To want to cry at my sister's washing?

She has three girls and is currently on holiday with them. I'm house sitting until next weekend and there's washing everywhere. I've filled four ikea bags and still have a pile that's filled the bath. I'm planning to get it washed and dried for her but I'm honestly looking at the pile and don't know where to start. She has a washer dryer and it's taking ages per load (no laundries around here, just forecourt washers that are like £10 a wash!)

No she hasn't asked me specifically to do it but she was complaining about the state of her house last week so I know she won't mind. She's been struggling with her MH lately and having it looming over her can't be helping! And she's starting a new full time job next week so if I leave it it'll never get done!

Eco would be shorter wouldn't it?

@Sagarmatha eco programmes tend to be longer, not shorter. They use less energy cos they heat up water slowly

ZoomDoomZoom · 30/06/2024 21:30

Eco on my Bosch is a longer wash, almost 3 hrs. I put on a load at teatime so it's ready to hang overnight. Then programme a delayed timed wash to finish at 8am next day to hang out another load before leaving for work.

Shybutrude · 30/06/2024 21:32

@summeroccupation @katiemarnie is correct I've got the same washer (or a slightly older version) but still being aware of overloading it. The fast wash is literally for a few items so may not be the bast option .
The mixed load on mine is under and hour

Jeez I must be the dullest person on the planet because this all sounds so bloody exciting to me! I’d actually be in my element tackling all this and sorting it all out. The weather is on your side OP and you have plenty of time so don’t stress. You should be able to get 3 loads done and dried outside per day and maybe one load on the indoor clothes horse. Get all the dirty stuff piled high in one room, go round the house and double check you’ve got everything then just sort into smaller piles by colour and just work your way through it one load at a time. Once it’s clean and dry fold it all up into piles by person that they belong to.

I agree with you (not being the dullest, but the exciting bit) I love doing laundry and in fact I get paid to do so for one of my customers. And when they go on holiday I'm allowed to catch up on all the laundry and fold/rearrange the drawers. 😂

DedicatedCakeEater · 30/06/2024 21:37

It's lovely of you, but maybe offer to help her declutter, or it will happen again.

@summeroccupation
Does she have a washing line much easier and quicker to dry. ?
does she have clothes hangers to hang around t the house. ?
I must admit I swear by a heated clothes arier can you afford to purchase her one of those . Make both your lives easier .
very cheap to run . Pennies!

Yes, she has two big lines and a heated airer. Using all three atm 😁

Thank god for sisters like you OP!

Nazzywish · 30/06/2024 21:42

And definitely do the declutter with her whilst the clothes are clean and can be taken to a charity shop or sold on vinted etc. Toys too! Makes life much happier all around

You’ve got a whole week, so as the mother of three children, I’d say pace yourself. Two loads each day and hang them. If you have good weather they should dry overnight, then you can sort and fold them before you hang the next loads.

Are you planning on ironing too?

She had a steamer that's brilliant and much quicker than ironing 😁

@summeroccupation as someone who has struggled with MH can I just say what you are doing is amazing, getting things sorted for her before she starts a new job, will give her a chance to get to get into a
new routine with a clean slate……you are a star.

fiftyandfat · 30/06/2024 21:44

I wouldn't bother with the dryer function at all.
Sort and 2 to 3 loads per day.
Use the mixed load and fast spin.
Find as many coat hangers as you can and suitably ventilated places to hang things up. I have a lot of cheap wire hangers just for laundry, you can peg socks and underwear on them and hang them on a shower rail or curtain rail.
The weather is good, so it should be possible to get things dry by hanging them up on the airer and in doorways or anywhere you can, leave the windows open.
I don't think ironing is essential.
If using the heated airer throw a sheet or duvet cover over the top, it helps stuff dry faster.

Copperoliverbear · 30/06/2024 21:44

I go to the forecourt ones and do it all and dry it in the garden and then spend the rest of the time deep cleaning and anything that need throwing, throw it.

ItsbecauseofWhirlJack · 30/06/2024 21:44

OP, are you absolutely sure your sister won’t mind you using so much electricity?
load after load of washing and using heated airer etc I know you mean well but what if she gets a big electric bill and isn’t happy? Maybe part of the reason the washing has piled up is because she’s trying to keep her bill down.

Shutupandsitdown · 30/06/2024 21:44

It will also dry quicker if you do a second spin only after the wash has finished. It’s a game changer in my house in terms of getting it all dry!

Pippa12 · 30/06/2024 21:45

Just a heads up, the forecourt washers near my home are often used to wash horse bedding etc, they stink! Double check them before you use them.

Your doing an amazing thing for your sister!

Perfect, that should dry quite quickly. When that’s done, fold and put another load or two on.

Does she iron? I don’t do absolutely wouldn’t be ironing anyone else’s stuff!!

Sorenlorrenson · 30/06/2024 21:46

What's a forecourt washer ?

Candlesandmatches · 30/06/2024 21:46

Does the filter in her dryer need cleaning? It can make a much longer drying time if it’s covered in lint.

Barbaquequeen · 30/06/2024 21:46

summeroccupation · 30/06/2024 20:11

I'm honestly thinking about giving her house a deep clean! I've only really been downstairs lately and only nipped up to find the cat for her meds. Didn't realise how bad it had got! 😣

What a kind thing to do for her children as much as for her sister. It might be the act of kindness that lifts her to getting better systems in place and can only have a positive impact on the children’s well being

Copperoliverbear · 30/06/2024 21:47

You must be able to find a quicker wash economy comes off the water tank too I think x

Acapulco12 · 30/06/2024 21:47

That is so kind of you ❤️❤️

ZoomDoomZoom · 30/06/2024 21:50

Sorenlorrenson · 30/06/2024 21:46

What's a forecourt washer ?

@Sorenlorrenson a laundrette or an external laundrette in the forecourt of a shopping centre or external premises lile a hostel.

FriendofDorothy · 30/06/2024 21:51

What is your sister doing whilst you are doing all her washing for her?

justasking111 · 30/06/2024 21:52

Our launderette is busy on rainy days, people wash at home and use the big dryers there. You can fold hot and fill IKEA bags.
