To ask if you eat breakfast?

Ever since I was a child I have never been one to eat breakfast. Food so early in the morning just does not appeal whatsoever and if I do try to force it in makes me feel physically sick. I don’t typically get hungry until around 11am - at which point I’ll have a small snack (eg: cereal bar, fruit, croissant etc) to tide me over until lunch.

Today a close friend (known to have disordered, heavily restricted eating) accused me of having an ED because of the lack of breakfast. Personally, I can’t see any issue here. I’m a healthy weight and this is simply the pattern in which I have always preferred to eat. Any calories that I’ve missed from not eating early in the morning are certainly made up for later in the day with lunch/dinner

Is she just being unreasonable? Is it really that odd to skip it?

I quite often don't bother with dinner as I have a large lunch. On those days I always eat breakfast the next day as I'm starving. But on the days I have dinner I don't tend to feel hungry the next morning.

I don’t bother with breakfast. Wasted calories. Always hungry again almost immediately - in fact more hungry when I eat breakfast than when I don’t. Makes me feel sluggish. I have a proper coffee with full fat milk though and that sees me through till lunch. Weirdly unlike pp I find if I have eaten before the gym it makes it harder for me. It’s probably psychological but that means I always go in the mornings.

Yep, I could have written this.
I try to fast for as long as I can.

Never. Some people call it intermittent fasting, I call it "not having breakfast". I am never hungry until about noon, so eat then. It has helped me deal with menopausal weight gain, it's a total myth that everyone needs three meals a day.

I also have come to a conclusion that for me at least I simply do not need 3 meals a day. Maybe because my lunches tend to be small but my dinners substantial and I am very sedentary.

Like some pps have said, I also find if i eat breakfast it tends to unleash hunger in me. So I can go until noon quite easily without, not even thinking about it. But if I eat breakfast- even something filled with good protein like eggs- then I am snacking all morning and feel completely unable to fill myself up.

I used to have very wonky blood sugar levels and did have to eat regularly to stablilise them. That seems to have evened out in the past 5 years- not sure why specifically. Body changing as I age perhaps.

This is exactly how I feel. On the (few) days that I do eat breakfast I notice myself getting far more hungry than I normally would + at a significantly earlier time

I’m the same as you OP, I haven’t eaten breakfast since I was at at school, i sometimes have a snack at 11 but often lunch is my first meal of the day (and my main meal)
My DH always eats breakfast, he wouldn’t dream of not doing so, as does my adult son but my daughter is like me.
We’re all different!

Bigredpants · 27/06/2024 06:43

No. And I’m overweight so not an ED!
I find it annoying to eat on other people’s schedules and it’s not great when going away.

Breakfast at 11. Afternoon snack about 2pm. Dinner at 7.
I get up at 6 so it’s quite a long fast to break.

Means I am always starving if I meet someone for lunch! Just can’t face food first thing. 🤢

Yozzer87 · 27/06/2024 06:45

I have my breakfast about 9.30 am when I get back from dropping kids at school. I will try to have something substantial and then I either won't eat lunch, or I'll have it late afternoon. If I've got to be up and out early I will just have a banana, I hate eating first thing.

Sheknowsaboutme · 27/06/2024 06:47

Always. This morning i had 3 small scotch pancakes. That will keep me going till 10, then I’ll have a banana

LifeofBrienne · 27/06/2024 07:17

It’s not weird not to have breakfast. Equally not weird to be like me and want my tea and toast first thing before I do anything else. Literally just had my breakfast and I always feel so much more human after it! A glass of water as well and I’m sorted for hydration, blood sugar and caffeine and ready to face more challenging things like having a shower...

LlynTegid · 27/06/2024 07:18

Always, cannot remember a time when I did not have a breakfast.

AstonMartha · 27/06/2024 07:21

I do but it’s not when I get up. I can only stomach water when I first get up.

I get up at 5, work out and then have breakfast around 8:30. Lunch can be anytime from 1 to 3 and then dinner is usually around 7 or 8.

I try to make sure that each meal has some kind of protein.

DiscoBeat · 27/06/2024 07:25

I don't eat between 7am and 11am. I then usually have a piece of toast with peanut butter and some blueberries, then a light lunch around 1.00. I could eat early though, I'm just losing a few lbs at the moment.

Noosnom · 27/06/2024 07:32

Always. I'd keel over without it.
Usually overnight oats, yoghurt and fruit and a mug of tea.

WiseBiscuit · 27/06/2024 07:35

I have a late breakfast, so not usually until at least 10am. I can’t eat before 9am. My ideal is breakfast at 10, lunch at 2, dinner at 7 or 8.

I do skip breakfast fairly often but then want lunch early.

that is breakfast......

ThatAgileGoldMoose · 27/06/2024 07:44

I think people should just eat as suits themselves and not worry about it.

I do (usually) eat breakfast and never have a problem with not feeling able to eat in the mornings. Cereal sends me into a blood sugar roller coaster, and I don't always have time to make eggs or something. Weirdly I've recently found that a berry smoothie with Greek yoghurt and flaxseed keeps me full onto lunch and doesn't cause the blood sugar dip/mid morning hunger that I expected a smoothie would. I do try to keep added sugar to a minimum.

Surlyburd · 27/06/2024 07:51

Im same,if i eat breakfast it just starts me continuing to eat all morning. If i dont eat i dont get hungry.
Breakfast makes me tired too so i just dont have anything. Coffee gives me enough energy.

Rositaso · 27/06/2024 07:51

No.
I intermittently fast so dont eat till midday.

jeaux90 · 27/06/2024 07:52

I don't eat until lunchtime. Haven't for years.

ScribblingPixie · 27/06/2024 08:01

If your digestion system says no, you're doing the right thing. I just had a peach and won't eat again until I'm hungry.

Fallstar · 27/06/2024 10:39

I very rarely eat breakfast. I eat twice a day, usually at around midday and 6pm but if I'm in a hotel that provides a decent breakfast with whole foods (fruit, veg, cheese, eggs) then that will be one of my meals.

I eat heartily when I do eat, though!

TheBlackCatWithTheWhiteSpot · 27/06/2024 10:50

I always eat breakfast, I never skip it, I’m always hungry when I get up. I usually eat it before 9.
But I’d still call it breakfast if I did the same as you and ate at 11, so maybe it is just a question of terminology.

But often I just have two meals a day - one more meal mid-late afternoon or early evening, and call it either lunch or dinner. If I was living alone, I’d do that most of the time, but the rest of the family prefer 3 meals a day.

NoSnowdrop · 27/06/2024 10:53

I always eat breakfast, my DH rarely does.

Whatever works for you! Don’t let your friend gaslight you.

Captainmycaptains · 27/06/2024 10:58

Sounds like their food issues are being pushed on you… you know your body and habits. I can’t eat first thing, breakfast will often be at 9am or 10am even though I get up at 6am …

Icanttakethisanymore · 27/06/2024 11:00

Of course it's fine. It's actually supposed to be good for you to have a long 'fast' overnight although I don't because I get HANGRY if I skip breakfast. Each to their own though.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 27/06/2024 13:51

Between dinner and first thing in the morning we do mostly no exercise. Those calories keep you going for ages. Probably don't even burn up until lunch. I say this as someone who walks an hour every morning and has never really felt like breakfast.

Also if I do have it I, will eat more all day. Almost like it kicks starts my appetite too soon.

Everyone's different though.
