To think that complacency will bring us down?

Sondheimisademigod · 02/07/2024 08:13

There seems to be an assumption that Labour are going to sail into Numbers 10 and 11 (sadly not No. 9!) on Thursday as if by magic.
Brexit happened because most people thought it was a bonkers idea that no-one could posdibly countenance except for a few 'little-englanders', and therefore no point in voting remain.
We are being told that the Tories are over, but I am deeply sceptical; complacency gets us into so much shite...
So please do vote, even if you are voting tory, or whatever. Please don't be complacent!

I think you’re entirely right. The only thing Sunak has said that is correct in his entire career is ‘noone has cast a vote yet’ (except of course he got that wrong too, as postal votes have largely already been sent in 😆).

I also feel quite strongly that, even though tactical voting is likely to be at an all time high, it’s still going to be lower than pundits think, and that will help the tories. People are better informed but I still see some (notably various party apparatchiks) claiming they are best placed when they probably aren’t. We only have to look at the by-elections over this parliament to see it’s not as simple as some (Labour are particularly guilty of this) might claim.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 02/07/2024 08:20

I think labour has done more to turn people away from voting for them than the tories have. This is a mistake many make just before an election, I think die-hard tories are still going to vote Tory and the labour vote is divided. We saw from the last election that reform are not a serious party in the eyes of most tories and won’t split the vote the same.

I think starmer will be in No 10 this year but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Tory again. Most likely a hung parliament I think.

ll09sm · 02/07/2024 08:21

Nice try Labour HQ. But the election is done and dusted. The Tories have already handed you over an overwhelming victory. It makes no difference whether the undecided vote or not.

RedOrBlueOrYellow · 02/07/2024 08:22

YANBU

Voter turn out is important. Many don't bother to vote, then whinge.

Some of the claims such as 'super majority ' latest soundbite ate an attempt to scare people into voting for more of the same. Some people hate change and worry about it, rather than thinking better things may follow.

iamtheblcksheep · 02/07/2024 08:22

I can’t stand the smugness of you who are voting labour but unlike remainers will accept the result for what it is.

Keir Starmer is going to raid your pensions, your savings, your child’s education if you pay for it. If you have worked your arse off and have a comfortable life he’s coming for you.

Do everything you can now to put it out of his reach.

2dogsandabudgie · 02/07/2024 08:24

You lost me at your derogatory "little Englanders".

TisTheSummerSeason · 02/07/2024 08:25

The less idiots we have out and about voting labour and allowing the abuse of children (because supporting the trans problem is exactly what that is) the better.

I'm not voting Labour but I can't stand the lies and exaggerations of the Tories. Taxes are at a 80 YEAR HIGH and 14 years of rubbish but still parrot they are the best for the country. Delusional.

You’re clearly guzzling on the Tory disinfo teat. Just repeat the smears, that’ll do…

CelesteCunningham · 02/07/2024 08:27

I don't see any other outcome than a decisive Labour victory, but I wouldn't want to bet on just how decisive or how many seats any other parties get.

Must be a tremendously difficult election for the pollsters.

Greenismyfav · 02/07/2024 08:33

The only thing Labour has to do to get my vote is to promise to reserve single sex spaces and female sports for biological women. It won’t do that, which is so bloody chilling. They don’t seem to understand how horrifying this is. There are no other parties I can vote for and even the independents seem a bit crazy in my constituency. A spoiled ballot it is then. Shame on them!

I don’t care who you vote for. I really don’t and I’m not pathetic enough to try and influence someone else’s vote.

I will warn others that’s let’s be honest are voting conservative anyway to do everything they can to keep THEIR money out of Starmers clutches.

It’s not going to be the bed of roses for anyone that earns a half decent living. There is no magic money tree so he’s either lying about what he’s going to do or he needs to raise some serious cash from somewhere.

Staplerandstappler · 02/07/2024 08:36

It won’t happen, but if the Lib Dems get more seats than the Tories, as some polls suggest, I might need the following day off work so I’ve got time stop laughing.

I don't think any party currently guarantees single sex spaces. I would think that it needs raising more so more people consider it important enough that politicians listen. Do a majority worry about this issue - I don't think so. They clearly don't at present.

Didimum · 02/07/2024 08:38

I disagree. You get your complacent voters either way – those who wouldn’t vote Labour who now won’t vote as they think their vote doesn’t matter and those who would vote Labour who don’t vote because they think it’s a foregone conclusion.

You also get your voters who are incredibly pumped up for voting day precisely because their vote matter and those who will battle against it regardless.

These a relatively small numbers who by and large balance each other out.

They really should be scared. Flashing in public is a crime of sexual violence and yet nurses in Durham and Fife are expected to experience this crime of sexual violence and just put up with it. This is not ok at all.

Brexit happened because most people thought it was a bonkers idea that no-one could posdibly countenance except for a few 'little-englanders', and therefore no point in voting remain.

That's the common narrative, not the facts. It didn't involve 'a few' people, turnout was 72 percent - that was the highest turnout for a national 'election' since 1997. The majority of people thought it was a good idea, that's why we got the result we did. The above impression is common because the Brexit voices are ones you rarely hear. Many of them are in poor communities that feel left behind and voiceless. My soundings from those people indicate that many of them don't intend to vote this time round. Don't blame them, blame the politicians for being uninspiring and for failing to deliver on their 'jam tomorrow' promises. The ones that do intend to vote seem attracted to Reform. The strength of FPTP voting is that we probably won't end up with many Reform MPs. At least not this time round...

Didimum · 02/07/2024 08:48

I also wish forlorn Tories would stop bleating on about Labour raising taxes.

Can they get their head around the fact that if it means my energy bills aren’t doubled, that my mortgage can eventually settle under 5% and I can get a fucking ambulance when I’m dying then yes, mate, have an extra £20 a month, be my guest.

Hummingbird75 · 02/07/2024 08:49

You do know nothing will change under Labour.

If anyone even took a cursory glance at the country's finances they would know we have all been living beyond our means for years! There is no extra magic money tree that will provide a world class NHS with the number of people using the service and the ageing population. I fear the crushing reality is going to sink in very fast, and Labour are going to be next to useless in a crisis or running the economy or doing anything meaningful beyond putting women in our place.

Putin is publicly celebrating the idea of a Labour government, but he is the only one as far as I can see! US and EU - radio silence.

Anyone astute enough is very informed that it will take any government years and years to make headway. And if they aren’t astute enough to realise that then … well, they will be unhappy no matter what.

The difference is the majority of voters would rather be going through a shit time with a government that has an ounce of integrity, moral obligation and decency. I can’t even count the number of deplorable Tory scandals over the last 14yrs, so many that we’ve become desensitised to them.

Staplerandstappler · 02/07/2024 08:55

It’s like supporting a football team - I don’t mind if they lose, as long as they’re trying.

Its going to be shit for a while anyway, but it would be nice to have a competent government who are at least trying to move it in the right direction, with some actual values.

So you agree nothing is going to change - good.

At least you seem to be rooted in reality and not being carried away on this current sea of false hope everyone else has been spoon fed.

It is not about making headway over countless years, there is not going to be headway at all.

You are voting for their 'moral compass and decency'? Is that a joke when they are just about to remove women's rights from 51% of the population and are about as militant as they get when it comes to everybody's rights but ours? I am stunned you would think this is any way anything other than immoral.

coldcallerbaiter · 02/07/2024 09:00

Can we clear up exactly what Labour intend to do with savings?
I see soundbites everywhere, I want to actually know.

What values? Like putting trans before girls and women?

It could be more than shit for a while, it could be a total disaster for the economy and for the future of our children, but don't let the actual facts stand in the way. Labour's track record of overspending on vanity projects really does speak for itself.
