AMIB to ask high school to rethink banning skirts for year 7?

AIBU… My daughters about to start high school and they have decided to introduce a new uniform policy with no skirts allowed for just the year 7’s. The years above them can have the choice! This seems grossly unfair. I'm sure its not following the guidelines correctly. Has anyone else come across this?

@Abouttimeforanamechange to be honest I rarely see teenage girls in really tiny shorts either - unless they're sports ones.

LlynTegid · 02/07/2024 20:39

If it is being phased in so throughout your DDs time at the school it will be trousers, I would be supportive.

Skirt length is a minefield. I don't think it is good for girls and young women to be sitting awkwardly or frequently having to adjust clothing to be modest, even in an all-female environment.

elvive · 02/07/2024 20:40

OH MY GOD

the latest thing is to wear shorts with the skirt as a frill

I am sick of walking upstairs behind someones arse

It's interesting that frightenedmum1 thinks asking a headteacher to reconsider a policy that will impact female students is interfering. Community consultation is pretty standard these days including in schools. It's somewhat outdated way of thinking about education. If skirts are out, get rid of the whole ridiculous concept of school uniform. All that polyester 😩

In theory I agree with you, but i know a no uniform benefits the more wealthy who can afford ranges of clothing.Disadvantaged kids hate non. uniforn days

On the other hand wearing normal clothes every day (eg in europe) seems to remove over skimpy clothing from normal wardrobes

Mates in London in non uniform primaries ( oddly popular there) say that the pressure to have certain bits of kit can be tough

Needmorelego · 02/07/2024 20:44

@LlynTegid if girls wore school skirts properly then there would be no need for sitting awkwardly.
I wish I could understand why it's such a fashion. On many girls it's not so much about the risk of flashing your pants - it's just an incredibly unflattering look.
I just don't understand it. I find it baffling.

Makes checking uniform much easier, and less difficult for male staff

oh yes, best police teenage girls’ clothing to make life easier for men !!

I have heard girls say exactly that to male and female staff this week. And every other week.

I work in a school where every single day we are battling girls from year 7 upwards who are wearing skirts so short you can see their bum cheeks. Literally. No exaggeration. Not even just their knickers. It is constant. How anyone can argue that is acceptable is beyond me.

elvive · 02/07/2024 20:49

I think all the staff should dress like that to make them see how it looks

LOL

Needmorelego · 02/07/2024 20:52

@TheBottomsOfMyTrousersAreRolled perhaps all the girls should have to do a workshop to give sensible reasons why they do it.
Make them seriously think about. It would be interesting to hear their reasons.

Not sure I understand, girls wear shorts under their skirts because it covers them. What's frilly about that?

There is only one reason for the very short skirts. Peer influence. That's it. It's seen as the only socially acceptable way to wear a school skirt ATM. Having a skirt that's not as rolled up is total social embarrassment. I don't like the trend either but forcing trousers is not great.

Needmorelego · 02/07/2024 21:01

@elvive the shorts under a skirt style was called "PE kit" in my day 😂

Schools make their own guidelines, what guidelines are you talking about? Also, what difference does a skirt/trousers make to your child's education?

Newsenmum · 02/07/2024 21:05

I wish it was just trousers for everyone tbh.

elvive · 02/07/2024 21:05

I would say this isnt an argument about uniform - they have gone on forever
If you choose a school with rules you have to go along with it - same way I have to enforce rules I moght not agree with as oart of my contract

its the fashion for girls to walk around in pants

Teacherprebaby · 02/07/2024 21:06

MaggyMays · 02/07/2024 13:23

Yes, the trouser style is not negotiable either at our school. They have to be tailored trousers which don’t suit or comfortably fit every shape. The supermarket designs don’t always fit to size . Fun times 😂

Yes, huge huge deal indeed 🙄

No the next step will be even more staff leaving and the quality of education falling because parents argue with absolutely every rule ever put in place because they have decided that their little darling should never ever be upset or disappointed or inconvenienced in any way for some reason.

Absolutely couldn't have said it better. Parents need to wake up.

Whiteblouse · 02/07/2024 15:55

Sounds like a school with poor discipline and leadership. Schools, with 1-2 k children need to be tightly managed. Skirts are not the issue, lack of respect is due to a poor school culture. Teens can be rude, grumpy and rebellious, it's nature. If their grown ups can't manage them, the school has to. That starts with the SLT. If these girls weren't rude and rebellious about their skirts, they'd kick off about something else. This whole drama is pure misogyny.

OP, do campaign for skirts, please do.

Please go on...you're an expert on schools I take it?

Thanks all. Great feedback. I'm not battling with them, I didn't originally explain that I just wanted a reason behind the decision as to why not apply new rule to all, and it to be communicated more effectively. The school is a through school and the girls wear black skirts in both campuses, so I already have uniform for the bottom half for my child going up to year 7 which comprises of skirts.
The new policy was not communicated to all parents by email or published on their website, so its unclear. I thought the uniform should be ‘fair to all’ according to the education hub .GOV website? Maybe I'm not understanding correctly what this means.
They told the kids first, at a transition assembly and my daughter came home telling me about it, hence I questioned it? School didn't explain the change properly or what the phasing in process looked like at the parents evening 1 day later, which some could not attend. So it was a complete surprise to some parents who have only just found out through their kids talking about it. So not sure this is quite right? I understand some changes are important but it seems a bit late to tell parents who are already part of the through school in year 6 and have uniform in place.
It’s a phasing in measure starting this year with year 7 onwards. They are yet to send an email to all existing school and new parents and as much as I don't like the new rule, and I am not expecting them to change their minds, at least communicate with more professionalism and urgency.

Thanks for the links. Appreciate your views, really helpful x

Well, to be fair on the school, they have tempered the communication somewhat, as the internal narrative is going to be

'We do not want to see another 150 sets of arse cheeks appearing between the bus stop and the front gate by October, thank you very much'.

Needmorelego · 02/07/2024 21:13

@elvive yes but the OP chose that school before this rule was announced.
Bit unfair to change the rules after the act.

elvive · 02/07/2024 21:16

Yeah - but cant change anythingi n 5 years?

Needmorelego · 02/07/2024 21:16

@Teacherprebaby I think everyone should be entitled to wear clothes that actually fit them and are comfortable.
Unfortunately many "school trousers" simply don't fit the many different shapes and sizes of teenage girls.

Riversideandrelax · 02/07/2024 21:17

My DD likes wearing trousers but even she likes to wear a skirt in the warm weather. They have a rule the skirt has to be on the knee, though so no super short skirts.

I don't think schools should specify a particular style. My DD wears the stretchy jersey kind that she finds very comfortable.

So school shorts instead of school skirts? Or wide flappy shorts under skirts?

Or just shorts outside of school? 🤔
