To ask you to have a word with me

DD 8yo wants to cut off all her hair. I KNOW this isn't something I should get steamed up about. I had short hair as a kid, it grows back etc etc.
BUT for some reason I care. If Im being honest I really don't want her to do it. She wants to have hair like Bill in Mallory Towers, but DD hair is fine and straight. She keeps saying she wants 'boys' hair.
Ive booked her into my hairdressers on saturday, and Ive tried to look at inspiration photos but I cant find anything that doesnt make me shudder a bit.

I dont know what my problem is. Please have a word with me, and also tell me what to say to the hairdresser!

@Slowhorses1 What did DD end up doing? What do you think of it?

ive been thinking so much about this. I think if the trans issue didn’t loom so large generally I probably wouldn’t be giving it a second thought. It sounds totally daft but it’s hard not to read into any subtext given the current climate around gender etc.

Honestly I wouldn't jump to conclusions about this right now. At her age I was obsessed with George from The Famous Five and desperately wanted to be like her, wear dungarees like boys rather than pretty dresses.
Ultimately it didn't mean anything.

If you want her to be able to express her desire for things that are stereotypically boyish, don't insist she can't have boyish hair.

This is why so many girls think they must be boys: because they're told that Girls Can't Like These Things. Two hundred years ago they were called hoydens, a hundred years ago they were called tomboys; but now they're told they don't really exist.

Your daughter has seen a role model for a girl that does exist. That's a good thing.

(although I'm very fond of a pixie cut myself. Carey Mulligan around the time of the Great Gatsby film, or Victoria Beckham I believe was a bit of a trendsetter. And it's REALLY simple to look after. Have you asked her whether she likes that?)

needhelpwiththisplease · 13/07/2024 11:00

Can't you use one of those online tools that will show her how she will look with chosen style?
Then maybe let her play about with it till she finds something she definitely wants and is happy

PBandJ111 · 13/07/2024 11:02

No way! Have a sneaky word with hairdresser and her to convince your kid she’d be stupid to have such a haircut.

We’re at the hairdressers now! Will update. He’s starting slow with a very very short bob and if she wants more off then she can say he’ll do it. We took his advice about what would work best!

So she ended up getting a super short bob just below her ears. She seems happy with it and the hairdresser was lovely, so all good. Thanks for all the advice, it was a helpful sounding board!
