To be sick of cyclists making pedestrians feel unsafe

Life is so much worse than it was ten years ago in cities precisely because of this

Maybe if cyclists paid a tax, there would be better infrastructure. My DH is a keen cyclist so I'm not being one sided.

Something would have to happen, the money doesn't come out of thin air. It would be difficult to manage and might put people off cycling, it's probably something that should be encouraged though.

midgetastic · 30/06/2024 13:18

Strictly speaking it is much harder for a cyclist to kill a pedestrian than a car driver to kill either and its drivers who kill most of both cyclists and pedestrians

Netherless all people should take care of others whatever the mode of transport and shared spaces seem to work very badly

Although in the Netherlands it's amazing how well they all rub along

Cyclists do not rule the road

They kind of do, though. They face no consequences for their bad driving, or for injuring people.

Incorrect myth

Cherrysoup · 30/06/2024 13:20

What I hate is entitled cyclists ringing their bell to get people to move, notably parents with babies in pushchairs! Get on the fucking road, idiot cyclist! You’re not supposed to be on the bloody pavement!

Supersimkin7 · 30/06/2024 13:22

Aggressive, dangerous menace.

Pro-cycling brigade - inc me - needs to tackle the lawless losers who ruin
it for the rest of us.

NewGreenDuck · 30/06/2024 13:23

I live on a 1 way street
But cyclists don't seem to think that applies to them. I'm waiting for the day when a delivery lorry comes in the right way and a cyclist who thinks he's on the tour de France hurtles along the wrong way. The road is only wide enough for 1 vehicle and a lorry really is taking up all the space. And most cyclists have no helmets, no lights, dark clothes even at night. It's a disaster waiting to happen.

I do find them dangerous but... Car drivers tend to respect their responsibilities more than cyclists. Cyclists think they can do what they like.

Yes because car drivers never go through a red light.
Between 2018-2022 the number of pedestrians killed on UK roads was 2018 of which 9 were involving a cyclist. Therefore 2009 involved some kind of motor vehicle, 1165 being a car. That’s 0.45% involving a cyclist and 57.73% involving one car. Aggressive dangerous menace that isn't actually responsible for most pedestrian deaths but hey who cares

UnpackingBooksFromBoxes · 30/06/2024 13:32

SoupDragon · 30/06/2024 12:34

As expected, people (presumably cyclists) have come on the thread to complain about car drivers to try and deflect the issue 😂

I don’t cycle apart from maybe for one weekend every two years at Centerparcs. The figures are there, pedestrians are at most risk from drivers of cars than cyclists.

The point being no one is up in arms about the 2000+ killed by cars, vans etc but the cyclists gets the flack when they aren’t the main problem.

ChefsKisser · 30/06/2024 13:35

I cycle every single day- commute to work, to school with the kids etc. we use cycle paths or the road, follow all road signs and give way to pedestrians. Those that don’t are a nightmare as they make everyone hate all cyclists when we should be encouraging people to cycle! It’s free, healthy and so much better for the environment and everyone’s health than driving.
I recently went to Sweden where they have so much more space for bikes and people naturally look out for them so it’s much safer. Being trapped in the UK between an aggressive driver and pissed off pedestrians when you’re cycling perfectly safely is horrible tbh.

OptimismvsRealism · 30/06/2024 13:38

Cyclists make me fearful every time I go out for a walk. Motorists don't.

Tilly73 · 30/06/2024 13:39

I've just recently started riding an electric bike and have realised how dangerous cars are. I don't go through red lights or ride on pavements but don't feel safe on the road.
All our cycle paths are taken up by cars parking so I have to ride into the road, why do you consider me more dangerous than a car 🤷‍♀️
I do drive too

OptimismvsRealism · 30/06/2024 13:38

Cyclists make me fearful every time I go out for a walk. Motorists don't.

Then your sense of fear is poorly adjusted

its2024 · 30/06/2024 13:43

Oh it's bash cyclists again thread. Drivers, cyclists, pedestrians there are good and bad ones, everyone just needs to be more considerate about other commuter's. Everyone is in such a hurry, jumping lights, overtaking when shouldn't, glued to there phones, headphones

Shared paths are a nightmare, dog walkers either dog off lead or long lead so you can't cycle past. Pedestrians taking up both sides off the shared path with either headphones on or staring into their phones.

Everyone just has to stop thinking about themselves and be more considerate.

I was cycling the other day and on a shared path, a young girl on a scooter I'm amazed she wasn't involved in an accident. No consideration for anyone else, not stop at pedestrians crossing, not even looking at the traffic. Just zooming across the road without a care.

Some people think it's just them in this world and that's all that matters.

Merrilydancing · 30/06/2024 13:45

I was recently out with my cyclist dh in the city centre. He’s not been in for a while and was shocked at the number and speed of the e-bikes. They are a huge problem.

But I am once again going to make a plea to cyclists to wear some reflective clothes/lights as I don’t think you realise how invisible you are wearing dark clothes on a grey overcast day. Yes, if I hit you, it will be my fault but you maybe dead so please please put on something reflective!

CheshireCat1 · 30/06/2024 13:47

I’m sick of cars parked on the pavement so I have to go on the road with a double buggy. I counted in one street and I had to go on the road 17 times. I remember as a teenager falling off my bike into a ditch because a car nudged my back wheel. Pedestrians are more at risk from being killing by motorists.

Treelichen · 30/06/2024 13:51

OptimismvsRealism · 30/06/2024 11:59

Just had an altercation with one who tried to cycle past me on the pavement. He insisted it isn't illegal to cycle on the pavement (it still is). Classic middle class arsehole trying to make out I was the unreasonable one for asking him not to "it's a SUNDAY morning" in that enraging patronising tone. Day. Ruined.

Cyclist was a fool but you're unreasonable for letting it ruin your day. Gain some perspective.

SalviaDivinorum · 30/06/2024 13:57

I saw one nearly wiped out by the car in front of me in Bristol the other day. Apparently the red light didn't apply to him.

Fortunately for all concerned, the driver was paying attention and stopped with inches to spare.

I now hate driving through the city centre. It's like playing a video game of dodge the cyclist, electric scooter, deliveroo motorcyclists etc. Unfortunately, unlike the games, you don't get points for which ones you hit - well I suppose you do but I would like to keep my clean licence.

OptimismvsRealism · 30/06/2024 13:38

Cyclists make me fearful every time I go out for a walk. Motorists don't.

Considering 5 people are killed every week by cars and 2 per year by cyclists your fear is misplaced.

Ocymoroniclife · 30/06/2024 14:04

TheCadoganArms · 30/06/2024 12:40

I don't think motorists, cyclists or pedestrians can hold any particular monopoly on shite behaviour in my opinion. Have commuted on bike in London for years and have been cut up by cars, had doors opened up on me and have had dopey pedestrians staring into their phones just step into the road without looking. Equally I have seen cyclists mount kerbs, jump red lights and ride the wrong way up one way streets.

This. If you are a bit of an oblivious idiot who doesn’t given much consideration to those around you, you’ll be like that whether you are walking, cycling or driving.

CaptainOliviaBenson · 30/06/2024 14:07

PauliesWalnuts · 30/06/2024 12:01

I cycle to work every day. 18 miles a round trip. I don’t ride on pavements. I always stop at red lights because I’d quite like to live. I’m sick of feeling unsafe thanks to inconsiderate drivers who feel it’s necessary to jump red lights as I am trying to turn right at a junction leaving me stranded in the road facing oncoming traffic. I’m sick of stupid inconsiderate pedestrians who walk in a world of their own wearing AirPods who are completely unaware of my existence, have music on too loud to hear my bell, don’t keep their dogs on a lead and step out in front of me because “sorry mate I didn’t see you”.

Just thought I’d even things up a bit. We’re all trying to get somewhere.

And people who are deaf? Blind? Elderly people? Disabled people? Young children? Are they also "inconsiderate pedestrians" for daring to exist in public? YOU'RE the one riding a vehicle! Just like drivers have to be extra careful of cyclists and pedestrians, cyclists SHOULD be extra careful of pedestrians!

CaptainOliviaBenson · 30/06/2024 14:09

Reugny · 30/06/2024 12:09

You must have an issue with electric cars also.

Lots move around with no noise and if you don't look carefully will run you over.

I wasn't aware electric cars are driven on the pavement?

Haveyouanyjam · 30/06/2024 14:10

OptimismvsRealism · 30/06/2024 13:38

Cyclists make me fearful every time I go out for a walk. Motorists don't.

So you don’t cross any roads/driveways during your many walks? You’ve never had a car just plough through a pedestrian crossing despite that being illegal?

There may be more cyclists on the pavements than cars and may therefore be more of an annoyance but they aren’t more dangerous.

I don’t cycle but my friend is an avid cyclist and went through a phase of every day being overtaken by the same truck who would loudly honk his horn just as he overtook her, just for fun.

Some people are selfish wankers who ignore the rules whether they are on foot/bike/car.

midgetastic · 30/06/2024 14:16

40 pedestrians are killed in the pavement or verge on average each year by car drivers - out of a total of over 7000 pedestrian deaths

In a bad year you might get 4 pedestrians killed by cyclists - this Include those on roads and official shared spaces not just pavement or verge

So you are ten times more likely to be killed by a car mounting a pavement than by a cyclists wherever they are

An average of 2 cyclists is killed each week by car drivers ( that's over 100 each year)

Remind me again - who is complaining about whom here ?
