Reregistered on MN to check out the SN board and possibly post for some thoughts. My old user name is no more and I have no idea if some of the old faces are still around, but I found my self thinking 'Do people still offer a biscuit?' 'Do people still vehemently argue their position of the order of knives, forks and spoons?' Do people still talk about the moldies?'

There was another thread that rings a bell about furniture legs....possibly Victorian furniture but I can't for the life of me remember...I do recall it making me chuckle a lot.

This has honestly made me so nostalgic.

You have to elbow your way past the MRAs and bots for the enjoyable bits, these days.

@OneOfThoseOldFashionedWomen But this isn’t about being pro-women. I’m pro-women. Our rights were hard fought and we bloody deserve them. I don’t feel that means that we should try and deny another vulnerable minority their rights too. And that’s the difference.

What rights are we trying to deny?

Wowwellokthen · 02/07/2024 23:27

The salads are definitely more massive.

BeachParty · 02/07/2024 23:43

I still give biscuits sometimes if posters deserve it though
Increasingly finding less and less people actually knowing what that means amateurs

Moonshiners · 02/07/2024 23:51

I've been here about 17 years. It's got a lot more aggressive, the feminist section used to be my favourite but it is obsessed about GC stuff above all else and seems to be full of people that can't seem to see anything else as being more important. (And I'm a terf through and through).
I'm glad its less middle class as it used to be quite Boden-tastic. It has moments of joy but is quite repetitive now.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/07/2024 23:51

If that's what you think this is about, you don't understand it. You don't get to tell me that single sex spaces aren't important to me, as a survivor of male violence, or that I should go along with complete bollocks to make some men feel better.

It is about being pro women, and standing up for what's right. You have your opinion and priorities, and that's fine. We don't all agree.

Soupy the bat! Had to search to see if I remembered the name correctly!

So many blasts from the past....I remember the birth of the Biscuit, didn't Gordon Brown make a visit? Hmm

Agree re the arse handing, and the trolling was rife...I recall one about a ski trip but can't remember specifics?

Yes, that's how I remember the biscuit
That's how it was "birthed" if I remember correctly.
He wouldn't say what his favourite biscuit was
Hence the biscuit being "no comment" 😁

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/07/2024 23:56

It used to be fun. Full of quick humour.

Now it’s not like that. Bit aggressive and spiteful.

tobee · 03/07/2024 01:24

Don't know how long I've been here.

It's mostly about telling people off now.

Kai125 · 03/07/2024 01:42

Been here 20 years, but change my username every month.

Actually it's time for my July change!

Absolutely not as funny, but you do sometimes get the occasional funny thread.

FWR is still as amazing as ever and will should down in history as helping make life safer for women and girls. 💜💚🤍

Never read an ant-trans comment at all.

I'm on here very single day, but left to for 2 years during Covid. It was mental!

And during Brexit. People foaming at the mouth. Nutters!

Still my go to place when I need to rant, or need advice or just need the support of some wonderful vipers.

I've mentioned the bat a couple of times over the last few years but no one commented. Thought I was one of the last who remembered.

I'd be lost without mumnset! I really would!

And I've got loads of real life mates too, so don't know why I love it so much!

Anyway. Welcome back!

I remember, anyfucker, dadslib getting it on with a mumsnetter at maybe a ball, meeting up for pizza in London.

It was friendly and supportive, less debate than now and people I think were more polite.

J0S · 02/07/2024 20:39

I’ve been on MN for 21 years ( I name change often as an ex tries to stalk me ).

When I was first here we had baby pasta and photos of a bat.

Oh yes. I remember baby paste.

readingismycardio · 03/07/2024 04:18

I just realised I've been reading mumsnet pretty much every day since 2014! Wow!

merrymelodies · 03/07/2024 04:33

I've been here for 20 odd years and of course it's changed. Society has changed and MN is largely a reflection of society.

echt · 03/07/2024 04:35

There was a thread about two weeks ago that dug up info on the old faces and how much MN had changed, possibly check that one out, OP.

merrymelodies · 03/07/2024 04:45

And you can always check out the classics! Definitely funnier back then and there were fewer of us, so it felt safe and comforting. Clique-y but not much different from school, tbh.

Aconite20 · 03/07/2024 04:47

England was literally a different country in 2005. In fact Earth was a different planet. It's far more densely populated and older and far more jaded now, with less optimism about future and humans in general. Or are those last two just me?!

Every now and then I like to read old charming threads like Korean granny in the garden.

Oblomov24 · 03/07/2024 04:53

When did you leave and why? What made you come back after such a long time?

lifesrichpageant · 03/07/2024 04:57

I've been on for about the same amount as you OP. With long periods of absence and then coming back. It seems to have become more mean-spirited and conservative (maybe like the UK in general?) than the old days. Fewer bouquets and flowers, less nuance. My impression.

Monty27 · 03/07/2024 05:19

Anyone remember the online date arranged for the penguin park. It went live literally. Oh it had me crying 🤣🤣

DogsDinner · 03/07/2024 05:50

It’s interesting, because I notice one poster remembers MN being very anti benefits in the old days, whereas I remember the opposite!

20 years ago, posters would come onto threads about benefits and tell people to mind their own business, and then take over the thread with nonsense conversations. Now, I notice a lot more disapproval of people having kids they ‘can’t afford’, or claiming UC instead of working more hours.

So I guess it’s all in the perception! Or what boards you frequent.

There seem to be more threads these days which remind me that despite the cost of living crisis, there really are plenty of staggeringly well off people in this country. I remember more working class posters in the past, but that might be because they were so prolific.

I still like mumsnet after 20 years because it’s so fast moving, there’s always something interesting to read, and it can be very informative.

Devilsmommy · 03/07/2024 06:00

Deadringer · 02/07/2024 20:41

I agree with this. The main difference I have found is that posters seem to be much quicker to take offence, one of the things I loved most when I first joined MN was that people would get their arse handed to them over something they posted and they would respond in kind, or occasionally admit being in the wrong, but now everyone seems to take huge offence at anyone who disagrees with them.

I agree with this. Everyone seems to be "triggered" by anything nowadays 😅

Yes it was Gordon brown and jammy dodgers IIRC.

I don’t remember the ski trip one but I remember a regular troll called lavenderrrrrr with multiple rrrs . When she came onto a thread everyone would start talking about baby pasta.

I also agree, people used to discuss the actual point that they disagreed with, now they just try to dismiss and silence others with labels and name calling . I guess that’s true of many parts of the public sphere now 🙁
