Neighbour outside pressure washing in his back yard

At 9pm on a school night. Live in a terraced house. Kids trying to get to sleep but balmy night anyway. What do you think?

Doesn’t feel like the crime of the century to me.

SeriaMau · 27/06/2024 00:09

What a bastard. Report to police, local
FB group, and organise neighbourhood protests.

It’s fine, but I wouldn’t call it a ‘back yard’ in the UK unless you have some kind of Victorian terrace like in Corrie

Edited

She said she has a terrace so yes that’s probably what she has. like me and lots of my city As small, medium and large terraces all over and even the massive ones normally have a small back yard rather than garden.

Fraaahnces · 27/06/2024 04:54

I’d be tempted to send the kids out to play extra early tomorrow now

Fine as long as he packs it away before 10pm - he has probably been waiting weeks for the rain to stop to get it done, then been at work all day, made/eaten tea, possibly put his own kids to bed, and is only now able to get down to it.

Edit: After your update, yeah, fair, he could have started at 5pm!

Edited

Maybe not. Some jobs need to be done before pressure washing, e.g. maybe he put the garden furniture away, did some weeding, planted bulbs, or pots - all of which take effort and you would not want to do them after pressure washing the patio. Ditto hovering the house. It's 9 o'clock, not 2 a.m. Give the guy a break. Children sleep through most things, and if they don't it's not the end of the world (anyway, may not be asleep - I used to read under the bedclothes till after midnight as a child).

I wouldn’t dream of pressure washing at 9pm! It’s hard to believe someone would knowing how boiling hot it is with the windows wide open, with babies and children irritable and trying to sleep. Same with bonfires on hot evenings. But a lot of people don’t give a shit about others. Many are lurking in this thread.

We live over the road from BMW and Audi owners, I’m up at 7am each Saturday because they are out cleaning their cars with generator powered power washers. Every ruddy weekend. I don’t think I’ve ran my car through the car wash more than twice in the two years we’ve had it because it’s always raining. A young guy out the back from us has a fleet of scramble bikes and he likes to basically rev the shit out of each one starting at 8am Sundays. Some days I can’t even sit out in my garden, the noise is bloody awful. During the week I’m not overly bothered but when I want a lie in and quiet of a weekend it really pisses me off.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 27/06/2024 19:28

I feel your pain on the oressure washing. One of my neighbours is obsessed. If he’s not pressure washing his car then it’s his wife’s car, then the drive, then the garage door. Sometimes it goes on all weekend.

It’s just the arrogance of people with children

Don’t be silly. It’s rude to do something so noisy in your garden in the late evening, children or no children.

Doubledenim305 · 27/06/2024 20:49

My husband decided to power blow the garden at 8am on a Saturday morning. 😬😬. Men just are oblivious I think to these things.

I once mowed the lawn at 8pm on a summers night and a neighbour started shouting at me over the fence. She was very loud woman herself and imo rough 🤣 I stopped. But didn't think well of her afterwards and was happy to move away.

Julimia · 27/06/2024 21:39

Hes in his own space, its hardly a rock concert is it? Trying to go to sleep ??

Jeannie88 · 27/06/2024 21:43

As neighbours most of us hopefully know when young kids are in bed on a school night in hot weather with windows open and wouldn't do this. We and our neighbours all have school kids and there is a mutual respect, even ones further along. X

My nan often does loud DIY jobs . But we've never kept quiet when dcs asleep so ndn never kept them awake. 2 years ago they renewed the floor joists downstairs before installing new kitchen/ open plan the dining room.
They work m-s until around 8pm so most of that work was done after that 8.30 - 12/1am.
Out of prob 30 nights I only got a bit annoyed maybe 3 times .

I have an outdoor space that can only be cleaned properly with a pressure washer. If I did this in the evening I think my neighbours would get together and plot my demise and I wouldn't blame them, it's unbelievably loud, aircraft taking off loud. Go out at 6am and play some bagpipes.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/06/2024 22:24

Making that racket at 9pm is just plain inconsiderate.
