

Magpiesalute · 02/07/2024 22:55

I have a very fuzzy face. It’s the pale peach fuzz type but some bits are thicker than others and the whole thing really bothers me.

I want to try dermaplaning, but I’m scared it’ll grow back blunter and more obvious, or darker, so getting it done will lead to a lifetime of regular maintenance, I don’t want to have to shave my face daily!!

So mumsnet, for those of you who’ve tried it, what do you think? Has it made a big difference to your confidence? Does make up go on better? Should I take the plunge?

Am I being unreasonable to think it’s too risky?

I’d rather have fuzz than facial stubble

I don’t think it will grow back darker or thicker but it will certainly feel blunter and stubbier due to the natural thin end being cut off.

Magpiesalute · 02/07/2024 23:07

Yes, I’m worried about that. I just want to check in with people who’ve actually had it to see if they look and feel like desperate dan a few days afterwards.

Try it at home. I use votary razor wands. The hairs are so fine they don’t come back as stubble and make up looks so much better.

jelly79 · 02/07/2024 23:12

I've had dermaplaning several times and love it! Never grown back stubble

ridingfreely · 02/07/2024 23:17

It's changed my life! Doesn't grow back thicker, stubbly or darker. The peach fuzz just eventually returns. I do it myself and I makes my face so smooth

Proudmummy67 · 02/07/2024 23:20

I do it myself and it does grow back but not like stuble. But it does grow back quite slowly. I do think it is a lifetime of maintenance but you feel loads better for it. Your skin will be nicer and your make up defo goes on better. I probs do it about once a week at the most.

KreedKafer · 02/07/2024 23:20

It doesn’t grow back stubbly or darker! It just grows back as soft and peachy as before.

Just adding a question. Those who have done this, do you find you’ve had/got more spots. I’ve always been curious about doing this too but I’ve heard of acne outbreaks etc.

EsmeT · 02/07/2024 23:27

I do this myself and it doesn't grow back thick, it grows back as peach fuzz.

Nope, none at all. It’s actually better for the skin as if you do it after a shower, it essentially exfoliates the skin.

Toptotoe · 02/07/2024 23:58

I’ve had it done about 6 times -it makes my skin look good. No stubble in sight.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 03/07/2024 00:07

I do it myself - it’s fine doesn’t grow back as stubble.

PrincessConsuelaBag · 03/07/2024 00:10

I love it. Makes skin feel so much better. Make up also looks a hell of a lot better too!

DaisyTurvy · 03/07/2024 00:13

I do like at home. it doesn't grow back thicker and sometimes I just leave it to grow and notice no difference to before I started.

When I do it though it makes such a difference

Cryingatthegym · 03/07/2024 00:14

Yeah, no stubble or dark hair. Takes ages to grow back and comes back just as light and fine as before. You'll be fine, go for it!

Magpiesalute · 03/07/2024 08:20

Well this is very encouraging!! Thank you. I think I’m going to give it a try. I’ll get it done professionally the first time, but might then just do it myself.

Easy to do at home. Only do the areas you really need to don't get carried away. Thoroughly moisturise afterwards and keep clean from make up etc as my skin seems to be more susceptible to spots so I do it before bed so I can leave my face clean.

BrandNewBicep · 03/07/2024 09:34

I've done it and as others have said, the hair doesn't grow back stubbly. However, I did break out in little spots, so won't be doing it again. I have very sensitive skin and you only have to look at it the wrong way, and I breakout!

redalex261 · 03/07/2024 09:35

You are not unreasonable to worry about it, I did too. The peach fuzz cones back really slowly. Make up application is great afterwards and it exfoliates too. To avoid spots make sure face scrupulously clean also hands. I use a surgical scalpel (new each time) cleanse face and use AHA toner first. Then aloe or collagen gel to finish. No moisturiser!! Do it at night as face can be slightly red. Don’t keep going over same area. Pull skin taut before scraping. I now do mine and three friends! There are great utube videos on how to get good result. Only need to do mine every 3-4weeks. Oh. avoid during period if skin more sensitive then.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 03/07/2024 09:38

I love it. Mines grows back very quickly but I do it myself so easy to look after.

GateauxBlaster · 03/07/2024 10:24

Just don't have it threaded off. Once I'd had my eyebrows done and she gesticulated towards what I thought was my moustache and suggested she keep going so I consented but turns out she meant my moustache and entire face and fuck me it made me cry. And also bright red all over which at the beginning of a shopping trip wasn't great. Dermaplaning with those little razors in the comfort of your own home is a walk in the part compared to that.

redalex261 · 03/07/2024 10:29

@GateauxBlaster I agree, that was agony!!

Magpiesalute · 03/07/2024 12:57

Thanks everyone!

So easy to do at home and there’s no risk really in that you can’t really get it wrong! Hair just grows back the same as it was, not darker or stubbly . If you have any darker thick hairs they might stubble but peach fuzz does not.

LuckysDadsHat · 03/07/2024 13:17

I see these old wives tails all over the place about dermaplaning. How can cutting a hair at the surface level make it grow a different colour or thicker? You are not touching the root. Your hair on your head doesn't grow a different colour when you have it trimmed does it? It is the same principle.

It may feel a tiny bit stubbly due to you cutting the end and blunting the end basically. Although I can't say I have ever noticed it being stubbly and use dermaplaning all the time.
