To think that protein shakes / powder can make you shit yourself (or is it just me)??

I'm in gimmer territory and am always trying to look at increasing my protein intake so that all the muscles in my body don't completely disappear. I have been supplementing my meals with a whey protein shake. I have also been suffering from nearly shitting myself. There is no elegant way to put this.

I was thinking I would have to go to the GP, as I was really struggling with what I can only describe as leakage. I've already had a sizeable repair up my bum, as having DS's giant head dragged out with forceps and DD's slightly smaller head ripping through me did untold damage to my internal passages.

I was worried that I needed another repair, but went away for a long weekend where I stopped having the protein supplements and the leakage issues disappeared too. I tried to reintroduce the shakes and it started again, so I know that it is definitely connected.

Has anyone else had this problem with protein supplements? Am I being unreasonable to think that there might possibly need to be some kind of warning on these things to say, "You may shit yourself if you take this supplement"?

@shearwater2 convenient that you ignore most the factors that I mentioned. Just because something is easy to write down doesn't make it reality. And just because it's easy to do for one day doesn't mean it's easy to do day in day out. But please, give yourself a pat on the back for being best in class.

MargoLivebetter · 02/07/2024 13:37

@shearwater2 could you do an example of a day for me. I really struggle at breakfast to eat 30g of protein. At lunch I have tinned tuna or salmon or some ham with a salad. In the evening I have a portion of meat or fish. I manage to get to 40-60g relatively easily, but I think at 55 and hoping to retain muscle mass, I need to be consuming more. I don't do weights, but I do resistance exercise, body weight exercises and pilates most days, along with lots of walking.

I like Arla protein yoghurts. 20g of protein per pot, sweetened with stevia not sucralose.

I think you most be a protein shake shill.

How about plain greek yoghurt with nuts for breakfast?
Or eggs with cottage cheese, or an omelette with ham and cheese?

@andHelenknowsimmiserablenow if I am having brunch, I can eat all of those things, but they just make me want to gip before about 1030. I'm not sure why exactly but porridge with an egg mixed in is about the closest I can come to any of those things you have suggested.

Sure.

It's a shame you don't get on with quark as that is amazing as a breakfast food and has half the protein. Have you tried having it with plenty of fibre, as it's sometimes low fibre that causes the diarrhoea?

Anyway something like muesli, Greek yogurt, fruit and a few nuts would be 30g.

Salad, three portions of salad veg with two protein sources for lunch - cheese, ham, chicken, prawns, salmon, mackerel, beans, pulses.

Dinner - 3 egg cheese omelette, and beans, say.

Not tons of calories either and should hit 100g protein and around 30g fibre with that also.

MargoLivebetter · 02/07/2024 14:05

Thank you @Catmummyof2 . That's pretty good going.

Thank you @shearwater2 . I'm not great on beans either. No one wants to be in a room with me after any kind of legume consumption!!!! I think I must have a slightly irritable bowel as this thread is making me realise that there are quite a lot of foods I have to avoid!

@shearwater2 shame you can't even bother to read the posts of the people you're here to insult. I don't know what it is about the smugness on aibu at times.

@MargoLivebetter porridge with a small amount of chopped nuts and a snack of mini babybels, or the low fat Greek yogurt or Arla yogurts another poster mentioned above are my go to (Lindahls as well, though not sure off the top of my head re the ingredients). If I'm eating later then an omelette especially if I can incorporate meat left over from the previous nights dinner, but I can't manage savoury first thing.
I also quite like using mini wraps with avocado, cold chicken and beef brisket (the very thin slices you'd find next to the ham in the supermarket) I know that's not obviously breakfasty but the small portion and it being relatively plain tasting means I can manage that on the way to work and it stops me feeling hungry for a good while.

MargoLivebetter · 02/07/2024 14:22

Thank you @Proteinpud . I'm going to have a think about breakfast as I think this is my downfall.

I'm dieting using (probably not the smartest thing) pretty much exclusively powders.

I've found that the casein is the thing that REALLY clogs you up... I mean, that's pretty much the point of taking it. It forms almost a gel ball inside your stomach, which is slow to digest, and thus trickles the amino acids to your body, so you get a steady stream of them rather than peaks and troughs... so great for an overnight source. If you take it pure, you definitely need fibre!

As for whey, on its own, you're pretty safe as long as you don't have trouble digesting milk etc, then it will probably give you the sh!ts.

If you're being a dummy like me, then taking whey on its own so you're maintaining a steady stream of protein, but reduced carbs to help dieting, you're not really bulking out your stomach much, and you're taking a lot of water too, so you'll probably feel a bit of run-through.

AzureSheep · 02/07/2024 14:23

If breakfast is a challenge, can you have your normal breakfast and then at around 10:30ish have protein heavy snack (Aldi protein yoghurts / puddings are great if you can tolerate those)? Cook extra chicken breast when you’re cooking dinner and snack on that during the following day? Maybe make some mackerel pate (blend some up with cream cheese, herbs, bit of lemon juice basically) and have it on oatcakes.

Also, some collagen powders have about 18g protein per serving - you could try that instead of protein shakes? I’ve got a cranberry flavour one which just tastes like squash, but you can get completely clear flavourless ones and mix it in with your morning coffee.

MargoLivebetter · 02/07/2024 14:27

Thanks @AzureSheep . I usually have a protein pudding / mousse / yoghurt at about 0930 to 1000. Depending on which one I have that gives me 15-20g of protein. I shall investigate the collagen powders. I've never thought of that.

How would overnight oats be?
I have oats, spoon of yogurt, splash of skim milk and a scoop of vegan protein powder. Mix it up, good to go. I can’t stomach any protein shakes but vegan powder works for me, no nausea, no stomach upsets.
A smoothie with a scoop of powder works well too to get some extra protein

MargoLivebetter · 02/07/2024 14:33

Tried overnight oats @user1471556642 but the texture was too slimy. I have taught myself how to make porridge in a way that doesn't repel me. I was adding a scoop of protein powder to the porridge but that is what was making me crap my pants 😬💩. I'm going to see if I could tolerate the veggie protein powder though.

Because you can’t eat quark it sounds like you have a dairy intolerance. Most adults do, tbh. Wee bits in your tea probably sneak through, but whey protein is super-concentrated. Swap over to a collagen powder. The fish-based are a bit sandy imo go for the bovine ones. They’re clear and tasteless. You can dump a teaspoon or two in your tea or coffee or add to juice or squash. Don’t believe the palaver that they’ll have your skin looking like a 12 year old by Thursday, but increasing water and protein really does help improve the appearance of your skin. (You’re not going to look like the next Kardashian without millions of dollars of surgery, sorry.)

DedicatedCakeEater · 02/07/2024 14:44

Can't you just have a bit of chicken or something? Grin

MargoLivebetter · 02/07/2024 14:45

thank you @Fraaahnces . I think you are probably right about dairy. Even cottage cheese isn't overly well tolerated or too much Greek yoghurt.

I will look at bovine collagen and rest assured, I'd rather look like me than any Kardashian! 😂

Sweeteners can cause one or more of: bloating, diarrhoea, gas, pain, feeling nauseous..... so it's possibly that.

CollyBobble · 02/07/2024 14:48

I sometimes am a little underweight and can look too thin so I have boost with this to put weight back k on -

@EinekleineKatze I'm coming to the conclusion I'm probably a bit intolerant to sweeteners and too much milk based products!
