Whatever happened to Saturday morning Tv for kids/teens?

Gooddaymatey · 29/06/2024 10:02

Just sat here and Dd watching CBeebies, looking at other channels it dawned on me-where are the kids/teens shows?
I grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons, then Going Live, Wacaday, Live & kicking (was that the name?) Gem (truly outrageous) then later on, Smtv. There was also music shows on C4 etc…looking now, it’s all cookery shows, what do the kids watch on Saturday mornings, if anything?

There's many different channels specifically for kids now, I think.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 29/06/2024 10:04

Mainly gone on to the apps now. When mine got too big for CBeebies they started watching Citv which had stuff like scooby doo etc on and it’s now online on the app only.

Notimeforaname · 29/06/2024 10:04

Phones and tablets.

Gooddaymatey · 29/06/2024 10:05

@Motnight Which ones? We have the Disney, Apple TV, Netflix ones, but it’s not the same as everyone watching the same thing at the same time

Gooddaymatey · 29/06/2024 10:06

@Notimeforaname Thats depressing, Dd doesn’t have a phone or tablet yet and trying to hold out for as long as possible. Do kids a bit older just not bother with tv now?

Coulddowithanap · 29/06/2024 10:06

There are so many children's channels these days so there is no reason for them to show their programs on the main channels.

Gooddaymatey · 29/06/2024 10:07

@Coulddowithanap On normal tv though?

OP posts:
Gelasring · 29/06/2024 10:09

It's not really needed with so many channels specifically for kids - you say yourself you're watching cbeebies. Older kids will be watching CBBC or equivalent.

Saturday morning cartoons were so exciting because we only had 4 or 5 channels and so our opportunity to watch kids stuff was naturally curtailed.

BigFatLiar · 29/06/2024 10:10

There are a couple of channels show children's shows, not new ones though. Try Talking Pictures or Rewind TV

Comedycook · 29/06/2024 10:12

My older children used to watch CBBC when they were sort of older primary age. The shoes weren't dissimilar to what we used to watch. They used to watch the dumping ground, the four o'clock club, Millie in-between etc. Not sure if blue Peter is still going but my DD was watching it and loving it about five years ago.

JurassicClark · 29/06/2024 10:12

Nobody watches “normal tv” anymore, if you mean main terrestrial channels at time of broadcast.

We all watched the same thing at the same time because we had no other option. Now there are a myriad of channels and streaming services they can access when they like.

CBeebies, CBBC, CITV plus an endless array of others.

Gooddaymatey · 29/06/2024 10:12

@Gelasring But where is Cbbc? I can’t see any kids shows/channels on normal tv, aside from
Cbeebies and Dd gets bored of that as she’s getting a little older now (almost 6)

fieldsofbutterflies · 29/06/2024 10:13

There's CBBC and CBeebies type channels?

MoonriseKingdom · 29/06/2024 10:13

Saturday mash up on CBBC is like the old school Going live type shows. But not on all year round. It usually has actors on from popular shows and musicians. They have silly gunge type games.

Gooddaymatey · 29/06/2024 10:13

@JurassicClark I can’t see Citv on either 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think it was better before

OP posts:
Gooddaymatey · 29/06/2024 10:14

Maybe it’s me, I can’t see Cbbc

Gooddaymatey · 29/06/2024 10:14

Maybe it’s me, I can’t see Cbbc

It's on Freeview, channel 201.

MoonriseKingdom · 29/06/2024 10:16

My kids aged 7 and 9 tend to watch CBBC shows on the iPlayer app through our TV. There is a continuous cartoon stream on there as well. I don’t think they really get the concept of live TV which makes me feel old

5foot5 · 29/06/2024 10:19

When my DD was small I remember there was the thing with Ant and Dec (SMTV?) but then Dick and Dom in da Bungalow took over our Saturday mornings.

I hear what people say now about there being loads of channels and streaming and so on, but I think there was something fun about a live show that all your friends will have watched at the same time.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 29/06/2024 10:23

@Gooddaymatey CITV isn’t on free view anymore they turned it off earlier in the year now on the app only

Needmorelego · 29/06/2024 10:23

@Gooddaymatey CITV as a stand alone channel has gone now (some of their children programmes are now shown on the other various ITV channels).
CBBC is still going but I believe is planning to go online only at some point.
I hope this means some of the programmes will turn up on BBC 1 or 2 (I've always said Horrible Histories should be on prime time BBC1).
Yeah ....the days of spending all Saturday morning watching Going Live style programmes followed by the Chart Show are gone 🙁

JurassicClark · 29/06/2024 10:26

I agree, @5foot5 - and @Gooddaymatey - but it’s just not how people consume media anymore. I have young adults and I don’t think any of them have chosen to listen to the radio - except maybe when in a car.

My generation lived by radio and charts shows; you aged up from Radios 1 through 4 as you grew up. My children’s listening choices are all playlists and Spotify etc

Sometimes infinite choice is not necessarily better.

MoonriseKingdom · 29/06/2024 10:26

there definitely is a live Saturday show - just not all year round!

maudelovesharold · 29/06/2024 10:27

You will hardly ever get the ‘communal’ feel of everyone viewing TV programmes at the same time that you used to have in the days of BBC1/2/ITV! Because of ‘on demand’ and a myriad of free and subscription channels, the only times you might get mass viewings will be for events which are important to most people to see ‘live’ like football matches and other sporting events, royal occasions, maybe headliners at Glastonbury, etc. Ordinary programmes not so much.

There are so many children's channels these days so there is no reason for them to show their programs on the main channels.

That's the trouble with TV now though, imho. There's such a glut of content, or such varying quality, that very few things are as exciting or hotly anticipated as they used to be.

I'm a little longer in the tooth than some MNers and Swap Shop used to rule my Saturday mornings. I genuinely used to wake up excited to watch it. Happy memories. 😃
